Aneita's Alterations & Sew Forth

( 5.0 / 5.0 )
We used Aneita's to rent the tuxes for our wedding--the Chocolate Parisian tux from Jim's Formalwear. They were very helpful every time we dealt with them. They took the time to order in a sample jacket so that my husband could try it on and decide whether he wanted that tux or not. We got the deal where you rent 5 tuxes and get the groom's tux free, which was great. They try to get the tuxes in early enough that they could overnight a replacement if something is totally wrong. Unfortunately the groom and groomsmen in our wedding all lived outside of Lawrence so they weren't able to try the tuxes on ahead of time--but we appreciated that they were willing to do what they could to fix errors! Thankfully, there were no serious size issues and all the guys looked great. I really felt that Aneita's was very professional and pleasant to work with, and would gladly recommend their tux rentals to anyone else looking for somewhere local to rent their menswear!

Camelot Ballroom

( 5.0 / 5.0 )
We used the Camelot II Ballroom in Lawrence as our reception venue and were extremely happy with it. The venue itself is beautiful--hardwood floors, chandeliers, adjustable lighting (to "set the mood"). Camelot was able to provide tables and chairs so we didn't have to worry about renting them. They were good about communicating via email and we were able to meet at the ballroom a few times and they were very good about explaining everything to me prior to our rental. Bridget was very helpful in all of our dealings.

Since Camelot's main studio is in Overland Park, it takes a little coordinating to meet and get into the Lawrence ballroom, but we were able to work it out and had a good feel for the space prior to our wedding. Just know that you probably couldn't drop by at the last minute and get in (though you can always look in the windows!) Camelot was very affordable, especially for a venue on Mass St. They seem to be working to improve the facility--they are adding kitchen space, for example--so I'm sure it will be an even better venue in the future. It may not be widely known as a rental space now, but I can't imagine it will remain a "hidden gem" forever!

Camille Nolan Photography

( 4.8 / 5.0 )
Camille Nolan was the photographer for our 1/1/11 wedding. Her prices are fantastic and she's a wonderful photographer. She was professional and fun during our engagement photos as well as our wedding. We felt totally comfortable with her and she did a beautiful job of capturing our day on camera. We had an engagement session and 8 hours of wedding photography, plus discs with our photos and rights to all our photos for under $1000, which is practically unheard of.

Camille does not do photography full time and travels with her husband who is a musician frequently, so she doesn't always respond to emails immediately. However, she always did respond within a few days or so. It took about 8 weeks to get our photos after the wedding, which might seem like forever to some people but was reasonable to me. They were definitely worth waiting for!

If you are looking for an affordable, fun photographer in the NE Kansas area, definitely check out Camille Nolan. We were very happy with our experience with her.

CaraSue Hall, Professional Freelance Makeup and Hair Artist

( 5.0 / 5.0 )
Cara Sue did hair and makeup for my 1/1/11 wedding and was fabulous! She came to our hotel room in Lawrence and brought all her equipment, set up fast, and was ready to go. Her pricing is EXTREMELY reasonable, especially since she will come to you. We all looked elegant and gorgeous without seeming overly made-up.

She did hairstyles on 3 girls (with long hair!) and 4 sets of makeup all in 2.5 hours. She doesn't need 90 minutes per person to make you look beautiful, and she knows that there are many other things a bride and her attendants need to be doing on the wedding day other than sitting in the makeup chair!

I felt completely glamorous and the hair and makeup lasted all day. She gave us all extra lip color for touch-ups throughout the day, but other than that I didn't even have to think about how my hair and makeup looked--they stayed in place and looked fabulous!

Cara Sue made me feel totally at ease and I felt very mellow the entire morning as we were getting ready. She responded quickly to all of of my emails and was incredibly friendly, cheerful, and professional to deal with throughout the entire planning process. She is one of the first vendors I booked and is definitely someone I would recommend to any other KC area bride looking for a hair and makeup artist.

Davie & Chiyo Clutches

( 5.0 / 5.0 )
I ordered a custom Rosa Iceberg clutch to give to my mom for the wedding. I picked a dark grey clutch with a red flower. It arrived quickly and was absolutely stunning! The flower is a detachable pin-back, so my mom could take it off the clutch and wear it to accessorize another outfit. The clutch worked so well with her Mother of the Bride outfit and she was really surprised by the gift! I've seen several other gorgeous bags from Davie and Chiyo and have to say that I'd recommend them to anyone willing to invest in a high quality clutch.

EmilyHart Bridal

( 5.0 / 5.0 )
I first went to Emily Hart in November of 2009, while they were still located in Paola. I was the only bride in the store and had a wonderful experience. Every dress I tried on got closer and closer to perfection, and then I found the one! They were also having a Christmas special for brides who purchased their dress, and I won a free custom veil. My dress was the store sample, because the style had been discontinued, and it was discounted over $300.

