The Spanish Monastery was the best choice for our wedding. We had both our ceremony and reception there and it was unbelievably beautiful. We barely had to decorate, the venue is amazing all by itself. Since the wedding, we have heard nothing but rave reviews from our guests... everyone was completely blown away! The staff (Carolina and Tonya) were fantastic, helpful and totally reliable. I would definitely recommend the Monastery to anyone.

This is by far what made my wedding a dream come true. The venue is perfect for a beautiful outdoor fairytale. Everyone was comfortable, the pictures are amazing, and the weather was perfect (Dec 10th)....Thank you so much to everyone that works at the monastery. I am so happy that I had my wedding there. It felt like we were getting married in Europe!

The Spanish Monastery is like a fairytale come true. it is hard to imagine this place existing in South Florida and the enormity of its presence hits you like a ton of bricks from the moment that you step on the property. Being so beautiful, the wait is extensive, but well worth it. The staff at the monastery is superb and accommodating. I would recommend that you contract the on site coordinators (Tania and Carolina) who help everything to run smoothly. I never had to worry about anything for the reception even though I dropped off about a U-Haul sized cargo load earlier that week to be set up. Upon arriving after the ceremony, the Monastery took everyone's breath away. It was even more beautiful with the candles lighting the way, the crystals and candles sparkling in the trees and archways.Even my caterer told me that in all the years he has been doing events there, he has rarely seen the monastery look the way that it did that magical night. You felt like you were in a tropical forest from the garden and in an ancient European historic landmark (which it truly is) from inside.Believe me, there is nothing more gratifying than hearing from all of your guests (US, Latin America and European based) say "WOOOOOOWWWWWWW" when they arrive as they take it all in and dance under the stars. But you need to hire Tania and Carolina to help make it come true!!!

My husband and I just had our wedding there a few days ago but we have been dealing with the staff at the Monastery for about 10 months prior to our wedding. They were all amazing people. Super kind and generous and always eager to help us in anyway they could. Father Gregory is an outstanding guy and we felt like we had known him our entire lives. He truly is an amazing person and got to know us in such a short amount of time so that he could personalize our wedding ceremony to match us. We loved that he wanted to make it different and unique to complement our personalities and things that are important in our lives. We are blessed to have had him preform our marriage ceremony. Even with something that did go wrong when the organist did not show up for our wedding ceremony without a phone call or a notice the staff and Father Gregory handle it like professionals. They ended up having our Spanish guitar player that we hired for cocktail hour to play during our ceremony. It turned out to be absolutely prefect, like it should have been that way the whole time. The whole staff took care of us like we were family. Some of the best people I have even know work here and we are so lucky that we were able to have our wedding at the Monastery and remember how wonderful it was for the rest of our lives!Thank you to Father Gregory & StaffLove always,Jenna & Dennis Nash

The Monestary is a magical place at night. The cloister area for reseptions is beautiful they will place lanterns on the large tree for a small fee, it really makes a difference. My tip is have a plan B incase it rains (it rained on my wedding a storm in fact) plan a plan B for every detail of your layout.

I highly recommend The Spanish monastery for that special day.Since the first moment We walked in we knew we wanned to get married is such a magical place. The cost was just right! The day of the wedding they made sure everything came out great. We still can't believe the day already passed. If we had to do it over again, I would have chosen the same venue & vendors.Thank you Spanish monastery for making our wedding day unforgettable.
GUEST

The Monastery is really the perfect place to get married. It truly catches the ambiance of a special day. You would never know this gorgeous place was hidden there! Also, since I booked this place 1 year in advance there were some great upgrades to the grounds and looked a lot cleaner. Our ceremony was during sunset and it was not too hot even though the wedding was in June, humid, not hot.My only problem was trying to get a hold of the office during the day but other than that I had a great experience and really feel that i got my money's worth.

If you want a WOW factor for your wedding- THIS IS THE PLACE... We went to many hotels, banquet halls and even beach front locations and they were all beautiful but felt like they were all done before. We wanted the WOW factor, something magical, something that took your breathe away. The moment we walked in to the gardens and then into the clositers we knew there was no more looking- it was the perfect venue. It is romantic, intimate and yet has a grandeur vibe to it. Pictures do NOT do it justice- you MUST go there to see it for yourself. Ask for Tania- she knows the monastery very well and is very assertive. If you want candles, lighting, chairs- contact Willie there. He is a sweetheart!! He will do an amazing job decorating the grounds to your liking. This is really a piece of Europe in Miami!!!

The Spanish Monastery was an absolutely magical venue for our wedding and reception. The location has an absolutely wonderful ambience for a wedding - intimate, warm, romantic - and is particularly breathtaking at night. We received helpful service throughout the process, and we think the location is priced reasonably for being the unique venue it is. Our guests were wowed. There have been some capital improvements in the past year, and it could use a few more (e.g. restrooms). But overall a wonderful place.

