I just found out that an old friend/classmate (who is AA) getting married and her wedding will be on an old Louisiana plantation. My friend said that some people are making an issue of it b/c of the whole history of the plantations, slavery etc... Her family of are the "black and proud" variety, so I know that it isn't going over well.

Anyway, her location is lovely. Personally, I'm torn because I can understand why people feel some kind of way about it, but I guess at some point we have to be able to move past it and look how far black people have come, right?

A plantation was my back up plan if my restaurant was not available! I don't see a problem with it!

I personally didnt even look at any venues with that even in the name, in my area there were quite a few..personally,  I'm not a fan..at this point, I probably should let it go, i just haven't yet...

I would definitely have looked at it like any other venue. Our ancestors dropped blood, sweat & tears for us to get married anywhere and that includes the plantations they worked on.

I'm here in Michigan, If I was from the South ( well technically..) I would do it BECAUSE of the history and to know the ancestors are there still watching over. I would invoke a special blessing to the ancestors during the ceremony.  Now, that's how I would think.  Turn a negative into a positive.

I totally agree with Octobersky and HISRIB2010 there are so many places the our ancestors dropped blood sweat and tears that if we started not going to them then we would basically stay in our houses. I think it honors our ancestors that we are close to living the dream then they were.

Eventhough I am a city girl, I do love the look of plantations. So beautiful and historical. What can I say? I am getting married inside of a chapel at a cemetery? LOL

Historically speaking, all most all plantation owners had slaves and trafficketed in human beings as if they were animals.  In most cases blacks were regarded much, much lower than farm animals and pets.  I think land that was used to inflict harsh abuse and mistreatment of slaves would some how be cursed and I personally would not want to get married on property that I definitely knew my people suffered intense persecution. In my family we are still looking for some of our ancestors that were sold and separated from the rest of the family on the plantation.  It would bother the heck out of me to start my marriage off at that type of venue, no matter how beautiful it is. But its an individual choice if it doesn't bother someone else.
