planning bio

photography:

reba saldanha is a professional photojournalist based in boston. i love this close-up shot and splash of color. she'll do an awesome job!

DIY invitation:

i designed these to reflect the marriage of two cultures, indian & chinese. the top is an indian groom procession, and the bottom is a chinese bride procession. double happiness symbol for chinese marriage, goan star for goa. lotus blossoms, symbolizing purity, creation, and rebirth... finally red is the color for marriage.
my DIY invitation assembly:
  • 5X7 invitation card
  • 10.25x7 pretty red paper, 3 sorts
  • 5.5x4 RSVP postcard
  • 5x7 map/OOT info, double sided
  • envelopes that i addressed

i used a speedball pen w/ C5 tip, and acrylic inks. i mixed the gold ink with a bit of the black ink for a glossy dark gray ink that was dark & sparkly in the light. envelopes had 30% post-consumer content.

8.1.06: letterpressed thank you cards from invitesite.com

100% post-consumer waste, tree-free, chlorine free... and i didn't have to pay for shipping since they're located in Pasadena.

ceremony:

St. Philip the Apostle Church, Pasadena, CA

we had a hard time finding a church that would allow us to get married. most required that we be registered parishioners for over a year. we finally narrowed it down to St. Philip the Apostle and St. Elizabeth's. alok liked the lively vibe at St. Philip. it's also large and gorgeous inside.

reception:

The Athenaeum, Pasadena, CA

i became a member just to have our reception here!

menu: citrus avocado salad (we asked for a wedge of tomato to be added) and the hale buffet with sirloin, chicken, salmon, butternut risotto, and white/green asparagus.

our wedding cake from deCroupet will be three tiers of marble cake layered with strawberry mousse with fresh strawberries. whipped cream icing. this is the cute mini heart-shaped cake that they made for our tasting. good things about deCroupet: 1. taste ;) 2. free mini-anniversary cake 3. will do flowers w/o extra charge 4. delivery to pasadena w/o extra charge 5. they LOVE what they do, and you can tell right off.

decor:

our reception will be in the main dining room. we're using chivari chairs and fleur de lis number holders complimentary of the ath.
we bought six small and two medium sized blue french flower buckets from smith and hawken at 75% off.

personalized toasting glasses from weddingchannel.com.

guests:

bathroom baskets at the reception: aleve, tylenol, lotion, floss, shout wipes, mini emery boards, mints, baby powder, rolaids, claritin, cough drops, safety pins, cough drops

gals: pads, makeup remover, blotting paper, hairspray, bobby pins
guys: axe deodorant spray (hot commercials!)

floral display tea from adagio.com and small ghirardelli or lindt chocolates.

red velvet favor bags from efavormart.com. 100 for $24, including S&H.

attendants:

netbride.com: Eden Bridals #7054, $92

wildties.com: $11 for red, $28 for white tie + pocket square.

dressing the part:

jewelry

his wedding bands from icing on the ring, downtown LA
engagement ring from 66 e colorado in pasadena

wedding ring "kindred souls"

this beautiful ring is from green karat, a store that specializes in earth friendly jewelry.

makeup & hair: jenna tibbets

consultation with jenna tibbets.

wedding dress

watters & watters #6043B: sweetheart neckline, strapless, modified a-line, re-embroidered lace.

my brand new dress arrived from ebay and i just had to try it on even though i was at work.
first dress fitting with susana. i'm 5'0" but i didn't want to cut the gorgeous lace. susana suggested doing front pickups to shorten the dress. the bustle will have one english in between two french bustles.
second dress fitting with susana. there's still 3+ months to go to the wedding and the dress is done!

The Athenaeum
http://athenaeum.caltech.edu/

551 S. Hill Avenue
Pasadena, CA 91106
(626)395-8200

The Ath is open for private events, but you have to be a member or have a member sponsor you. Membership is open to Caltech faculty, staff, graduate students, employees, alumni, trustees and associates. JPL employees are also eligible. recommended!

when: due to our daytime wedding, we held lunch+cocktails indoors. we didn't want our guests to bake in the sun. our buffet was setup on the east patio.
why: available, close by (on campus), and pretty, in a quintessential 30's sort of academic way
food: for cocktail hour (12-1pm) we passed mini-muffins, sangria, and fizzy strawberry lemonades, and did three stations: brie normandy, fruit, and coffee (we knew we'd want coffee!!). guests esp. liked the brie. for lunch, we served the hale buffet. excellent quality food and plenty of it.
setup: nellie + staff helped setup the place cards, favors, bathroom baskets, guestbook, cake cutting set, and table numbers. we used their little fleur de lis holders for the menus and table numbers. i dropped everything off the thurs before, and nellie took care of everything. such a relief! nellie rocks!
awesome service: nellie is very responsive to emails/phone calls, and friendly in person. the staff at the ath are good. it's a faculty club, after all!
price: for 76 guests (including three 7 yr olds), open bar w/ call brands, it came out to $122 per person, including tax + house charge.

