About Laurel Thomsen Violin & Viola Performance
Laurel Thomsen, violinist/violist, provides sweet and soulful music for various private and public events and venues, including weddings, receptions, galleries, parties, restaurants, and house concerts. Since 1998 Laurel has played for hundreds of
weddings along the California Central Coast and California Bay Area.
Laurel offers wedding and event music as a solo violinist, or with a group featuring various instrumentation, including string duos, trios, quartets, violin/flute duos, and/or with vocals. Laurel's repertoire includes all the classical favorites as well as music from other genres, including Celtic/Irish, folk, ragtime, cabaret, latin, and pop favorites. Laurel will arrange a selection of music for your event, while working with your requests and preferences.

Additional Advice
Ceremony Music:
It is customary at weddings for the music to begin 15-30 minutes before the ceremony starts to help set the mood for arriving guests. The length of the prelude music needed roughly depends upon how many guests are attending. The musician(s) will arrive 15-20 minutes before the prelude is scheduled to begin.
The minimum performance time that may be booked is one hour. An hour to an hour and a half is recommended for most wedding ceremonies. For ceremonies such as an Episcopalian Wedding or a Catholic Wedding Mass, 1.5 hours is usually the minimum requirement. Once the minimum time requirement has been met, additional time is contracted in hour, half-hour, or 15 minute increments.
After the recessional, the musician(s) usually play(s) a short postlude to provide a smooth transition into the reception.
Because of my experience playing for different types of wedding ceremonies, I do not find it necessary to attend wedding rehearsals. Phone or e-mail contact with the bride/groom beforehand and a short conversation with the wedding coordinator on the day of the event provides all the information typically needed. If, however, the client especially wants the musician(s) at the rehearsal, one or all of the musicians can be hired to attend.
Outdoor Weddings:
Please be aware of that their are special considerations when planning outdoor events with stringed instruments.
Stringed instruments are very sensitive and may be ruined if exposed to extreme weather conditions; this includes precipitation, high winds, hot sun, or cold temperatures. If an alternate location is not available, I reserve the right to cancel services in the event of inclement weather. For events in the sun, the musician(s) require(s) shade (canopy, umbrella, tree, etc.) to protect the instruments.
Choosing Music:
If the client(s) wish to make their own music selections, the repertoire page on my website lists most popular classical wedding/event music.
For weddings, there are no set rules for the selection of music. In recent years the familiar “Bridal Chorus” and “Wedding March” seem to have become the exception rather than the rule. Separate pieces may be chosen for the seating of the mothers, the bridal party processional, and the entrance of the bride. Another option is to have one piece played during all three events, or to have one piece for all the attendants and a separate piece for the bride. A special moment during the ceremony (moment of prayer, lighting of a unity candle, sand ceremony, wine or tea ceremony, communion and/or signing of the marriage license) may be accompanied by special music. Additionally, specific pieces may be requested for the recessional (exit of the bride and groom) and prelude/postlude.
