J & J Photography

J&J Photography (Jared Slater) photographed our wedding in September 2011 and I cannot say enough positive and glowing things about him! Quite simply, Jared is AMAZING at what he does!

I first heard of Jared through publicity surrounding his "Inequality in Marriage" discount that he provides to gay couples. While pricing was certainly a factor in choosing a photographer, it was more important to find the right match in photographic style and personality. Still, it was wonderful to see Jared taking such a strong stand on marriage equality. It intrigued me to learn more about him and his work.

From my initial phone call with him, I suspected he might be the right match. He was laid back, funny and was clearly passionate about photography. Plus, it was important to us that we get a natural, photo-journalistic style for the wedding; we did not want lots of posed pictures taken all day long. I also liked that Jared had lots of experience shooting for theater and headshots - this helps him know how to really capture subtle emotions.

When I finally met Jared in person, the decision was made. It was clear that Jared was the right fit personality and style wise. I had interviewed by phone over a dozen photographers and the decision of which to select was not even close!

A few months after booking Jared for the wedding (hint: he books up fast, so call him early!) my partner and I set up an engagement photo shoot in Central Park. This was an excellent way for us to get comfortable in front of the camera. And it was a good thing for us - I was much more uncomfortable at first than I expected, but Jared was great at warming us up and getting us relaxed. The pictures came out wonderfully!

Our weekend was held over a September weekend in the Finger Lakes and Jared photographed a dinner event, the ceremony and the reception. AMAZING PHOTOGRAPHS!!! He took incredible photos at a difficult-to-navigate ceremony (it was in a circle outdoors). He sped through (at our urging) the staged family photos pre-ceremony. And he captured a ton of great candid and emotional shots throughout the reception. We knew Jared would do a terrific job - the photos were better than we ever could have expected! And, just as important, Jared was a delight at the wedding! While he often was out-of-sight snapping away, our guests LOVED chatting with him. He is funny, engaging and friendly.

We have so many great memories now captured forever and have Jared to thank! I almost wish I could have another wedding just to work with Jared again!

I can't say enough great things about Jared and J&J Photography. He was extremely communicative and collaborative from day one. My fiance and I were looking for a photographer to capture the special moments of the day (rather than solely focusing on portraits)and we couldn't be happier with our wedding photos! Jared wasn't pushy or intrusive at all. We were so pleasantly surprised by some moments he captured-- we never knew he was taking them! I would recommend J&J Photography in a heart beat.

My husband and I wanted a wedding that was going to be more a party than the usual sit-down dinner, with some dancing in the mix. Therefore, we wanted a photographer who was going to be able to capture the energy of the night without posing people for pictures. Jared was perfect. For a huge portion of reception, I would only see a fragment of him out of the corner of my eye. The glimpse of a lens here, his black shirt there. But I felt like I never really saw him. And then I saw the pictures and felt that perhaps it was time to get my eyes checked. Apparently, he had been everywhere. His pictures captured our entire event, the people in the pictures looked fantastic and we have more memories caught on digital film than I ever would have imagined.
In the planning phases, he was flexible and easy to work with. We told him what we wanted to do, pictures in the city beforehand, followed by a few posed pictures prior to the reception and then we wanted pictures of our celebration. What we wanted was exactly what we got. He even scouted out some locations for our candid pre-ceremony shots, and then was willing to just walk around and let the locations come to us.
I would recommend Jared to anyone I know. He was professional, courteous and we had a great time working with him.

Working with Jared was one of the best and simplest parts of our planning. He was there on time and blended in, he was very stealth about his where he was at all times. He was funning and easy going during the formal photo shoots and although it was freezing, he put us all at ease. The final results were simply breathtaking, his artist genius is quite apparent. We loved every aspect of working with Jared and would highly recommend that if you want your day captured perfectly, that you go with J and J Photography!!

Jared was a fantastic photographer...this was our second wedding, with lots of combinations of family, and we wanted less "classic" poses and more candids. He was incredibly unobtrusive, and after looking at the photos, I kept thinking..."how did he get that one?" He was fun to work with, and totally put my husband and I at ease....a bride's dream!

I totally recommend Jared! He is amazing to work with. He is very
communicative, friendly and professional. He really helped my husband

Jared, is a ninja! I have worked with many photographers in my career and have worked in some challenging venues and I am still trying to figure out how Jared was able to capture some of the shots he did. I do not remember him hanging off of anything and yet he did not miss ONE important moment and captured so many candied others. Without a doubt J&J Photography is a must have vendor at your wedding!

Jared is a wonderful and creative photographer with a fantastic artistic eye. He deftly moves throughout the venue to capture just the right shots during the ceremony, and always does so with a smile!

Jared is a fantastic photographer. My husband and I HATE having our picture taken, and Jared truly was like a ninja, quietly taking all the must have photos and moments that, as we wanted, were natural and unposed. Even the "posed" pics reflected our friends and family's personalities.