The second time I went to Emily Hart was actually the day of the grand opening of their new location in Leawood. Even though there were tons of people there, I was able to meet with Val, who did the alterations on my dress. Their new location is beautiful. You can still look through all their dresses, they have beautiful lighting and lots of mirrors... it's a lovely store.

I did have to ask a couple of times to get them moving on the custom veil--they don't do them in the order that they receive the specifications, but according to your wedding date. I was surprised to find out that it had been nearly a year since I ordered the veil and it hadn't been started, but they did complete it with plenty of time to spare before the wedding and it was beautiful. I just want to make sure other brides are aware--if you're wanting a custom veil far in advance of your wedding date, you might need to specify that when you order.

I think Emily Hart is a beautiful store with great customer service. I have no complaints whatsoever about the dress. The alterations were reasonable (I didn't need much--mostly just a bustle) and everyone complimented me on the dress on my wedding day. It's definitely worth checking out, even if you don't wind up buying there--they do allow you to take as many photos as you want, which is a huge selling point to me!

Helens Cakes & Cookies

( 5.0 / 5.0 )
Helen made the cake for my 1/1/11 wedding and it was to-die-for fabulous! When we met for a consultation she had many examples of her work--both fake cakes to showcase her decorating skills, and many albums of past cakes. She was able to find pictures of previous cakes she had made to show that she could give us exactly what we wanted. We got a 4 tier cake with buttercream frosting. The piping work was incredible, and the cake... oh, the cake! My husband and I did the traditional cake cutting and feeding, but we could not let it go at a single bite! We had to finish the entire slice of cake then and there--it was too incredible to put down.

Helen delivered the cake to our reception hall with no problems. She explained to our reception coordinator in detail exactly how to separate the layers of cake for serving, so that when it came time to serve the cake it went without a hitch. We had a lot of cake left over, and even frozen and thawed a week later it is still incredibly moist and delicious. I can't recommend her spice cake (with cream cheese filling!) enough--it's the best I've ever had, hands down. Helen is friendly to work with, her pricing (I think) is very reasonable, especially for the quality of product you receive. I highly recommend her work to anyone looking for a cake that is not only beautiful, but delicious as well.

Netbride.com

( 5.0 / 5.0 )
I used NetBride to order a dress for my husband's groomswoman. We don't live close to any stores that offered the dress we wanted, so it seemed easier to order somewhere that would deliver directly to us. I ordered a Bill Levkoff dress. The pricing was very reasonable and they got back to me with a price quote very quickly (within 24 hours.) All email communication was clear and fast.

I ordered the dress at the end of September for my January 1 wedding, and was told that they could only guarantee delivery by December 29. They encouraged me to spend an extra $50 for "rush shipping" so they could guarantee it by November 29. However, I didn't think that one dress (in the same color they make all sample dresses of that style!) would take 3 months. All I had to do was clearly state that I understood that the dress might not arrive until December 29 and that I accepted all responsibility if that were to happen. I'm glad I saved the $50 because the dress arrived before OCTOBER 29--that's right, a month after ordering! If I had been ordering a lot of dresses I might have considered the rush fee worth the peace of mind, but it was a gamble that paid off for me. I'm sure delivery times can vary depending on the designer.

Overall I was very happy with my Netbride experience. They got us what we needed quickly, and the dress looked great! I would recommend them to anyone who asked about reputable online sources for brand-name dresses.

Owens Flower Shop

( 5.0 / 5.0 )
Owens Flower Shop did the flowers for my 1/1/11 wedding and I was very pleased. I was pretty general about what I wanted but they were able to take my vague suggestions and turn out some beautiful results. They were open to special ordering something for the boutonnieres when we suggested it a few weeks before the wedding. They delivered to the church and everything was fabulous. A week later, the large flower arrangement for the altar still looked gorgeous.
My bouquet was very lightweight and beautiful (a relief, since at my sister's wedding with a different florist, the bride's bouquet weighed at least 20 pounds!)All the boutonnieres were clearly labeled and easy to hand out. The hydrangeas in the flower girl's pomander ball kept falling out, but I think a lot of that was due to being in the hands of a 4 year old--it still looked great in pictures and didn't totally collapse until later in the evening.
I'd recommend Owens to anyone wanting a local florist who adds unique touches to their arrangements. I was very satisfied with their work.

Sunflower rentals

( 5.0 / 5.0 )
We used Sunflower Rentals as a source for coffee urns for the coffee bar at our reception. Their prices were really reasonable (a 100 cup urn was $15 and we got to keep it for a few days) and they were sure to include instructions on how to use it. They also had a handy info sheet they gave us when we stopped by to see what they had. I was pleased that they were so flexible and affordable. Their showroom is nice for getting a feel for what they have to offer.
