It took forever for anyone to get back to me via email and I did leave my phone number in a voicemaill and no one ever bothered to call, they do all the correspondence through email. It took 10 days for for someone to actually contact me and then I had 2 different people email me the same day to book a meeting with me, when I had already booked one earlier that day. There was a lot of confusion around even booking a meeting. Despite my gut feeling, I decided to go for the consultation. I met with Ciara and Simon and the meeting took about 2 hours. Throughout those 2 hours, Ciara and Simon just spent that time telling me how fantastic they were and and they won an award for best wedding ceremony (3 years ago) and that they are the best in the city and the first to do anything that no other planner can do and i should hire them because Ciara coaches every planner in the city. They asked few questions about my wedding and after everything I explained they told me what they did for their wedding and how awesome it was. At the end of that "consultation" they gave me a contract and put a pen in my hand and basically told me to sign the contract there. The best part is that to hire them to be my planner that it would be $10,000, almost triple my budget and they knew before the meeting. They didn't care at all about me and my budget they only cared about making a sale. I took the contract home and read it very carefully and there are a lot of hidden costs they don't even mention to you in the meeting. I even asked this question and Simon just waived his hands around and told me it was just the standard stuff. I could never get a straight answer out of either Ciara nor Simon and Ciara basically just dodged everything I asked her and told me that we could go over it when I hired them. Even if you want to bring in your own decor for your own wedding, you have to pay them. Although I'm sure Firefly Occasions does beautiful weddings, their business approach is not in the best interest of the client. My good friend just used them for her wedding and they completely ignored her decor budget and designed the wedding more than double the budget. Beware of their scam tactics brides.

Vendor response to review

Hello- this is Ciara Daykin, CEO of Firefly Occasions. I'm glad for the opportunity to respond to your experience with our company. First I am sad to hear that your experience was not what we would have hoped it to be. There are several reasons for that which I can identify by reading your comments which I will elaborate on here.

As your post did not contain who are you I am not going to assume that you were one bride or another but will rather address your specific comments.

Booking a meeting/ correspondence- I appreciate hearing from you about not feeling served upon your inquiry. It is always our intention to get back to interested brides promptly and while I am unsure of when your experience occurred, we have recently reviewed our process for getting back to brides and grooms. There may have been an issue with us working on an event at that time or being out of town and unable to respond but we have a very clear guideline now of who responds to inquiries, how quickly, and the process for booking appointments.

Meeting- We want our meetings to be a back and forth of getting to know one another. It is important that we get to know you and for you to learn about us. In your circumstance there was obviously not a fit and I hope you did find a planner to meet your needs. We all have our "off days" and if Simon and I came across as snobby or inauthentic in any way that was not our intention. We really love what we do but perhaps our enthusiasm for planning weddings and working with wonderful people came across as boasting but it was not intended that way.

Coaching- I do coach other planners and some of them do operate in Calgary. I view this as an example of our dedication to the industry on a whole. We have helped other Calgary planners grow their business around the brides that they will best serve. I am thrilled to hear that other planners in the city, regardless of whether I coach them or not, are receiving business. Wedding planning is a difficult business to do full time and when other planners are securing business it is good for the entire industry. Mentioning my coaching relationship is not meant to say I'm better than any other planner but rather that we have a wonderful community of connected planners here whom I respect. I plan in a certain way and other planners plan in their way. Brides need to choose planners who are the best fit for them as it is best for all parties involved.

Am I the best in the city?- I am the best at being myself and planning weddings in the Firefly Occasions style of planning. Other planners are the best when their style is based on who they are and what makes them the most happy. I am at my best when I'm planning and designing with a truly inspiring client with exciting ideas.

Awards- We did win an award a couple of years ago and we are very proud of the one that you reference but we have won other awards since then and I was nominated for Canadian Event Professional of the Year most recently. Many of the clients we work with value a high level of confidentiality and we therefore do not submit their weddings for awards out of respect for our relationship with them. We love when clients are excited about their weddings and want to share them with the world whether by submitting for an award, a magazine spread or a blog feature. The most important thing for us is that our clients love their wedding.

