In so many ways I would recommend having your wedding and reception at 1st Unitarian. Our wedding was at the historic Eliot chapel and our reception at the Buchan LEED certified hall. We had a beautiful courtyard for our use, an area for the children to play, plenty of room for our guests, a professional kitchen for our caterer to use, and a giving professional staff to assist us. The only items we needed to rent were linens and bistro tables that were outside. Our budget was VERY tight. Using the First Unitarian church allowed us to stay within our budget, and provide a elegant setting for our guests.

Using the First Unitarian Church as our ceremony venue was the first thing I booked when I became engaged. I knew I wanted to get married there because it was my childhood church and has a beautiful sanctuary. However, before going with "First Church" as it is affectionatley known in Portland, I called around to the other churches in downtown Portland. I was shocked to discover that most of them charged $1,500+ to do the ceremony. First Church was considerably less (although I think they may have raised their prices a bit since our ceremony).
Holli is the contact person there and she is simply FABULOUS. At first we connected only via phone and email and she always got back to me in a timely manner. When I arrived in Portland a week before our wedding my mom and I visited the church and she accompanied us. She was very professional and kind, answering all of our questions and making good suggestions. Holli was also on site the day of the wedding and was a friendly and calm demeanor. The church looked absolutely stunning and I cannot wait to see pictures.
I would highly recommend this church! You can bring in anyone you want to marry you, and the church has a list of recommendations if you need them.

While the site was beautiful and the wedding turned out perfectly, I had a bit of trouble working with the churches coordinators. They lost my info and I ended up calling to remind them to schedule us for a consultation. Plus some of their policies weren’t clear and seemed to change based on who you were talking to. About two weeks before the ceremony we were told that either we had to get live musicians or licensing for the songs we wanted to play if we were using recorded music. Not a big deal, if you are told in advance, but this point was not made in any of the paperwork and it sent us into a bit of a mad dash to find musicians.