If you are looking for a place to get married in, the Spanish Monastery is a must...preferably at night! This place is enchanting! When my husband and I were looking for a place to get married, we kept coming back to the idea of the monastery. Unfortunately, they were booked for months to come, until, there was a cancellation. We jumped on the date! It was in January 2011, so the weather was absolutely perfect! The wedding was at the Chapel and the reception at the Cloisters. I truly felt like my wedding was the most beautiful wedding I had ever been to. Everyone was in awe with this place and recieved nothing but the best compliments on the place. They are a bit strict with the time issue and a couple of things, but I wouldn't have had my wedding any other place!
GUEST

LOVED The Ancient Spanish Monastery. Carolina is SUCH a sweetheart and so helpful, she made the day what it was! The venue is magical, don't miss it :)

This place is a fairy tale! I couldn't have found a better place to have our wedding. The grounds and scenery fit our look and feel perfectly. Carolina also helped our night be a success by working so well with our vendors, and always being there to answer any questions I had. I recommend this venue to everyone, but hurry because it gets booked up very quickly!!

The monastery is an amazing location for a wedding. It is absolutely beautiful at night.

Everyone complimented on how beautiful the venue was. We used the chapel, gardens, and cloisters area and it worked out excellent for 160 guests. The service from the staff was excellent they even helped me hire at the last second a worker to light up candles on trees over the dance floor. I recommend hiring Tanya and Carolina for the day of event cordination they work for the monastry, and make things run smoothly. Excellent venue and amazing staff, we were extremely satisfied.
GUEST

Absolutely beautiful location. We loved it. Carolina was our wedding coordinator for our big day. The organist did a beautiful job, the grounds keeper was fantastic. Everything was ready and organized. I will continue to go back to the Monastery whenever I am in the area. We did our wedding in the Chapter House and reception in the Cloisters - it was definitely a wedding to remember. Thank youNatasha and Damon

Beautiful venue for any bride wanting a castle-like wedding! LOVED it!
GUEST

We chose the Spanish Monastery because we really like historical buildings and really liked the feel of this location. We got married in the evening: the ceremony was outside in the garden and the reception in the Cloisters. We rented tiki torches from Willie (the custodian on site, I think) and he set them all up and moved them from the ceremony to the reception. We set that service up with him directly. It just so happened that our wedding was in the coldest week in January in Miami in 20 years. Even though our day was fairly warm, the Monastery discussed and suggested alternatives for the garden ceremony which we didn't use in the end. All in all, the service was pretty good and the look of the place was very beautiful and ethereal. Everyone at the wedding was impressed with the location and I think it helped that our wedding was in the evening, which made the Monastery look even more special.
GUEST

This place is very different and beautiful. Everyone was like how did you find this place?? Inside with the flowers and decorting for a wedding was you cant even explain. The wedding coodinator there as well Tania Witten knows her stuff. You will not be dispointed. Check it out online. Not bad on price either.
GUEST

The venue is gorgeous, everyone kept raving at how beautiful it was, and that they had never been there or even heard of it before.
GUEST

The Spanish Monastery is gorgeous! We had our ceremony in the Prayer Well and the reception in the Cloisters. However, if you are having a summer wedding outdoors, consider methods of cooling your guests. (Remember this is Miami!) Although they do provide a large fan during the reception, it's not necessarily sufficient. We gave our guests paper fans, which everyone tells me was a great idea! They do provide tables (choice of rectangular or round) and chairs, but you will want to get chair covers for the reception.

We always knew we wanted a unique venue that represented both our styles. He wanted to get married in a church, I, on the other hand, wanted to get married under a tree surrounded by nature, lol… The monastery gave us everything we wanted in a venue. It was the first and only place we visited … we booked it a year and a half in advance. Our ceremony was held in the Chapel, the cocktail hour in the Garden and the reception in the Cloisters. It was a great day to get married because the weather was perfect (it’s still a bit cool at night in April). We rented the round tables for the reception and the white chairs for the cocktail hr. from them and we saved a lot on decorations because of the beauty of the place. Caroline and Tanya (on-site coordinators) were helpful and Fr. Stennette officiated our ceremony. We received our deposit about a month and half later… Some of our guests are still talking about how beautiful + unique the monastery is and how great our wedding was! We couldn’t be happier with the choice we made!
GUEST

The Ancient Spanish Monastery is unlike any other place in South Florida for a wedding. The beauty and the atmosphere is breathtaking. Our ceremony was in the chapel and the reception was in the cloisters. All of our guests couldn't get over the beauty of it all. It is a hidden jewel in the heart of North Miami Beach that will make you feel like you're in a far away place and time.
GUEST

This site is beautiful and very unique. Because of its beauty and originality this site books up fast and far in advance. Make sure you reserve your date before making any kind of plans for this site. The date we first chose was booked one year and half ahead, so we had to choose another date.

This place speaks for itself!! It is absolutely gorgeous!! My guests could not stop raving about it. :)

Our wedding was at the Monastery. It has a bit of a funny setup with the Cloisters that surround a central grassy area. It is really unique. It has that outdoor feeling without being completely exposed to the elements. The gardens are really great for pictures

The monastery was great! I happened to score the monastery with pure luck, since I called the day after someone had canceled, leaving my date open. There are two coordinators there, but I mainly dealt with Carolina who is an absolute sweetheart. The day of the wedding, it rained so we had to move from the gardens to the chapel. I freaked since initially they had said no dogs allowed in the chapel, but Carolina said she would make the exception. The entire night all of our guests told us how beautiful the venue was, how they felt they were not in Miami but in some foreign country.

