As soon as I heard Lindsay's music on her website, I knew she would be perfect for our outdoor ceremony. She was warm and responsive from the very first email, and she was willing and able to play everything we requested. She played a mix of folk/Irish songs as guests arrived, and then more contemporary songs for our ceremony processional and recessional. Her music was absolutely beautiful and hearing her play as I prepared to walk down the aisle really made the emotion of the day hit me, and I got completely swept up in the moment. I honestly don't think that would have happened without Lindsay's live music, so I could not be happier with our decision to hire her!

We love Lindsay! We found her here on weddingwire, and had a chance to see her perform at a local Irish bar. She has a lovely voice and presence, and of course, is really talented!!!!

She was incredibly easy to work with, and affordable. She had some great song suggestions, and even learned some new songs for us. Our day-of-coordinator said she was very easy to work with too. Throughout the entire process, Lindsay was very responsive and professional, so we knew we were in good hands.

Thank you Lindsay for making our day so...

Future brides, I highly recommend the Ivy Leaf to play at your ceremony and confidently recommend them for other types of special events as well. They played during my wedding ceremony earlier this month in a Catholic church and the music was absolutely perfect -- very heartfelt and beautiful, it was just what I was hoping for. In addition, I found Lindsay, the point of contact for the band, very easy to work with and friendly, which is invaluable in the midst of wedding planning mayhem. She helped me find the best two songs for the procession and seemed as enthusiastic as I was for the Big Day! Thank you, Ivy Leaf, you played a very special role on a very special day.- Erin

Lindsay is an absolute sweetheart! I was working with a bride back in May 2010 who had a very tight budget and finding someone to play at a wedding ceremony for 1/2 an hour without breaking the bank was hard. I researched and found Lindsay who responded instantly to my emails. She's professional, punctual, really flexible and played great music for the ceremony. I highly recommend Lindsay for your events!

Lindsay was a fantastic musician for our wedding ceremony. It was so easy to work with her. We mentioned when we wanted her to play during the ceremony, and she picked out appropriate and beautiful music for all of it. We really liked her style of music, and she went above-and-beyond to make sure our ceremony went well. In particular, we had a vocal solo performed during the ceremony, and Lindsay offered to arrange the accompaniment for guitar herself – which turned out wonderfully. She also coördinated a rehearsal with the soloist prior to the ceremony. We recommend her wholeheartedly.

We chose Lindsay to play at are ceremony because of all the great reviews and also because of her amazing talent. After listening to some of her music online, we knew she would be perfect. Lindsay was affordable and willing it learn a couple of songs for our ceremony. We even took a drive one day to hear her play at a festival. When we introduced ourselves to her, she was kind of shy (maybe?) and wasn't too interested in the fact tha we drove an hour to hear her play. We just assumed she was busy and that was fine. Emailing with her at first was great- she would respond right away and offer suggestions. As it got closer to the wedding, and we needed to really have a plan in place for the ceremony, it took a while to get responses from her. She was really busy with other things. This made it thought for us to really know exactly what to expect for the ceremony, but we knew she would pull it off. Lindsay had learned the songs we wanted to include, and we appreciated that. The guests said that Lindsay and Armand played beautifully before the ceremony began. When my dad and I walked down the aisle, I guess Lindsay missed the queue and could not see, so we began walking to no music, which was strange. After the ceremony, my fiancé went over to talk to her and she wasn't very friendly. She asked how we were going to pay. Then I went over and right away it was about the money. We had her payment and tip right then and there to give to her. Armand was so nice and sweet! My fiancé and I think maybe Lindsay was shy, but nevertheless, it felt as though she wasn't very warm and easy to talk to. With that said, the songs she played we're played well and we were happy. It was cool that she learned a couple songs for us, too!

