I regret having to write this because I had SUCH a beautiful wedding at the Kona Kai, but I was very disappointed overall with the staff at the Kona Kai. The catering/convention manager that we had to work with for the wedding was negative and close-minded, and was often rude to me and my wedding coordinator. Luckily we didn't need her opinion too much on how to run the event, and as a result it was amazing. Also the staff working the hotel blocks and front desk were very unaccomodating and often would not be able to make any decisions and would make me do the legwork to communicate between their Sales and Catering offices. No one seemed to want to do their job. But I do have to say the location is AMAZING and the beach in the back on the marina side is beautiful for an outdoor ceremony. We had our cocktail hour on the patio which was awesome too - and our dinner inside in their circular dining room (very unique)! The food was also so great - so like I said, I regrettably have to write a negative review because other brides might be surprised by the staff....

Our contact Sheila Brown was very helpful and professional. We booked the reception site about a year in advance and I believe they required a 2000 deposit which went towards the final bill and required a 13,500 minimum spending limit. We were originally going to try the Admiral Kidd Club, but it was booked. We were not disappointed with the Kona Kai at all. It has a very lovely location on the Shelter Island strip. We got some amazing pictures right across the street with the sunset and downtown San Diego in the background. For our food choices we went with the NY Strip and the Gorgonzola Chicken. I personally liked the Chicken better than the steak, but both were good during the tasting and also when served for our wedding. We had about 250+ to show and you would think it wouldn't taste the same when they're making that many dinners, but it was just as good. They provided us with complimentary champagne, robes, gigantic chocolate covered strawberries and a nice room. The staff the day of was especially helpful in taking care of little things for us...and lets not forget the bartenders who were very generous with their portions. Though Sheila didn't budge too much on some ideas or suggestions, she always had something helpful to add or another idea for how to do something that was just as good. All in All, for a gorgeous location, 250+ guest and a total bill under 18K, we can't complain. We would highly recommend the Kona Kai Resort as a good reception location as well as Sheila Brown for her services.

The folks at Kona Kai provided an elegant setting with good food. Very nice! The service at the reception and overall (planning, etc) was excellent.

It is the only place in San Diego with a private beach to get married on, but they cram 3 weddings in per night during the "wedding season" so it was very crazy getting set up day-of and the staff was not informed of all the details.
