Communication is key to any successful event and David repeatedly lacked this. Honesty was also an issue that we found out at the end.. Reviews by other people - be aware!!!! I should note that David is very pushy in asking people he thinks liked his work to write reviews everywhere for him. He will bring it up over the phone and email...an annoying number of times. If he was this eager when his clients tried to communicate with him may be there would not be an issue. This is just something to keep in mind when looking at other great reviews for David. Upon meeting David several times at the beginning, my finance and I couldn't be more thrilled. David appeared to be highly professional and very promising. As we got closer to the wedding day, we had to email/call Dave many time to get him to send us a list of songs he mentioned he would send that he thought would fit our music style. This took 4 weeks of just trying to get a response (not mentioning that when we did get this, a song list was no where to be found and the only thing David did was point to a general song list on his website; btw, he never did provide us with a customized list). Then we had to make sure David had the music for our first dance. This communication went on for over two weeks and ended one day before the wedding. Imagine the stress...enough said. David did show up at the wedding, did a good job because we gave him all songs he had to play. He completely messed up on the contests..who won what, how it was supposed to be explained and done..Naturally we went over this with him prior to the wedding and he was supposed to be the EMCC. so much for that..On top of this, our friends spend days thinking of fun questions for a shoe game where the bride/groom answer something about each other without knowing each others responses. Five of these questions were read by David, leaving the other 25 completely out!! One of the reasons we initially went with David for our DJ was that he could provide us with a song list so we could buy songs played at the wedding later. While we gave him the dance music to play, he chose most of the cocktail hour songs and now, 5 months later, over 15 emails and a dozen voice messages, we still do not have it. He lied about why he could not give us the song list, saying it was ready and in a email draft from day 1. Every email/phone call, he came up with excuses, which seemed highly unreasonable most of the time given that he had everything ready. If he said no to us at the beginning, it would have been a better way of handling the situation. Find another DJ, there are plenty of people you can give your money to who will not give you this much stress. RESPONSE TO VENDOR'S COMMENTS: David, please read the review in full - the songlist reference is NOT about native language songs (yes you played those, but keep in mind there was an English song that was on line 2 of the file we sent you read in bold letters "must play" and we had to ask you 5 minutes before the end of the day to play it at the wedding). we had zero last minute changes, lets be honest. i wish there was a way to attach email chains here. your last day follow up with the bride was the ONLY follow up within weeks, not a last minute check for changes. you might not recall the exact number of game guest ions you skipped, but i have the original list and a video for documentation.. your hospital excuse lasted 4 months. business is business after this much time.. as for reviews from other people - of course, you remind clients many times to post good reviews about you. i actually thought that because we didn't post ours the next day, you did not send us the song list. And we all know too well how surprisingly easy it is for some vendors to impact bad reviews on some websites based on their relationships with the company that owns the site... My guests danced until 11 to the music that my fiance and I hand picked with zero help from the vendor and because it was a very outgoing group. Thanking the vendor translates into thanking the bride and groom for spending days on the music selection, not the DJ by setting up the speakers. My job is to give a heads up to others so they can make an informative decision and hear both sides of the story.

Overall, great price, fabulous taste, easy to work with owner. Leave some extra time if doing pick up yourself. Our wedding cake: Chiffon cake with strawberries and cream filling (very light, overwhelmingly tasty!) Chocolate chiffon cake soaked with Grand Marnier liquor and filled with hazelnut butter cream filing Chuck, the owner, worked with my fianc and I to find the best cake for our wedding. During the tasting, he suggested that we have each of the 2 tiers with a different flavor. We picked strawberry chiffon cake right away, but liked the crme for the second flavor from one cake, the filling form another, and the biscuit from a third cake. Chuck kindly offered to bake a cake that met all three requirements and add some Grand Marnier liquor into the biscuit for us to try. We ended up loving it and greatly appreciated the customization. The owner is not pushy and will give his opinion on cake design in asked. He also does not act like a greedy business owner who tires to squeeze his clients for all they have got. His quote for our wedding cake was half of what other bakeries quoted us. Given the size of the cake and the delivery charge, Chuck suggested that we pick it up ourselves as it would be very easy to transport. It was very easy to communicate with Chuck throughout the process. On the day of the wedding, the cake was picked up by a friend and there were some surprises. Chuck assured us that all we would need is an empty trunk and a box would be provided. Turns out not really. On the day of, a store member was outraged that a cake can be put into a trunk and that we did not have a box of our own. Everything was sorted out and worked out great, but it came as a surprise for the person doing the pick up since he faced a different story than we told him based on our conversations with the owner.

Bijan Bakery

( 4.0 / 5.0 )
I love the cafe in San Jose downtown (nicer location than in Saratoga)and my fiance and I always used to go there for coffee and cakes. Naturally, we tried them out for our wedding cake. While delicious, my fiance and I were able to find a less expensive, yet, equally tasty bakery in Palo Alto (Palo Alto Baking Company), but the tasting we did at Bijan was handled ok and the staff was not at all pushy. My fiance and I felt like we had to push the staff to tell us about how things work, which might be ok, but people can't always think of all questions when it's their first large cake order, which is a downside. The client has to follow up with the bakery, which seems reasonable, but bad for business as some clients could be lost because of this. We were able to try all cakes that we wanted by pointing at their display with a finger :) You can definitely find something you like this way, but we were not offered customizations where the cream would be taken from one cake and the biscuit from another. Cost is about $400-500 for a cake that would feed 50 people. Delivery is extra. We had no further wedding cake experience with this vendor as we decided to go with someone else.