Pricing- We base our pricing every time on the services that the bride and groom describe that they need in our meeting. When you ask for a certain level of service we will tell you honestly what that level of service will cost if you want to work with us. We service a variety of budgets at different service price points. I personally limit the number of clients I work with one on one so that I can provide a high level of service. If you were quoted the price mentioned above it would have been our impression of your expectations that you required service at that level and it may have been at a time where we were unable to offer a lower priced program based on availability of our planners.

Making the Sale- We care a lot about the people that we work for but we also are running a business. We are at our best planning weddings and keeping our business healthy and successful when we properly quote people based on their expectations. I don't want to "make a sale" when the fit between us and the couple is not there and in your case I think you made the right choice not to work with us.

Contract- We have been in business going on 8 years now and have had our contracts reviewed by our lawyers many times over those years. The intention of our contract is to be incredibly transparent and when given the chance I walk each couple through the contract. The personal description of Simon and I in regards to explaining details of the contract does not sound like us but that was obviously your impression. We have discussed your review at length and have re-evaluated our contract terms and made a conscious effort to make sure that no couple leaves our office without understanding the contract and if time does not allow for it then we book a phone call to review.

Booking Immediately- I am always going to ask a couple if they would like to book right away with us if the situation warrants it. We have in the past included incentives for couples to make a decision immediately. Moving forward, we still ask for the business but discuss the timeline for signing with the couple that they would be comfortable with. I feel that if we are truly meant to be connected in planning a wedding with a couple that it will happen. Couples are invited to come in and meet with us to get to know us, no pressure to sign on, but rather truly to make sure this is the right fit for them.

Using Your Own Decor- The reason we charge a handling fee around using your own decor is from many experiences of being caught in a bind trying to get everything together on a wedding day with items that do not come to us as originally represented. Unpacking and assembling decor site unseen is not in the best interest of anyone. I also don't know if the quality of what you're getting is the quality we need and can ensure when we secure all decor. A large part of our business is event design and in order for us to do this to our best ability we do feel that all decor needs to be secured through us.

Decor Budget- I'm not sure who your friend is but I can tell you our process for discovering the event design that will please our clients. We have an initial decor meeting and have clients go through many magazines and design books showing us what they like and don't like with no budget in mind. If you showed us a picture and I immediately told you that you couldn't afford it then your creativity would be squashed. We then base the quote on the ideas from that meeting and make it very clear that it is a starting point and that now we know the style and atmosphere desired by the couple we can get this same look but at their budget if the quote is not aligned with their budget. Quite often clients don't know what their decor budget is because they are unsure of costs, the logistics of their ideas and even what they are going to end up wanting. The process of determining the final decor invoice is based on feedback from the client and there are many opportunities to go back and forth on this prior to the wedding. There are some things however that cannot be reduced in price based on the availability of materials and scope of the ideas. But it is always the client's choice whether or not those elements will be included in their final decor plan.

I bought Ciara Daykin's wedding planning CDs after seeing her recommend them on her Firefly occasions website. They came packaged in Firefly Occasions packaging so as far as I am concerned they are a Firefly Occasions product.

What a horrible product.

First, she is eating or drinking or something through all of the "calls". Given her history on here of leaving an essay in response to any negative comments I am sure she will deny doing this but on my CDs she was chewing and slurping while talking. Second, she is clearly using a call program that she is not competant in. She keeps dropping people off the call, rambling about trying to use different settings and otherwise sounding like she has no idea what she's doing.

As for the "great ideas" promised by the package? There was NOTHING on here that you couldn't get, for free, by watching a single episode of any wedding show. I suffered through the whole package of CDs (something like 16 hours of drivel) and didn't come away with a single thing I could use for my wedding that I didn't already know. Maybe next time she should spend less time coming up with a pretentious long-winded name for her CD product and more time concentrating on actual content.

