About Hilker's Fabric & Couture Care -Wedding Gown Cleaning Specialists
At Hilker’s Fabric and Couture Care we are the Research Triangle’s only licensed Wedding Gown Cleaning Specialists and, with our museum quality cleaning and preservation storage process, your gown will look as good in 60
years as on your Wedding day. We have happily been serving brides across the state from Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and the Triad, to Kill Devil Hills, Wilmington, Charlotte and Asheville for 85 years! At Hilker’s Fabric and Couture Care we
also accept mail-ins for the convenience of anyone that cannot make the drive to Raleigh. Please call ahead to discuss our mail-in process with our Wedding Gown Specialist.
The cleaning and preservation process at Hilker's Fabric and Couture Care starts with a thorough inspection of the entire dress for minor flaws or necessary repairs, including small rips, loose beads or fallen trim. After making any necessary repairs, the actual pre-cleaning and cleaning process begins. Each gown is hand-treated and cleaned individually.
Once all the treatments are done, we begin the gentle, hand-finishing process that involves dedicated care and vision. At Hilker's Fabric and Couture Care, we have a great deal of pride in preserving the original lay and designs of the gown, and a flawless preservation can only be achieved through hand-finishing like ours. To complete the preservation process, the gown goes through another careful and comprehensive inspection and is stored in a museum-quality box to ensure the condition of your gown for years to come.
International Guarantee: As the only Triangle member of the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists, Hilker’s Fabric and Couture Care provides clients with a Lifetime Guarantee for Wedding gown preservation services. Members of the organization are represented in more than 500 cities around the world. Simply return your gown to any participating Wedding Gown Specialist who will inspect and press the gown at no charge.
Our restoration experts also specialize in restoring antique vintage gowns to the true color without damage to delicate fabrics or dyes, and our process removes stains and discoloration that ordinary dry cleaners cannot. We hand clean all wedding, couture and vintage gowns and treat them with our anti-sugar stain treatment to remove invisible stains properly; ensuring they do not resurface in the future. At Hilker’s Fabric and Couture Care we make your dream of wearing that family heirloom possible.
"My Aunt had the most beautiful satin wedding gown that unfortunately was not kept in the proper condition. The gown had been stored incorrectly for 60 years! After taking my aunts wedding gown to Hilker’s Fabric and Couture Care to be restored and preserved it is now looking beautiful again! The gown looked so fabulous once it was complete that it is now on display in our Brides Dressing Room in the Angus Barn Pavilion."

Additional Advice
How do you clean my gown? Our Certified Wedding Gown SpecialistsTM carefully hand clean every gown with gentle chemicals that dissolve the different kinds of stains on your gown. Then your gown is rinsed in pure solvent, the one best for your gown, until it is completely clean.
What is preservation? Your clean gown is carefully packed with acid-free tissue in a museum-quality wedding chest that protects your gown from the air and light that cause unprotected gowns to yellow.
Why is your process different from others? Spills such as soda, wine and cake (many times caused by a guest and unnoticed by the bride) contain sugar and often dry without leaving a visible mark. Sugar is not dissolved during ordinary dry cleaning and caramelizes over time into ugly brown stains. We take an extra step to be sure all stains, both seen and unseen, are removed.
Is your wedding chest different from others? Our trademarked MuseumCareTM wedding chest is completely acid-free, not just pH neutral. Boxes that are only pH-neutral are not as safe for your gown, and ordinary boxes and tissue are heavy in acid, which damages fabric. Ordinary boxes and tissue cause yellowing and “burn” gowns leaving dark brown streaks wherever the fabric touches the box.
Can I see my gown when it is in the wedding chest? You can see your gown through an oval window made of polypropylene, an inert plastic that will not yellow or damage your gown. Some of our members do not use this lid. Instead they wrap the gown in muslin, and you can fold back the muslin to view your gown.
What else can I preserve with my gown? Such things as a headpiece and veil, petticoat, gloves, garter, and handkerchief may be stored with your gown. There may be an additional charge. You may also choose to store your things in more than one chest. Shoes should not be stored with the gown because fumes from the leather and glue may cause damage.
We can also preserve other special garments such as christening gowns, communion dresses, quinceaneras gowns, military uniforms, etc.
Will you make repairs to my gown? We can make any needed repairs. For some repairs there may be an additional charge.
What is the guarantee? 100% international guarantee against caramelized sugar stains or yellowing of your gown backed by Certified Wedding Gown SpecialistsTM in more than 500 cities around the world. Return gown to any participating Specialist who will inspect the gown and press it at no charge.
What if I open my gown? The guarantee is not voided, but improper handling of the gown may cause damage, and it should be resealed. If your gown is handled excessively or soiled it should be cleaned and preserved again.