Vendor response to review

Thank you for this honest feedback. I am really sorry for the missed bridal march cue. When we arrived, there was no one there to tell us where to set up, so we decided on the place up front that seemed the most logical. Unfortunately, it was also where the groomsmen lined up during the processional, and they ended up blocking our line of sight. We kept looking to the officiant to give us a nod but it was really unclear. This is something I'm going to try to make sure doesn't happen in the future, because it's such an important moment and I'm so disappointed that it didn't work out better. I would ask future brides, if you can't see us, don't start walking until you hear the music.

As for the issues of responsiveness, we were tackling a lot of the decisions with the music during the month of March, which is when I was also very busy with St. Patrick's Day events and my band's CD release. I apologize for my slow responses during that time. I'm always trying to improve my systems for dealing with emails and all the different gigs I'm juggling, and that was an unusually busy time for me.

As for the issue of requesting money, I don't expect that paying us is the first thing on anyone's mind, and if my memory serves me correctly, the reason I asked the bride after asking the groom was because he had indicated that she would know. Everybody seemed quite busy and I wanted to get it out of the way. I do also recall talking with the bride and her father afterwards about what a great setting it was and about the music, and so I'm a little disappointed that all that was remembered was me asking for money. As a result, I've been asking other clients before the wedding who I should expect payment from, and I would suggest that a groomsman or parent be given this duty so that the couple has less to worry about.

I appreciate honest feedback like this; it reminds me what I need to work on still, and how I can get better at dealing with clients. To potential brides and grooms - while these mistakes have not been my norm, I'll be extra conscious and hardworking to ensure they aren't repeated.

A great guitarist and bouzouki player! A very dedicated and thoughtful musician.

About Lindsay Straw: Celtic, Folk & Classical Guitarist

As of February 2012, due to an increasingly busy schedule with my Irish & folk projects, I can no longer take pop, soft-rock or classical requests from new inquiries, though I can still consider requests for Irish, Scottish and folk pieces I don’t currently play for no additional charge.  When contacting me, please let me know what potential musical selections you might have (they can be changed later) and remember that my background is primarily folk and traditional Irish music.  I do not play jazz, R&B or most pop and cannot accommodate any requests in those genres.

FAQ for Lindsay Straw: Celtic, Folk & Classical Guitarist

What ceremony music arrangements can you provide?
Instrumental - Duo, Instrumental - Solo, Instrumental - Trio, Soloist / Vocalist
What instruments does your group play?
Guitar
What is your usual attire?
Black or navy blue dress or slacks and button-down shirt, with black, heeled shoes.
Do you offer live sample performances or CDs?
Absolutely! We can arrange a time for me to come by and play for you, and I frequently play gigs where there is no cover charge, so you could stop by and listen and chat. Check my schedule!
How much time do you usually need for setup?
At least 30 minutes, though I like to have an hour to get set-up, warm-up and be ready without rushing.
How much space do you usually require?
At least 5 feet by 5 feet if I'm using sound equipment, less if I'm not.
Do you charge for travel expenses? If yes, how much do you charge?
Generally I factor travel expenses into my total performance fee, but for locations that take longer than 2 hours to drive to, I will charge an additional $25-50 to cover the gas expense (luckily my car is very fuel efficient!).
Additional Advice
Q: Do you generally set up a contract with clients?

A: Yes. It’s optional, but with events that are far off in the future, that require travel or a fair amount of prep time (such as weddings), I myself prefer to have the peace of mind and assurance of an official contract. I have a contract that I use for most events that I can send to you for review and can be altered to your preference.

Q: Do you require a deposit?

A: For weddings and for events far in advance, requiring travel or a lot of preparation, I ask a 50% deposit to confirm the booking, due along with the signed contract at least two weeks before the event date.

Q: What is the booking process?

A: Once you’ve decided to hire me, we’ve established the basics, discussed your musical desires, and we’ve agreed on the fee, I email you a sample contract to review. Once we’ve agreed on that, I mail you two signed, completed copies of the contract with a self-addressed, stamped envelope. You then sign both copies and send one back to me. I ask that you pay a deposit (50% of the total fee) a minimum of two weeks before the event to confirm the date. You can send the deposit with the contract, or I can send you a reminder a month before the event. There’s no rush to get your musical choices made before the booking is completed. I will work with you up until the day of, though preferably your choices will be made at least a couple of weeks before the date! The balance must be paid the day of your wedding or sooner.