In short, the CD collection she put out was sloppy, unprofessional and contained no useful content. When I emailed Firefly and Ciara to tell them about my disappointment in their product I was ignored, my concerns were never answered and then they put me onto their spam email list and I STILL get emails from them trying to convince me to buy more of their products for even more money. Having experienced her 'product' and after encountering her at various bridal fairs I wouldn't let this woman plan my kid's 3rd birthday party.

I'm sure in her response to this she is going to argue that I didn't "hire" her but rather bought a CD package. I have no problem stating this is true. But every single product you put out on the market is a reflection of your professional attitude and the fact that she allowed this sloppy product to go to market with Firefly's name on it tells me that she is more interested in taking your money and running than she is in providing a quality product that fills the needs of her customers. If she is willing to take my hard-earned money in exchange for a sub-par product she will have no problems with offering you a sub-par product for your money either.

I do have to say that I am really glad I decided to go with a wedding planner, it made the say so much more easier to enjoy and not having to worry about the small things.
I would recommend Firefly Occasions for anyone who wants a stress free wedding.

Read their contract carefully - it's rather vague. We booked their services for what we thought was the "full meal deal" - we were led to believe from our preliminary conversations that we would discuss our ideas then let them loose to gather information that we would then choose from, with the planners contacting the vendors on our behalf. Instead, we ended up doing a lot of the legwork ourselves and telling the planners who we had booked. They were definitely undergoing some "growing pains" when we booked their services, which translated to long delays between email or telephone responses. They were however wonderful on the day of - everything was set up beautifully and all the details were looked after.

Vendor response to review

It is our intention for our contracts to be very clear in regards to the services that we are offering to our clients. I am sad to hear that there was some confusion for you around the level of service we were providing. In our contract we specifically state that if there is an issue that both the client and the planner agree to address it openly and immediately as there is obviously nothing we can do after your wedding has occurred.

We have reviewed our contract based on your comment and ensured that there is no "vagueness" in anyway. We have also implemented a policy of personally reviewing each section with potential clients either in person or via phone before they sign so there is no misrepresentation on our part as that is never our intention.

The growing pains your are referring to are in regards to the fact that we (Ciara and Simon) welcomed our son to the world in July 2010. Parenthood is a new and exciting adventure for us and while we did our best to prepare our business for the pressures that having an infant at the beginning of wedding season would bring we let you down and for that I apologize. We have restructured our business and our overall operations to focus on the foundation upon which our company was built (creating beautiful weddings with great couples we establish a true connection with) and have made significant strides in regards to enhancing our customer's experience overall. There is always room to learn, grow and do things better than you did before and we continue to strive for improvement each and every day.

I am glad to hear that you enjoyed your wedding day and I'm glad that in the end it was a positive experience. Thank you for your comments and giving us the opportunity to enhance our ongoing service.

Firefly provided our day of wedding planning and we truly couldn't have done it without them! They made our wedding day worry free and seamless. The creativity and overall vision was beyond anything I could have imagined, our wedding was beautiful and we loved every minute of it. I would highly reccommend the Firefly team for all of your wedding planning needs... it will be money well spent!

The created the vision I wanted and then went on to do what I didn't even know I wanted. It was a Midsummers Nights Dream theme and what an amazing job they did in creating the magic and sparkle that accompanied the evening.

Have you ever wondered if your wedding could be all that and more? Well, it can and Firefly Occasions helped us to achieve all that and much more!
Ciara and Simon are visionaries and they helped us execute our vision to the very last detail. Our guests were not only surprised by every single detail but they were also curious as to what was going on. When we first met with Ciara and Simon they suggested to us to change things up a bit. We listened and decided to flip the wedding itinerary on it's head...literally. Our guests were treated to an amazing dinner at The Ranche restaurant in Fish Creek Park and then ushered outside for the ceremony and ended with a dessert reception.

In the end, we were able to enjoy our evening and not worry about a single thing. That is priceless!

We could not have planned a more perfect evening! Thank you Ciara, Simon and the Firefly Occasions team for all your hard work.

