Dawn also came to us at the church and she was so great to work with. She kept everyone laughing all morning and she did an amazing job. I only had to reapply my lipstick one time (after dinner and cake!) I had what I thought was the biggest pimple ever and Dawn made it completely disappear. We paid for a half day (less than 5 hours) and she was able to do me, 5 bridesmaids, and both mom's. She uses all MAC products and is incredibly talented - she was definitely worth the money.
About Dawn Tunnell
Dawn's fascination with all things color, texture, and design began at an early age. With an oil painter for a mother and a color blind father, the juxtaposition of absolute comprehension of color theory on one side and total lack on the other sparked a still burning curiosity. She would learn about colors (and color theory) from her mom while working on art projects, and then try to teach them to her dad (unsuccessfully!). "My favorite game when I was a kid was to invite the neighbor kids over and point to different colors and ask my dad to name them. Of course I would always point at the ones I knew he had the hardest time with, he would get them wrong, and we would giggle! He was such a good sport about it. I still find myself fascinated by how differently people see the same color, and how emotional the connection is to them. Understanding the psychology of it all really helps me to make choices that fit a particular person perfectly."
After formal training as a floral designer and store merchandiser/displayer, she worked in that industry for several years, but it wasn't until being hired by MAC Cosmetics in 1997 that the future seemed totally clear. Originally hired as a part time makeup artist in Seattle, Washington, she quickly took on the additional role of retail manager within 3 months.
She spent three years with MAC in Seattle, while also building a reputation as a skilled make-up artist through freelance work in the Seattle fashion, print, editorial, video, commercial, and music industries. In 2001, she moved to Austin, Texas, and continued both her work as a retail manager with MAC Cosmetics and as a freelance artist. After 3 years in Texas, and many disheartening changes within the MAC corporation, she made the decision to return home to Seattle and focus solely on a freelance career and artistry. "I got a little tired of hearing my customers tell me I was "Way too good to be in a mall", so I decided to listen to them, quit my cushy job and dive headlong into the starving artist realm. My back up plan was a career in stand up comedy, and I'm kind of only half kidding!"
Starving artist didn't last long. Armed with 10 years of working on tens of thousands of faces from all ethnicities, age groups, and genders, Dawn's evident knowledge and experience in her craft inspired trust and loyalty amongst her clients, allowing her to work in all mediums from fashion to film, corporate to music, television to theater. Her makeup is most often described as clean, beautiful, precise, and very polished. She is passionate about creating flawless beauty for her clients.
"I always wanted to be a painter, but it was too intimidating because of how talented my mother is. We are very different artists, and I didn't want to disappoint myself, so I left the painting to her and expressed myself through other arts. It took me several years of doing makeup to realize that I am a painter, I just have a different medium, but I'm every bit as good with mine!"
Dawn currently resides in Seattle, Washington and travels to LA and other markets for work.