Q: Do you take requests?

A: Sometimes. Due to an increasingly busy schedule with my band and other Irish and folk music projects, as of February 2012, I can no longer take new soft-rock, pop or classical requests. I will still consider new requests for Irish, Scottish or folk songs - simpler pieces can be learned for free, complex ones for a nominal fee.

When first contacting me with an inquiry, I’d greatly appreciate knowing any special requests you might have upfront so I can give you a more accurate quote.

Q: Do you meet with clients in person before confirming the booking?

A: If a client would like to meet beforehand, fantastic! It’s easier to discuss musical preferences and choices in person, and we can take care of contracts and deposits at that time as well. However, everything can be done via email or phone, as well.

Q: Do you have your own sound equipment?

A: I have everything I need for small to medium gigs and weddings. I have a PA system, mics and stands as well as a guitar amplifier.

Q: Can I hire just two or three members of the Irish quartet, The Ivy Leaf?

A: Yes, of course. Just tell me what instrumentation you prefer.

Q: What would happen if you had to cancel?

A: If I needed to cancel, I would let you know as soon as possible and do everything I could to find you a replacement if you so desired. If you’ve already paid a deposit, I would completely refund the money ASAP.

Q: What would happen if we the clients needed to cancel?

A: If you wish to cancel, just let me know as soon as possible. Deposits that have been paid are non-refundable.

Q: What do you typically wear to a ceremony?

A: I like to go with a simple black or navy blue dress or black pants with a button-down shirt with heels. If you have any preferences or concerns, just let me know!

Q: Do you sing at weddings?

A: If requested, yes. Click here for a more or less complete list of songs that I perform. Many of these or similar songs can be performed either instrumental or with vocals.

Q: Do you charge extra for overtime or late starts?

A: As long as any late starts and endings are within 30 minutes of the previously agreed upon time, I don’t charge extra. If the delay is more than 30 minutes and you would like me to play for the full time slot, then I ask that you pay me accordingly (pro-rated based on the hourly fee we’ve agreed on). If the schedule has changed prior to the date of the event, just let me know in advance. Most of the time I keep my schedule before and after a gig pretty clear so any changes in start and end time are no problem.

Q: What do you usually play for ceremonies? What about before as guests are getting seated? Or for cocktail hours?

A: Basically whatever I play that you like! I’ve done a lot of ceremonies where the couple wanted the standard classical pieces for the processional, bridal march and recessional. But you can also go with something a little different, perhaps a couple Irish or Scottish pieces or instrumental versions of folk or popular songs. Combinations of the different styles are nice as well. I play your chosen music during the ceremony (typically three or four different pieces). During the seating period and as guests are exiting, I play songs and pieces in the same genre(s) as your selections. You can also make requests for the cocktail hour.

An example of a standard, classical programme might be:

Processional: Air On The G String (Bach) or Prelude In C Major (Bach)

Bridal March: Canon In D (Pachelbel)

Recessional: Jesu, Joy Of Man’s Desiring

Prelude music: any of the above not chosen for the ceremony, Sheep May Safely Graze (Bach), I Saw Three Ships (Traditional), Planxty Irwin (O’Carolan), Sheebeg and Sheemore (O’Carolan), The South Wind (Traditional), etc.

An example of an Irish/Celtic programme might include:

Processional: Twisting Of The Rope (Traditional) or Laureen’s Tune (Shooglenifty) or The South Wind (Trad.)

Bridal March: The Eagle’s Whistle (Trad.) or I Saw Three Ships (Trad.) or Merrily Kissed The Quaker’s Wife (Trad.)

Recessional: Fisherman’s Lilt (Trad.) or Inion Ni Scannlain (Lunasa)

Prelude music: any of the above not chosen for the ceremony, plus any previously listed traditional pieces or those written by O’Carolan, etc.