Vendor recommendation from Creative Weddings and Occasions

Over the past year, I had the opportunity to work with Ciara and Simon Daykin on four of their decor set-ups for their weddings. During this time, it became very clear why they are the "haute couture" of wedding planning in not only Calgary, but Canada and the United States as well. They don't settle for what others do, but are always looking for that unique twist or edge, that will help their client's wedding stand out from all the rest. Whether it was recreating a "Midsummer's Night Dream" or making it snow at midnight at a New Year's Eve wedding, Firefly Occasions always brings it to the next level. Brides always ask me in the weeks leading up to their wedding, “Ciara, what advice to you have for me on my wedding day?”
Well, the answer is LOTS… but there are really 3 key things that I think are important to remember on your wedding day that will help you get through the day stress free and truly enjoy it.

Here are my 3 Big Wedding Day Tips for the Bride:

It Goes By So Fast - You’ve probably heard a lot of brides say that their wedding day went by so fast. Well, it is only a day after all and days always seem to go by faster when you’re busy and having fun. I always tell my brides that it’s important to stop during the day and take in certain moments so that they are forever imprinted into your memory. When you’re walking down the aisle, really relish the experience. When you’re saying your vows, look into his eyes and take your time. When you’re sitting at the head table, look out at all your guests enjoying themselves (and the centerpieces you picked out)

Be Gracious – It’s a big day for you but it’s also a big day for your Mother, your Father, your bridesmaids and everyone close to you. There are a lot of emotions running through the air so it’s really important to be a gracious, humble bride. Just because it’s your day doesn’t mean common courtesies like please and thank you go out the window. Think before you speak… or snap… this is a day that will hold a lot of memories and you want them all to be great

Thank Everyone – I can’t say this enough- make sure you thank EVERYONE. Make a list before your wedding of everyone who’s helped you with your wedding. Entire friendships have been ruined because a bride and groom forget to thank their friend for helping with an element of their wedding. Especially thank your family and his family (even if you don’t think they totally deserve it). It’s all about being gracious right?? You can’t thank everyone enough on this day.

Saving the Date

As you may have noticed, it is becoming more and more common to receive a Save the Date card in the mail before the actual wedding invitation. Does this mean, now that you are engaged, that you should be sending out Save the Dates?

It’s not a bad idea! If you are planning a destination wedding, or if your wedding will take place during a holiday, Save the Date cards are especially helpful. But, no matter what kind of plans you have for your wedding, your guests will appreciate the advance notice.

Save the Date cards can be mailed out as early as you want, but make sure you have given your guest list some thought first, and make sure you mention that an invitation will follow. Then, make sure that everyone who gets a Save the Date card also gets an invitation.

Keep your Save the Date cards very simple. All you really need to include are your names, date and location. One fun idea is to send out magnets with the information printed on them. That way, a guest can put it on their refrigerator so they don’t forget!

Are Wedding Favors a Necessity?

In planning your wedding, you, like many others, may be wondering if wedding favors are a necessity. Well, the answer to that is really just a matter of opinion!
In a poll done on www.theknot.com, the results were a complete split. Those for wedding favors all said that it was the least a bride and groom could do to say “thank you” to their guests for sharing their special day with them. Those against said that good food and a nice time should be enough to say “thank you,” and that unless they are edible or a donation to charity, they are a waste of time.

Using your wedding favors as a way to give to charity is a great idea. It can make your special day even more grand. Here are some ideas of ways you can give.
You could plant a tree in the name of each guest who attends. It’s very easy to do- just go to the donate-a-tree section on www.arborday.com and do it all online! The cost is 1$ per guest.

Another easy way to give back is to donate to the victims of crime and disaster. For example, in memory of the victims of September 11, you could donate to the Twin Towers Fund.

Other great ideas if you are looking to donate to a national cause are SavetheElephants.com, Sierraclub.org, or GreenpeaceUSA.org. You can also check out the IDo Foundation. Don’t forget, too, that there are probably many local causes in your area that could use your support as well.

If you do decide to make a donation in the name of your guests, make sure to let them know! A simple card placed on the tables for guests could explain the donation and thank your guests for sharing the occasion with you.