Prolific Oven

( 1.0 / 5.0 )
Very bad service during tasting (or should I say no service at all). My fiance and I had an appointment and came a few minutes early. We were asked to wait to talk to the person we were supposed to meet, which lasted for half an hour after which we were given some cake samples. We had to request these since our appointment was supposed to end soon time-wise and we had other places to be after that. We also got bored waiting without an explanation even though we asked for one. No one explained what each cake was and we had to guess what was in the cake. You are only allowed 5 cake types for a wedding cake, which are all uneatable. 55 minutes into our 1 hr appointment, someone showed up, who was not the person we were supposed to meet. We were told that we cannot have the strawberry cream cake we like at this bakery because the biscuit type must be hard for a wedding cake to hold (even a small 40-50 people one!) and that there can be no cream as it would melt even in a fridge. After this, we met with many other bakeries, spoke with actual bakers, all of which told us that the biscuit and creme requirements described to us at the Prolific Oven were fiction. We were abandoned once again and left in fury...If this place allows these incidents to happen, I can only imagine what kind of surprises they are capable of if they are selected as a vendor. Try Palo Alto Baking Company - they are a fantastic choice for wedding cakes!

Le Papillon

( 5.0 / 5.0 )
Absolutely fantastic wedding catering that will surpass all of your expectations and you will feel like royalty! Below are details about price, food, portion sizes, the process, and communication. PRICE The venue my fianc and I chose for our wedding had 5 preferred vendors for catering that we could use and we met with all of them. Not only did Le Papillon exceeded the quality, presentation, and service expectations (by far!), but they were the least expensive choice. As a restaurant, the meals are expensive but reflect what you get 5 star top quality French restaurant. Catering turns out to be less expensiveespecially when compared to other vendors (and we have looked at more than 5 since we considered other venues). During tasting, we were told to expect the same quality of food, service, and presentation during the wedding and did they deliver! We were able to opt out of having fruit punch served prior to the ceremony, as none of the guests were too fond of it based on our knowledge. We had a fruit/nut/cheese platter, which works out to be about $3.50/head, coffee/tea/soft drinks/water is combined and is about the same price. We had no desert from Le Papillon, as we ordered our cake separately. The appetizers, salad, entre worked out to be about $115 per head, which included all tax, service charges, rentals included in the price, and labor. You can rent tablecloth/napkins of any color you like, but only the standard colors are included in the price of rentals above. Le Papillon includes the rental of all silverware in their cost, although the glasses were provided by our winery. For an additional charge, we also ordered rectangular tables since only round tables were offered by the winery where we had the reception. FOOD The food looked like each plate was decorated for at least 10 minutes and all of our guests were absolutely speechless. Hours dOeuvres are indescribable and you get to try most of what is on the menu during tasting. Having such fancy food was the reason we chose to print a menu for our guestswe wanted them to know what they were eating Most appetizers are small in size, but everything is very filling. The crab souffl that we selected was actually the size of a fist. During tasting, you will try 4 entrees and while all were great, our most favorite is the grilled medallion of beef, which can be cut with a butter knife. Their soups are great as well, but we decided to go with salad, although the staff offered us a great idea of serving just an espresso-size cup of soup to everyone. PORTION SIZES My fianc and I have been to one wedding where there was not enough food, so portion size was very important to us. Portions during the tasting are the same as what you will get during catering. For entrees, each of the two meats is the size of about a female fist, which might not seem like a lot, but combined with appetizers, salad/soup, it is more than anyone could eat. I should note that most guest were Europeans and our tradition is to have a lot of food for everyone. Absolutely everyone was full and we still had cake to go. We also got a gorgeous fruit/nut/cheese platter that was set at the bar. This was barely touched as everyone was so full. Size-wise, it was a full plate of about 19x19 inches and there was a full-size bread basket. PROCESS The entry must be a combination entry of 2 meats and if a guest cannot have one type of meat, he/she can request to have only one type of meat at the event. This is a bit inconvenient, since some people might be shy and most would likely not know that this can be done. Vegetarian options are delicious and you get to try some during tasting. Again, your guest would have to be told to specifically ask for this at the event. Once it is mentioned, the catering staff will remember to bring the vegetarian option for other courses. The fruit/nut/cheese platter is not cut. You get large pieces of cheese, some hard, some soft and a basket of full-size bread. The staff was great at setting small plates and napkins next to the platter, but it still poses some inconvenience for the guests. We were allowed to bring chocolates of our own in addition to the cake. Coffee/tea is not served individually to each guest and, instead, it is served in beautiful authentic containers on one table that you can select to place anywhere in the reception room/bar. We were able to opt out of the fruit punch served before the ceremony, but it is an option. COMMUNICATION It was very easy to communicate with Jondel. We had a lot of questions and were not sure how things were typically done. Jondel handled all of our requests in a very professional and informative manner. Unfortunately, this is rare from what we have seen from other vendors that we considered for a variety of services during our wedding. Jondel will also suggest how to go about something so that both the restaurants and clients requirements are met. She is definitely a pleasure to work with!