minor complaints:

  • when we first booked the ath, allison said that we would have the run of the place till 4 pm. then it turned out that they needed to begin setup of the west patio for a night event. we didn't need the space but the inner bridezilla would have liked the view...
  • my groom forgot to tell anyone about the cake stand or cake pillars that needed to go back to the bakery. i actually chatted with nellie a bit while the cake was being dismantled, but, somehow neither of us thought about the cake stand & etc. we got the stand back, but the pillars had been thrown out.
  • we were constrained by our church availability and enjoyed our daytime reception, but the west patio at night is where the ath really shines.
side note: my in-laws all stayed at the ath and everyone loved it. the rooms are cozy, and has a very polished feel to it. the dining room serves a tasty breakfast.

De Croupet aka "The Cake Sisters"

23 E. Huntington Dr. Arcadia, CA

highly recommended!! pretty & tasty cakes. skilled, friendly & reassuringly competent!

deCroupet was recommended to me by another Athenaeum bride. we ended up getting a marble, three tier cake w/ strawberry mousse+fresh strawberry filling, whip cream icing, and floral lacy decoration in ivory buttercream. it was beautiful, tasty, and just happened to match my wedding dress ;) my husband's grandmother's birthday was on our wedding date, so we also got their chocolate cake + espresso mousse + chocolate ganache icing.

service: janine and cheryl make a great team and they're very competent. i changed our cake from yellow to marble, and it was easy. i added the chocolate cake the week before the wedding and they made it very easy to add. both cakes were delivered on time, and they did the decor for the cake table. awesome. the cake was even prettier and tastier than i expected!

price: $260 for 6", 9", 12" wedding cake. plus, they did the flowers in between the layers for free. all we had to do was drop off the roses on fri, the day before. didn't need to worry about buckets or anything. so cool. also, no delivery fee to pasadena! for ref, we also tasted at cakery bakery (a very close 2nd), susina, jakqui's, porto's, and bee's knees.

St Philip The Apostle (Pasadena)
151 S Hill Ave
Pasadena, CA 91106
(626) 793-0693

We decided on St Philip the Apostle Church because they were very open to us as a mixed religious couple and had a very lively parish. Father Joe was awesome and made our ceremony very special. Alok's family loved him immediately. He was very accommodating and made us feel very comfortable. He came to the reception afterwards, and kindly said grace, too ;)
During the planning process, we worked with Cathy Pupo. She was a bit difficult to get a hold of, but responded to letters or notes that we left at the church office. On the day of, and at the rehearsal, she was very patient and reassuring. St Philip requires that you use their musicians, which worked out for us. David played the organ and Pazzi was our cantor. Both were fabulous and made the day special!
Sometimes it is difficult to get in touch, but be persistent. If you have time, letters or notes work really well! Be patient, it will work out ;)

This company sells organic flower arrangements for special occasions as well as wholesale orders (perfectly sized for weddings!). Flowers arrive at your doorstep via overnight Fedex.
i ordered their assorted red roses, about 200 for $200 (includes o/n delivery). they got delivered friday morning and were gorgeous! we're talking loooong stemmed roses with very full heads (3" or more at half opened!). i've never seen roses that are more beautiful.

good things:
-upon purchase, organic bouquet donated to the red cross
-i worked with melissa, who helped me out with their pricing and ordering. she even offered to help put a box together if i wanted to mix it up since it was for my wedding. how nice is that??!!
-the roses arrived carefully packed in a large cardboard box and wrapped in soft paperboard type thing. no plastic or styro. so cool!
-i was worried about getting roses allll the way from ecuador... but apparently organic bouquet has a zero carbon program in place to offset the carbon cost.

