( 5.0 / 5.0 )
Overall, the experience was great. I wish it was a little less pricy (and I wish that we tried to negotiate a little more), but what we got was better than I could've hoped for. It's funny, because at first I was not really impressed by the pictures of the venue, but decided to look anyway. Once there, I felt like I finally found our place.

The food was FANTASTIC! Although I heard good things, I was a little nervous about it until we were at our tasting. It was so good, we wanted to lick the plates clean. We ended up getting Beef Tenderloin with mushroom sauce, Salmon with citrus sauce, vegetarian lasagna rolls, Chinese chicken salad, and a few appetizers. We got a lot of compliments over the food during and after the reception.

The venue itself is very pretty and the reception room (Starlight) worked very well with our needs. I didn't feel like I needed to dress up the ceremony site (we had the larger site) too much, which saved on costs.

Melissa was super helpful and answered all of my questions (hundreds of questions) with professionalism and promptness. I was very pleased by her helpfulness. You may be able to negotiate more with the other catering managers, but I know that Melissa was very reliable. I only wish that I could have also had her help the day of our wedding to iron out any kinks. But that's why it's necessary to have a day-of-coordinator. For example, if Melissa were available, she might have been able to direct vendors. My fiance (now husband) happened to notice a florist set up our ceremony site with another couple's flowers (Sportsmen's Lodge has two ceremony sites, same day). If Melissa or another staff member were more present, that might not have happened, but again REALLY important to have a day-of-wedding coordinator because once the problem was noticed, it was quickly resolved.

Oh, and if you book here, please ask lots of questions about the contract. It seems more strict than I found the actual practice of the venue to be. For example, the contract may say one meal choice only, but I was allowed to choose 2 plus a vegetarian option, not counting anybody with a special diet for no charge.

All in all, I am very very pleased with how things turned out. All the staff was super helpful and professional. The food was fabulous. The catering manager was a great help. My guests really enjoyed the venue and a few people told me they've never been to such an elegant wedding :) That's a great compliment to the beauty of the venue (without having extremely outrageous prices tacked on).

Steve Skaggs
( 4.8 / 5.0 )
Skiff's was great. Although our wedding was in Studio City, they still delivered the cake from Simi Valley, no problem. Cake was delicious, staff was very friendly, helpful, and VERY flexible. They gave us great advice and were really helpful in the whole process.

I loved that they had some non-traditional designs to show us (soo not a white-on-white bride, though they do have beautiful cakes for those types of brides too). We picked out one at first, then came across another picture online that they were able to mimic. They even let us choose colors from one of those pantone color guides, to try to get the colors as close as possible to what we wanted on the cake. We took a risk with the colors and while were 97% happy with the way the colors came out (which I am sure is our fault and not theirs). The only thing I was a little unhappy with was where the flowers were placed on the cake. I had asked that one dahlia (from the florist) be placed on the side of one of the tiers, but when I looked at the cake all of them were on top. No big deal, though, my day-of-coordinator was able to fix it.

Cake was good, but unfortunately we didn't get a slice of the flavors we wanted (they were all passed out to the guests prior to ours), so I am planning on going back to make sure I get some yummy spice cake and that my husband can get his chocolate with raspberries!

Yamaguchi's Flowers
( 4.8 / 5.0 )
Do not look any further than Yamaguchi's. I ALMOST went with somebody who would have been $500 or more and would have gotten WAY less flowers. I was referred to Yamaguchi's by two separate people... my parent's friends (both of their daughters used Yamaguchi's) and our friend's sister who recently got married. Our friends and I both used Yamaguchi's and we were stunned.

There are SOOOO many benefits to going with them, especially because they grow their own flowers. During our consultation, they mocked up everything: my bouquet, bridesmaids bouquets, flower girl bouquets, corsages, boutonnieres, centerpieces, the ribbons that would be used, etc. It's really hard for me to visualize how things would have looked with other florists, but they literally piece it together with you during the INITIAL consultation, and again during the final consultations. My fiance (now husband) even got REALLY REALLY into it because he was able to see everything right away. It was a great experience.

The price was AMAZING for the amount of flowers we got. We got all the flowers we needed for our 17 tables, reception, 9 bridal party members, 2 moms, 3 ringbearers, 2 dads, 2 flower girls for only $1800 (which TRUST me is WAY cheaper than what most florists are going to quote). We had gotten quotes for 2500 and higher for WAY fewer flowers and extremely limited choices so I was very relieved to finally go to Yamaguchi's.

This seems to be a small business, possibly family run, so responsiveness I made 4 out of 5 stars because it took a while to get our contract in the mail. But, in terms of seeing the flowers right away and getting flowers delivered on-time/early, they were fantastic! They even did two separate deliveries for us... from Santa Paula to Studio City!

Ron was awesome and we loved our experience so much, we'll probably go there every once in a while (although way out of our way), to get more of the beautiful flowers they used for our wedding.

Go for a consultation... you won't be disappointed.
