About Greyhound Tavern
"The Greyhound Tavern (originally the Dixie Tea Room) was built in 1921. The two original rooms are still occupied today and are referred to as the "Tavern Room" and the "Hunt Room." Johnny Hauer was the first owner and operated the Dixie Tea Room as an ice cream parlor, and sold other notions of various assortments. The Dixie Tea Room was conveniently located at the "End of the Line" where streetcars completed their journey south, make the big turn, and headed back to Cincinnati.
In the thirties, Al Frisch purchased the business and renamed it the Greyhound Grill in honor of his brother Benny, who was a successful greyhound dog trainer in Florida. Al's sister, Irene, and mother, Mary, did the cooking, which included homemade ice cream, soups, and their famous "Chicken" and "Jack Salmon" setups, which sold for fifty cents.
The ice cream parlor was eventually eliminated, the bar relocated to its present location and a beer garden with its lively juke box was added for guests' enjoyment and entertainment. Along with these changes emerged the "world famous" onion rings, juicy burgers, and double-deckers for diners' enjoyment.
Most recently, the Grill has become the "Tavern" with many changes, not only to the building, but to the menu as well. Today, the Greyhound Tavern is still well known for its traditional favorites, but it has also become a prime spot for chops, steaks, seafood and other specialties prepared by the chef and his staff.
Truly, the Greyhound Tavern is a Fort Mitchell landmark! Come and enjoy your visit with us and please feel free to browse around to see what has happened during the last century!"
"Thank you for thinking of the Greyhound Tavern for your special occasion.
In order to ensure proper service and the highest quality of food, we ask that you limit your entree selections to two (2) items. We will need a confirmation of how many guests and of how many of each entree at least forty-eight (48) hours in advance. You will be charged for the number of confirmed meals or the number of confirmed meals plus a $17.00 fee for any thing shy of forty adult meals.
If children will be present for the event, smaller portions and special menu items are available. Children’s meals do not apply to the required forty (40) adult guests but they do require a seat and must be considered in table arrangements and meal count confirmation.
Please note that in addition to the listed prices, sales tax of six percent (6%) and a service fee of twenty percent (20%) will be added to your total bill. Prices are subject to change.
Again, thank you for your interest in our restaurant. If you have any questions or need additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to planning your function with you.'