Order flowers grown in Northern CA by the bunch and have it delivered to your door. Company advocates mindful pesticide usage, and good treatment of employees. i recommend freshroses if you want believe in their business practice and want a variety of flowers for your wedding. if you want primarily roses, check out organicbouquet.com.

i ordered about 350 stems for $466, so it's not exactly budget flowers. my flowers arrived after o/n fedex delivery and was packaged in a large styrofoam [bleh] lined box. i love their variety and ordered irises, freesia, gladiolas, ireland bells, roses, spray roses... great variety! the quality varied a bit. the red gladiolas were fantastic, but the orange ones were smaller and "okay". same thing for the snapdragons-- orange ones were awesome, the yellow ones were "okay". a few (~12/350) flowers were crushed, so order a few more. the quality of roses not as good as organicbouquet.com.

Susana (Duarte)

also works at paulette's ambiance, pasadena: (626)683-7575
overall, susana does a good job, but is quite busy.

my wedding dress was a watters 6043B, a strapless sweetheart lace dress that is fitted but then flares out. for $250, susana put in front pickups, 2 french bustles, 1 large english bustle, and took it in along the side. i paid $100 up front, and $150 at the end. make sure that she writes down everything that you discuss. she alters ALOT of wedding dresses.

i got my dress in april, and had it altered in may for my september wedding. after i tried it on a few more times at home, i realized it was difficult to walk in because the inner layer of the dress was too long. i ended up hemming it myself (took 5-10 mins on my sewing machine) because nobody would ever see it.

at the wedding, i was really comfortable. the dress stayed up with no problems and looked great on me. :)

we stayed here for our "wedding night". we booked their expressionist suite because it has a red, double jacuzzi!! since we didn't go on a honeymoon right away, it was a great way to unwind after the wedding.

we got there really late, but it was not a big deal since the innkeeper left us our key in their mailbox. the expressionist suite is in a cottage at the back. the breakfast the next morning was awesome, and we were sad we didn't have time to hang out and stay for the afternoon tea. very friendly.

(firefliez also stayed here pre wedding if you want to check out her knot bio for her review.)

Jenna Tibbets
jenna5792001@yahoo.com

i booked jenna 2 months prior to my wedding. she works out of a salon in glendale, and was listed as a backup for another artist. she's fast via email.

i think jenna is awesome for updos. for makeup, she's really good, too. my mascara didn't run at all and i loved the extra lashes ;) jenna is also pretty good at styling short hair, but i think she's better with updos. jenna is skilled, fast, and calm-- great for wedding day.

i bought a pearl/crystal comb ($15), a silver headband with silver leaves, pearls & AB crystals ($25), and a gorgeous fingertip veil w/ blusher ($50). Nora helped me out and let me try lots of things on with no pressure. i had a veil already, but this one was so pretty that i got it anyway.

i ordered 100 red velvet 4"x6" bags for $24, including shipping & handling. not too shabby! the bags are of the right color, but the velvet is not the nice stuff-- it's more like velvet backed plastic-- but what can you really expect at $0.24 per bag? they also offer personalization but i didn't have enough time for that. you can order through their website or through their ebay store.

Provider of DIY kits for beautiful invitations, thank you cards, programs, and etc. Most orders are shipped, but if you are local, you can pick it up. I ordered our letterpressed thank you cards for less than $1 a piece. Even better, the cards are from 100% post-consumer waste (no trees!) & chlorine free. I love the red lokta lining. They are beautiful to touch! I went back and ordered 50 sheets of their 100% post-consumer waste paper for our wedding programs & menu cards. even though it's not a product they usually sell, they were very accommodating. The price was not bad, either & since i picked up my order, there was no shipping or handling! i love how they give you 10% extra, so i got 55 sheets

netbride is awesome. i asked them for a number of quotes and they always got back to me within a day. we ended up getting our bridesmaid dresses from them, and it was a very easy & straightforward process. the size charts for eden had changed, and they verified that i had ordered the correct sizes. the dresses came months in advance.

Registries

we picked our registries according to what we wanted and buyblue.org.

Crate and Barrel: nice selection of some cute seasonal and bar stuff. we put our registry together about 1 month prior to the wedding, so we did not run into problems with things becoming unavailable. we got our 10% off coupon about 2 weeks after the wedding, and finished it off. very organized. overall, great experience and highly recommended.

.............................................

Bed, Bath and Beyond: large selection of kitchenware. we registered for knives (even though it's bad luck in chinese culture) and then traded them back in to get the full set. totally. awesome. this allowed us to get a couple of extras that were in the set, plus some extra $$! very good customer service. everything arrived with the proper forms and gift cards so it was easy to keep track of everything. also highly recommended.

.............................................

Williams-Sonoma: we started out with W-S but they mixed up our order (sent us 3 instead of 1 dish rack, plus we got someone else's card!). while they were nice about the return, we cancelled our registry there.
