Melissa and I met July 1, 2008.  I had just graduated from the Judge Advocate Officer Basic Course and osme follow-on training, and had just arrived back in the Texas area earlier that week.   It wasn't until later that our meeting was not by chance but rather a set-up by one of our mutual friends.  She had the benefit of seeing a picture of me before our dinner at the Barton Creek Chuy's and was told that she might go for me because she didn't have anything against "red heads" (a description I still totally refute by the way, Trina!!)

There were four of us at dinner and Melissa was pretty quiet for the most part during dinner.  So I had absolutely no idea it was a set-up until I got a text before I even got to my car asking what I thought of her.  We ended up spending several of the next few days together and I think she won me over when she cooked her mom's fan-tabulous pork roast (my mouth is watering just thinking about it).  We had some great times together, but it just wasn't the right time for us.

We never stopped caring for each other and basically hung out most weekends.  Yeah, we tried the "dating other people" thing, but never really found anyone that we saw spending the rest of our lives with.  I think we always had the other in the back of our mind.  I think my deployment to Iraq was when we really grew close -- sounds strange I know to say that two people grew closer when they're half a world away from each other, but she was my rock then ... and now.  And when we adopted little Xander together (well, he's not so "little" anymore), it was all over for me.  Our little furry family had begun.
