The Castle on the Hudson did an outstanding job for our wedding - the staff and sales team were amazing and everyone went above and beyond with our guests. I couldn't have chosen a better venue for our ceremony and reception. Gilbert, the general manager, was AMAZING! We booked our wedding with him, and he worked with us for the entire year to pull all of our elements together.Highly recommend the Castle on the Hudson for anyone looking for that extra special and intimate wedding feeling. LOVED THEM!

My daughter was married at the Castle 1/1/11. So many of the guests said that it was the most beautiful, magical wedding they had ever been to. The Castle was still decorated for the holidays which added to the fairytale atmosphere. The Great Hall looked amazing for the evening ceremony and reception. The staff was helpful, professional and friendly. The food at the cocktail hour and reception was beyond incredible. I have absolutely no regrets - it was perfection.

The Castle is the venue for the world's most perfect setting for a wedding. Elegant, timeless and classic, the Castle sets the perfect backdrop for your perfect day. Nearly two years before our wedding, it honestly was the only venue we ever looked at. Lisa Benoit is an amazing girl whom bent over backwards to satisfy our demanding needs. Everything from the flawless and gorgeous bridal suite, the stunning gardens at sunset, the magical Great Room and the party Caramai Ballroom; the wedding was really the time of our lives. The food is second to none. I only wish that every wedding I've ever been to had such an outstanding and quality presentation and food service. Make sure you save room for the dessert. One word to describe the Castle: AMAZING!

The staff at the Castle are amazing, so professional, helpful and kind. They really made such a difference and I knew I had nothing to worry about regarding our wedding location and that they would take care of everything...and they did! Everything from food to service to valet was perfect!

Everything went off without a hitch, and we were so happy that we chose the castle as our reception venue. The food was INCREDIBLE, and the service was unbeatable. Our guests commented on how it was like a fairytale wedding! It is not cheap, but considering that you don't have to worry about a wedding planner or decorations really (I mean, it's all built into the stunning decor of the castle), you definitely get a bang for your buck. The entire staff was so helpful and attentive that I was able to remain calm and zen the day of, knowing that everything was being taken care of.

They were wonderful to deal with. They even provided a master of ceremonies who did a great job. Half way through the organization, the person who was dealing with our wedding left the castle, and the replacement glided in seamlessly and did a great job. On the downside, they do not have a handle on the bills they issue - they issued the bill twice for the wrong amount of people attending.

WOW! Micheal and his staff treated us like royalty for more than just one day. It was wonderful.

Michael Casarella is a lifesaver. We had booked a different location but didn't feel too good about it. After meeting Mike and having him walk us through the whole process, I felt an incredible sense of relief. I cancelled with our other location, and booked Castle immediatley. All of my requests were possible and Mike would work around us. Mike is an incredibly responsive person, great customer service, and went above and beyond his call of duty to accommodate our constantly changing rooming needs. We had our rehearsal dinner at at the Castle, and from the time we checked in, through to the ceremony & reception, I was completely relaxed! Between Mike and my day of coordinator, everything was taken care of.

The most wonderful venue! A beautiful courtyard, majestic rooms, and the most attentive staff! I wish we could get married again, just to be here.

When my guests arrived they were very impressed with the views of the Hudson River and the beautiful castle. The hall is elegant and the food is very good. The staff was accommodating. The food at the cocktail hour was presented beautifully.
Absolutely gorgeous location, professional staff, and wonderful food. Highly recommended. We really enjoy taking photographs there.
One of Westchester's most beautiful locations. It is always a pleasure to play at the Castle - The building, a true castle, and surrounding gardens with breath-taking views of the Hudson River are spectacular. Everything is always done beautifully. Whether in the baronial Great Hall, the Caromai Ballroom, the tapestry room, the library, or any of the other elegantly appointed rooms, the ambiance is always very special. The staff is wonderful to work with, the gourmet food is beautifully presented, the service is superb. Nothing surpasses the Castle for a truly storybook wedding.
About Castle on the Hudson
The story of The Castle begins shortly before the turn of the 20th century, when General Howard Carroll purchased the land as a home for his growing family. Carrollcliffe, the name appropriately given to Carroll’s castle on the cliff, was built in two stages between 1897 and 1910. Working with prominent New York architect Henry Kilburn, Carroll actively assisted in planning The Castle in a style reminiscent of Norman fortification in Wales, Scotland and Ireland. The finished castle boasted 45 rooms.
From the beginning, the Oak Room, historic in its own right, served as the family dining room. Legend has it that the room’s wainscoting was brought over to Tarrytown from General Carroll’s house in St. Germain, outside Paris. Louis XIV had given this house to James II when he fled to France after having been deposed in England. It was in this room that James’ grandson Prince Charles Edward (“Bonnie Prince Charles”) and Angus MacDonald, representing the Scottish highlanders, plotted the unsuccessful uprising of 1745 in the British Isles to overturn the German king and restore the lineage of James II.
Born in Albany, N.Y. in 1854, Howard Carroll was educated in Albany, New York City, Hanover and Gottingen in Germany, and Geneva, Switzerland. His first and longest position was with The New York Times, where he served as the Washington D.C. correspondent, befriending such leaders as Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and James Garfield. After refusing several official appointments in the Chester Arthur administration, Carroll wrote several plays, including The American Countess, which ran for 200 nights on Broadway. He also authored two books.
General and Mrs. Carroll figured prominently in Westchester County and New York City society. They entertained frequently and on a grand scale. During the Hudson Fulton Tercentennial Celebration of 1909 Carroll, considered a gourmet and connoisseur of rare wines, particularly from the Rhine and Moselle regions, hosted every officer from the German fleet stationed in the Hudson River region. Included among the invited guests were foreign dignitaries and ambassadors who viewed the great river regattas from the Castle terrace.Perhaps it was such large gatherings that convinced the Carrolls to expand their castle. A newaddition completed in 1910, provided the Great Hall as the new dining room, an adjacent pantry, a formal ballroom, and additional servants’ quarters, garage and stables. Following General Carroll’s death in 1916, his widow and children, Caramai, Arthur and Lauren, occupied The Castle until 1940, when it was rented for a brief period to a local school.
As a military man, General Carroll would undoubtedly have approved of The Castle’s use during World War II. The roof and 75 foot tower were partly enclosed, and served as a sighting and listening post for use by the Tarrytown Civil Defense to monitor air traffic in the area, with volunteers serving three hour shifts around the clock.
During the late 1950’s, a new use was found for the tower, and an annual tradition born. Each winter during the holidays, a 10-foot, 90-pound star filled with 80 white lights was erected high on The Castle tower, visible for miles. This warm tradition was reinstated in 1997.
In 1981, the town of Tarrytown designated The Castle a historic landmark, protecting the outside structure from ever being changed.
The Carroll family owned and occupied The Castle until 1940. After a year as a boy’s boarding school, the property served as the headquarters of a highly respectable investment counseling business before becoming a luxury hotel.
Today’s vision for The Castle is one that will recreate the former glory days of Carrollcliffe as the site for memorable stays and glorious meals in sumptuous surroundings. The restoration of The Castle’s original suites, which offer spectacular views inside and out, and the creation of the new 24- room addition named Carrollcliffe is a salute to its proud heritage. Bringing The Castle fully up to date are recent innovations including a state-of-the-art fitness center, a heated outdoor pool and tennis court. These and many other features enable The Castle to continue making history in the 21st century.
