Universal Hilton (contacts: Yi Tan and Carol Wang): B- during wedding planning process, A on day of wedding We had both our ceremony and reception at Universal Hilton, which turned out to both be a headache and a relief. We rented the outdoor Sierra Courtyard for the ceremony and got the package for cocktails and banquet. Yi and the Hilton staff gave us full attention on our wedding day and service was fantastic (well, you are paying a premium for the service). The food (we didnt get to eat much of it) was yummy according to our guests. BUT I had some trouble dealing with Yi during the wedding planning process. I had signed the contract with Yis predecessor that included a guaranteed number of appetizers per person, but Yi reneged on that and said the contract didnt specifically state that on her end (we had the paperwork on our side, thank goodness girls, keep EVERYTHING you get from vendors). There were also schedule conflicts that I was told last-minute about the reception and cocktail room usage that prevented us from setting up on time. Both of these were solved eventually, but it took more energy than necessary. Yi was also very, very hard to get a hold of. I would call her and not hear from her for 2 weeks (and our wedding was only weeks away). When she called me back, she would leave a message and say something to the effect of well, I called you and youre not there. That was very frustrating to deal with, especially since her job is not to make your planning process harder than it needs to be. We had a sweetheart table and we were charged for our food even though we had tables that had empty space. If you are thinking about having your ceremony/reception at Hilton, be sure to think ahead of what you need and get everything in writing (exact menu items and price, exactly spell out what your package includes, guaranteed time to set up, consecutive or disjointed open bar hours, etc.). That said, on your wedding day, you will receive excellent service and the dcor is pretty darn nice for picture-taking.

Our cake from Vans was both beautiful and super delectable. We gave Vans a picture of what we are looking for, and they far exceeded our expectation. The cake was absolutely gorgeous! We got taro and mango flavors, but we ended up with taro and mocha flavors instead. But the mocha tasted just fine (but the taro was divine). I enjoyed the cake so much that I kept taking bites during the cake cutting. Our cake was a 3-tier cake for $240. Divine. Email me for pics they did a wonderful job on the cake!

Jack exceeded our expectations in a positive way. He can be a bit snippy, even with the wedding party, but we preferred an outspoken DJ rather than a meek one. We gave him a list of songs to play for the ceremony, post-reception and reception entrance. Everything else was up to him. We had our own part-time MC, but Jack stepped up and did many of the MC duties quite well. He did play a couple of cheesy old Chinese songs when we changed into the qwa, but our older family members liked that. Jack is dedicated to his work - he came to our rehearsal and played after the reception until everyone left the dance floor. The music was really loud for the dancing part and I told him to turn it down twice, but the volume was still too loud. Needless to say, all of the older family members vacated as soon as the dance music came on. Overall, Jack is a great, hardworking vendor who will do the job. If you want an MC as well as a DJ, hes the man.

highly disappointing Both my Mom and I were initially very excited to hire Henry after seeing his work. Henry is not cheap, but I decided to splurge on a photographer who seemed like he could do photojournalistic style. Hiring Henry is the worst vendor decision I made. After seeing the pictures from our wedding, I am very disappointed in his work. His photojournalistic style pictures equate to those that just about anyone can take with a professional camera. He took over 900 pictures, but I can count on one hand the number of pictures that arent posed that had my face from front view! Almost every picture that was photojournalistic had my profile, my back or about 20% of my face! There were only 2 close-ups of me during the entire ceremony and reception! He did take many pictures of me getting my makeup done, but which brides want pictures BEFORE their makeup is put on? During the cocktail hour, he seemed so bored and focused on eating appetizers that I had to ask him repeatedly to take pictures with guests before he would raise his arms to work the camera. He also failed to take important pictures like my feeding my husband cake, the ballroom setup and the ceremony setup. When I told him he didnt take these must-have pictures, he said, Oh really? I can give you pictures from another wedding. I had a couple friends with professional cameras take pictures for us, and their pictures were far, far superior to those that Henry took. There are a few positives: Henry is friendly, he took some artistic posed pictures and he speaks Mandarin and little bit of Cantonese. However, for me that doesnt make up for the fact that he is not a talented enough photographer for the price that he charges, is too laid back, does not do photojournalistic style well, and doesnt seem to care much.

Karen Kim and Annaha Song
We made a last-minute decision to hire day-of wedding coordinator and that was one of the BEST decisions we made. Ladies, I thought I could do multi-task and have my friends and family do everything on the wedding day, but I now know that hiring Karen and Annaha enabled me to truly enjoy my wedding without worrying about anything. Trust me, there were tons to worry about, but Karen and Annaha took care of EVERYTHING down to the T. I owe it to them for having a fun and successful wedding. These girls are so on top of things, they look ahead, troubleshoot, look for red flags and still look poised and effortless doing it. Karen and Annaha are the perfect working partner Annaha is not afraid to get your wedding party in line and Karen is so detailed-oriented. These girls are not afraid to get down and dirty either. Our wedding day was almost 100 degrees, and Annaha was outside helping our florist tape down the aisle runner in the afternoon heat. So many things could have gone wrong, but Karen and Annaha were there to manage and made our wedding the success it was. They are smart, willing to do things without asking, plan ahead, detailed-oriented, and are affordable too! They are hands-down the BEST vendor we hired!

Heidi will give you beautiful floral arrangements and centerpieces for an affordable price. Her work is not of the highest quality, but you will save money. She did a gorgeous piece for us for our gazebo and made beautiful centerpieces and bridesmaid bouquets that looked more expensive than they were. But my wedding bouquet was less than stellar. I asked for white calla lilies, which she delivered, but the quality was sub-par. For me, flowers were not that important, so I opted to spend a medium amount (still a sizable chunk of change) and splurge more on other stuff like videographer and photographer.
