During a recent inspection of my fiance's engagement ring, it was discovered that there was a small chip on the side of the diamond. This chip is not noticeable to the naked eye. First of all, I was disappointed in the fact that her diamond had a chip in it and she has only worn it for a year, not to mention we are not even married yet and I still have payments left on an 11K ring. But, that is not my biggest concern/complaint. My issue was with the overall general lack of concern and compassion shown by both the store and customer service because we were two months past inspection. Apparently this null and voids EVERYTHING that Jared offers as a guarantee! They do not explain that to you when you overpay for their diamonds. They do everything they can to make you feel like you will be taken care of for all of your years. Well, that is completely false!
Their initial answer was to buy a new diamond at retail ($7700) to replace the old one. After some arguing with the store, they were willing to sell it to me at cost ($5400). Now, that right there shows you the markup that they place on diamonds. Had I been armed with this information at the time of purchase, I would have actually tried to haggle, but hindsight is 20/20. Anyway, what they did not understand was that I had no intention of purchasing a new diamond! Even though I continued to repeat myself, they offered no alternatives. I called customer service and the first person I spoke with could care less about my issue. After fighting to get a supervisor on the phone, I was able to find some compassion, but no alternative.
Their main reasoning for not assisting in the matter was due to the fact that I violated the warranty by coming in two months late. Basically, because I was two months late and they discovered a chip, the diamond was no longer warrantied from there on out...against ANYTHING! Interestingly, I actually had an assistant manager at the store inform me that a Jared warranty is like insurance, if you do not pay the insurance, you are not covered. Seriously?!?!? A warranty is called a warranty for a reason. Insurance is insurance, for a reason. They are NOT the same! One is paid for up front (built into cost) and a customer often purchases a product of such magnitude based on a company's willingness to stand behind their product. Insurance is paid to a second-party, often monthly and often with a deductible. My warranty on my GMC expired after 36,000 miles. I took it in at 50,000 miles because the fuel pump was shot. Although my warranty had expired, GMC still replaced the fuel pump at no cost to me because they did not feel that the fuel pump should have failed so soon. I never asked, they just said that is what they were going to do. That's customer care! I is not like I am talking about a $200 necklace here or a Pandora bracelet. It is an engagement that cost me 5 figures!
Anyway, there is much more to this story, to include customer service placing the burden on the store and the store placing the burden on customer service. But ultimately, what I came away with was that Jared could care less about their customers and it is all about the bottom dollar. I will never shop at a chain jewelery store again and I am going to tell my story to every social network site I can find in the hope that people do not spend their hard earned money on Jared's over-priced merchandise, weak warranty and uncaring staff.
If you live in the Ashburn/Sterling/Leesburg area, there are several established mom and pop jewelers in downtown Leesburg that can attend to your needs.
We got the engagement ring, wedding bands, my necklace, and my husband's watch from Jared's in Dulles, VA, Fairfax, VA and San Diego, CA. The Dulles and San Diego stores are absolutely a pleasure to work with!!! They are so nice and actually listen to you budget wise and what you want!! I can't say the same for Fairfax, VA store as they tried to get me to go $1200 over my budget when they found out it as my wedding and then said that I bought the different pieces from stores I had not gone too and that those other stores put in the wrong information when both the other two had no problems when I went to both of those stores finding the other!!! If you are in the Fairfax county area I would definitely drive the extra 15 minutes to Dulles where they are just more helpful and don't try to push things on you!!! Otherwise everything has been great and the staff at Dulles and San Diego stores have been wonderul and pleasant to work with!!!
we had a nice experience looking at rings... we already knew what we wanted going in so to look around was fun. they delivered on time
Overall the staff is great; we only had 1 bad experience when going in there. One woman had told us that we could hold the rings on our Jared credit card but next time we come in to pick up the rings we should tell them to change it so we can get on the 1 year no interest plan. The woman who helped us the next time we came in didnt really understand why we were told to do it this way and she had to call customer service. There was a bit of a language barrier and I also overheard her speaking with another colleague about why did we do this, why didnt we do it this way the first time, etc. I was quite annoyed but after continuing to have to work with her to fix the issue, her attitude got better. We did get a nice handwritten letter in the mail a few days later, thanking us for coming into the store (not from her but from another gentleman that always helps us).
One more issue one girl told us the wedding band my finance wanted couldnt be resized (the one in the store) so we would have to order another one. We were quoted one price but found out a few days later that the price had gone up. We went into the store to pick out another ring when another associate told us the one in the store could be resized for the price we were quoted. So in the end we were able to get the exact ring we wanted, I think there was just some miscommunication between associates on what they could and couldnt do with the jewelry.
The store also refurbished my engagement ring right before the wedding so it would look new. Since weve gone in several times after the wedding for other services the staff has always been very friendly and helpful.
Normally they are very helpful; always offering us drinks and have never once treated us like we shouldnt be in there. My engagement ring and both of our wedding bands came from here and I would return in the future. My finance has bought several other items from this store as well.
The people at Jared's in Dulles, VA are very professional. There onsite sizing and other services are the best (and perhaps the only in the area) My hadn crafter engagement ring (made by my finacee's friend) was a little too tight at first. With Jared's I was able to get it re-sized over my lunch break! We purchased our wedding bands from Jared's.
We were looking for a custom wedding band for me and went to Jared's because we thought they were know for "custom" jewelry. We ended going there about 3 or 4 times. The first time, we told the salesperson what we wanted for my ring. She actually ended up being a manager. She didn't know if they could do the custom ring and would have to put in a "request". She took our phone numbers and said she would call us when she heard an answer. We never heard from her. We decided to stop in the store to do some more investigating. Of course, the manager we worked with before wasn't there. We then had to tell our story again, to another salesperson, Drew. He, again, put in the "request" and said he would call with an answer. We never heard from him. For some reason, we went back to Jared's to find an answer. Drew was working that evening and when we approached him, he couldn't remember at first what we were talking about and when he figured it out, he said they couldn't do it. We then started looking at plain wedding bands. I had a idea of what I wanted and Drew kept "shooting" down my suggestions. He would flat out say "no" or try to steer me in other (uglier) direction. We finally has enough and left and never went back. If you must go to Jareds, just don't work with Drew!! We finally had success with Reed's Jewelers (which I have also reviewed).