What a wonderful location for us! We wanted to get married in a church, but still wanted something unique. This place is beautiful and historic. When researching for venues I saw some great photos of the Spanish Monastery and they were fabulos. My pictures came out even more amazing. We loved the gardens and everything about the Spanish Monastery for our wedding.

The word PERFECT is enough. They were flexible and willing to work wih my fiance and I. I really have no complaints. IT was perfect, just very hot (it was in August)
GUEST

It's a beautiful place, you won't be sorry to get married here. They also provide the officiant.
GUEST

Beautiful, fantastic, everything was perfect and we got our deposit back!!!

Had my ceremony at this venue and it is just beautiful. They have many spaces to choose from for both ceremony and reception. We had our ceremony in the Prayer Well with the Cloisters surrounding. It is a truly unique venue and a hidden gem.
GUEST

The most beautiful wedding site in Miami. This place will take your breath away. To this day, we still get compliments on our photos as the venue was so spectacular. The price is also very reasonable.
GUEST

This is the most beautiful place to get married. The backdrop is amazing and the history is just mind boggoling. All my guest were stunned with how beautiful the location was. The girls there were super helpful and the best part was they were pet friendly so my pup was allowed to be my ring bearer
GUEST

If your looking for a place that is ancient with history, then this is your spot. The Ancient Spanish Monastery is amazingly a beautiful location for your wedding. Its a bit pricey, but worth it. My wedding pictures are gorgeous. The ceremony was in the chapel, very ancient and just beautiful!
GUEST

Finding the Spanish monastery for our wedding was truly a blessing!! Not only because the place itself is beyond beautiful but because the staff is exremely nice and helpful!! The price is amazing and it overall, it is so beautiful that brides end up saving a lot of money on decorations, the place is already a work of art!!!!

If you are not familiar with the Ancient Spanish Monastery then you should definitely check it out. It is absolutely gorgeous! The architechure is unbelievable. When you walk in you are in for a big surprise, and I think that my guests were blown away at how amazing it looked. I also included on my programs the history of the monastery which is a very cool read about the structure. I had my ceremony in the Chapter House which had a small isle but it was nice and very intimate so family and friends could hear our vows. They have many different ceremony areas that you can use, even a Chapel. I also had my reception in the cloister area at the monastery.
Our reception was also at the Spanish Monastery in The Cloisters. It was Gorgeous! The setup was perfect. The décor we used looked amazing in the cloisters. My only complaint was that it got a bit hot, but I did get married outside in August in Florida so I guess I expected this ahead of time. No one could believe how beautiful this place was. All of my guests said they had never seen a wedding like that before, and that is why I had it there. I did not want to get married in the typical hall or "room" at a hotel. I wanted to do something different. It was exactly what I was looking for.

Absolutely beautiful venue. Great for either indoor or outdoor wedding.
About The Ancient Spanish Monastery, St. Bernard de Clairvaux
In 1925 William Randolph Hearst purchased the Cloisters and the Monastery's outbuildings. The structures were dismantled stone by stone, bound with protective hay, packed in some 11,000 wooden crates, numbered for identification and shipped to the United States. About that time, hoof and mouth disease had broken out in Segovia, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, fearing possible contagion, quarantined the shipment upon its arrival, broke open the crates and burned the hay, a possible carrier of the disease. Unfortunately, the workmen failed to replace the stones in the same numbered boxes before moving them to a warehouse. Soon after the shipment arrived, Hearst's financial problems forced most of his collection to be sold at auction. The stones remained in a warehouse in Brooklyn, New York, for 26 years. One year after Hearts' death in 1952, they were purchased by Messrs. W. Edgemon and R. Moss for use as a tourist attraction. It took 19 months and almost $1.5 million dollars to put the Monastery back together. Some of the unmatched stones still remain in the back lot; others were used in the construction of the present Church's Parish Hall.
St Bernard's Church, as we know it today, started out not on these grounds but at a savings and loan building on N.E. 167th Street. Its name at that time was "The Mission of St. John the Divine," and services were held at that location for approximately one year under the leadership of Rev. Harold L. Batchelor (1963-64). The Mission of St. John the Divine became the Church of St. Bernard de Clairvaux, named in honor of the great Saint who had been a leading influence among the Cistercians 847 years ago, and whose feast day is commemorated on August 20.
In 1964, Bishop Henry Louttit purchased the property for the Diocese of South Florida, later to become the Dioceses of Central, Southeast and Southwest Florida. Shortly thereafter, when the three dioceses ran into financial difficulties, the Monastery was put up for sale and the parishioners of St. Bernard feared a second move. During the Bishopric of the Rt. Rev. James Duncan, Col. Robert Pentland, JR, a multimillionaire banker, philanthropist and benefactor of many Episcopal churches, purchased the Cloisters and presented them to the parish of St. Bernard de Clairvaux.
