We're hoping to get Savannah as our next duty station. I go back and forth between wanting to live on base or off. They've updated all the housing on base and from what I see in pictures and what I hear they are beautiful homes. I keep weighing the pros and cons and can't figure out what we should do. If we live on base we don't really get an option of what we get like we would off base and we won't get the extra bah we could pocket if we found a place to live in that's under our BAH rate but all utilities would be included which would be a HUGE help for us. Also, DH will definitely be getting deployed while he's stationed there and I like the safety that living on base would provide for me since we don't have kids and it will be just me at home while he's gone. However, Savannah is only 2 hours from where I grew up so I know I'll have lots of friends and family coming to visit and I don't want it to be a hassle for them everytime they want to get on base. Especially, if we host holidays with my family like I would like to do. What do you ladies think?

I'd try to live out in town, like you said with the bah and such, you'd be able to pocket the rest. Especially if your husband is definitely deploying, and your friends are able to visit, you're going to want a place where you can host people and they can come and go, etc. Being on base will be nice for when he's gone, but having friends be able to visit will be better I think :) Good luck. I get the whole safety thing, but I'm a pretty big fan of living off base whenever possible.  What good is getting to travel all over the country/world if you always live on base?  (That's my opinion lol).  we're hoping for Germany next year sometime and even though it would mean learning the language to fit in, we REALLY want to live off base over there.  I'm all about culture absorption.  :) 

Hey! I am new to EVERYTHING military so it is all overwhelming for me...I hope my FH gets stationed in Savannah too it is beautiful there and that is where he wants to go so all fingers crossed...I think that I am a fan of living off base I know he is and he is really not negotiated on that aspect I guess he has done it many times before and it is just now what he wants to do.
