Icing on the Cake

My fiancé, MOH and I went to a cake tasting at Icing on the Cake yesterday and, unfortunately, we weren’t that impressed.

Though the cake was some of the best we’ve tasted, the staff wasn’t prepared for our appointment. We had to stand at the side of the shop – no place to sit – and wait for them to fill and ice cupcakes based on the flavor combinations we’re interested in. It’s a cool concept but not realistic since wedding cakes are stacked/iced a day or two in advance, so there is no way the cake will be that moist and fresh. It’s a little misleading.

Other cons:

They’ll only create round cakes that are separated by pillars; no stacked cakes

There’s a $50 extra charge for Sunday delivery

Price was $150 - $250 more expensive that other quotes we’ve received

Icing on the Cake is a really cute bakery in Los Gatos, and I came with high expectations, having read a ton of great reviews online. I was a bit disappointed that they did not have any private cake tastings. Instead, they have tastings that are first-come, first-serve every 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month. Get there early, because when I went, there were a looot of other couples in this little tiny store waiting in line for a taste. Their cake is decent but I think it's definitely on the "too sugary" side. Except for their banana cake - it's too die for...sooo good. I would go here to get desserts for your rehearsal dinner, but I think a wedding cake would be way too much sugariness. Unless you like the banana cake. Also, if you like cupcakes instead of a wedding cake, this place might be a good option too.

Icing on the Cake was maybe the 7th cake place we went tasting, and after tasting the wonderful cupcakes (that's how they do their tasting) we finally found the cake for our wedding! We had vanilla, chocolate, and lemon, and we were very happy with how it turned out; we also received a lot of compliments on the cake. Not as important, but the bakery also sells a lot of other tasty items. Also, while the bakery itself is a bit pricey, the cake prices were very reasonable compared to many other places we tasted. Highly recommended!
