MAKEUP ARTIST ON THE GO
Working with Kirsten was amazing! She was quick and efficient and made my ladies and I look great!! I will definitely use her services again for future events.
I hired Kirsten to do my wedding makeup, along with my 4 bridesmaids and my mother-in-law. Everyone loved their makeup and we all looked gorgeous. She is also a very likable person and had us all in love with her by the end. I can't say enough about how great she was....I'd recommend her to anyone!
I am so happy that I choose Makeup Artist on the Go for my wedding. I have never had such a positive experience from a Makeup artist before. Kirsten was friendly and professional. We did a trial run that was fabulous and the wedding was perfect, I looked great and received tons of compliments. I will definitely be recommending her to all my friends.
Long, detailed review. There was one more instance that kind of stuck out when dealing with her over the phone before we met, but I think this review is long enough! I want to explain how things happened the Big Day!
My wedding planner found Kirsten online. We were pleased with her reviews, photo gallery on her site & her price. She was very kind to speak with over the phone & after speaking with Kirsten, I called by wedding planner who became concerned because SHE had spoken with Kirsten & Kirsten told her my makeup & hair would take 45-60 minutes, whlie Kirsten told ME it would be about 25 min. saying they would do my hair & makeup at the same time. From there Kirsten changed her "timeframe" to do my makeup a couple more times and said both that they WOULD or WOULDN'T do hair + makeup at the same time, which made me a bit unhesitant to use her because she couldn't give one straight answer. But since she was more affordable, we gave it a shot.
The CONTRACT had said our appointment time was 9am on my Wedding Day, her hair girl Christina was 15 early & was GREAT. Kirsten told me the night before the wedding that she wouldn't need that much time anyway & should be there between 9:30-9:45am. She did arrive in the parking lot at exactly 9:45am. When she got there she set up really quickly and wanted to do my makeup first [even though we had agreed beforehand that I wanted to be last, it was a hot day & I wanted my makeup to feel as fresh as possible]. Anyway, I believe she wanted to do me first instead of as agreed because she was concerned she didn't have enough time? I don't know. Anyway, I showed her a picture of what I wanted for my eye makeup & she told me she didn't think it'd look good but I insisted so she said she'd modify it a little bit so it'd look better...
She did a good job with the makeup. Except it wasn't what I asked for, I asked for a golden/nutmeg smoky look and she used gray/silver or white-ish tones instead. I told her over the phone that I wanted thick eyelashes & even sent her a picture of a pair & told her I wanted THICKER ones & she brought ones less thick/dense than the one I sent her a photo of. No big deal, I brought my own pair. These were the thickest eyelashes & I didn't know this, but she cut it in half & applied it... She wouldn't let me look in the mirror until she was finished [to surprise me I think?] & when I looked, I was a bit surprised, it felt like a lot of eyeshadow & I know makeup looks less obvious in pictures so I asked my photographer to take a photo. I was happy with the way it looked on camera, but something looked odd with my eyelashes. I wear false eyelashes everyday, & I noticed it looked odd. I went to the bathroom mirror & it didn't look like the lashes I brought for her to use. I came back & asked her & she said she did use the ones I brought. THEN I realized she had cut them too much & that's why I didn't recognize them.
My photographer took a photo from an angle looking down on my while my eyes were closed- you could see where the LONG & super THICK eyelashes all of a sudden start in the MIDDLE of my eye! It looked really bad & even my photographer had that look on her face agreeing with me. I told her I wanted the eyelashes put on without being cut & she kept saying, "It's NOT going to look good, Trust Me." And I tried to tell her that I have WORN those false lashes before AND took pictures in them & they looked good uncut. Anyway, thank God I brought 2 pairs of that same false eyelash and asked her to fix it without cutting it off. She seemed pretty upset with me that I wasn't happy. I wasn't rude or mean about it, only concerned. I mean hello, it was my wedding day!!! I even asked my bridesmaids and photographer if I was being a "bridezilla" or anything because I wanted to make sure I wasn't. She was doing my MOH's makeup & she said she could put on the uncut eyelashes when she finished my MOH, then she said I should just do it myself. So I did. That frustrated me, because I hired her so I wouldn't have to do my own makeup & there I was applying my own false eyelashes...
To top it off, when she asked for the payment before leaving, she suddenly told me I owed her another $40 for a "Traveling Fee". She came from San Diego to Oceanside. We originally agreed & on the CONTRACT that there was no traveling fee if at least 3 girls [including myself] had hair OR makeup done [meaning at least 3 services hair or makeup aside from mine]. We ended up having 4 of us get hair AND makeup done which was 6 services aside from mine]. The NIGHT before the wedding, she even emailed & texted me my TOTAL amount of money we owed her and her hair dresser. There was NOTHING about some traveling fee. I still have the text from her & I think the email, definitely our contract agreement. I think she just said that I had to pay a traveling fee suddenly because she was upset after I didn't like what she did with my makeup? I guess* she MAY have gotten mixed up just like she kept mixing up telling my wedding planner a different number for how long it'd take for makeup/hair to get done?? When I told her that it wasn't even in the contract & she had said there was no traveling fee if I got 3 services outside of my own, she just said it wasn't in the contract "but we talked about it". A flat out lie. Or she really was mixed up. Either way, it was a horrible & unprofessional mistake. WHY would a PROFESSIONAL NOT put a fee on THEIR CONTRACT? Isn't that what it's for? To protect the vendor and the client???? I guess I wasn't "safe" then...? Being accused & embarrassed in front of my family. bridesmaids, & her hairdresser.
Her demeanor was very intense & it did NOT make me feel comfortable. She made me feel BAD in front of her hair dresser because Kirsten made it look like I just wasn't paying!!! I should have brought my contract. Anyway, I apologized & offered to pay her through Paypal later since I didn't have the unexpected new $40 travel fee she dumped on me. [I didn't think of saying at the time until after my wedding that Kirsten had sent me the total amount due the night before & the travel fee wasn't on it] Then she said in a very rude way, "Well you can just give a tip instead." I DID plan for a tip so I had more than $40 I gave both of them for tip. If I could go back, I would not have tipped Kirsten for MY makeup, I'd have tipped her for my bridesmaids' only & I would have given the rest of it all to her hairdresser Christina.
I think that Kirsten does a good job doing makeup. My bridesmaids looked great. But for how long she has been in business, I expected TACT & PROFESSIONALISM which she is lacking extremely in when things don't go her way. That was the most disappointing of all. She did not handle things professionally or politely. I later found out from my MOH that Kirsten was going on TALKING about me to my MOH while she was fixing my MOH's makeup & I was getting my hair done in the other room. I think that is rude =( And on my WEDDING DAY! =( I'm not here to talk badly about Kirsten, I would just hate for another bride or lady paying someone hard earned money & not even getting what they ask for, or professionalism. I'm not saying you will have just as bad of an experience as I had with Kirsten, it seems that most people don't. But I figured I should put a review on this so brides are informed! This is the biggest day of your life! Hiring the right Professionals can make or break your day. Please choose wisely, and especially if you get stressed out, anxious or nervous easily which you more likely will on your Big day!!
I do have to say the value could be higher because she did a great job on my bridesmaids. But it asks if you got what you paid for, & I paid for a professional makeup artist who claims to be...
[Taken from her website "About Me":
"I'm not a stuck up makeup artist and that is VERY important to me. I'm easy to get along with and my clients and models say that I make them feel comfortable and relaxed and that is key!"
The content of that statement about herself WAS my first impression of Kirsten, until you say one thing she doesn't agree with or like. After she found out I wanted my false eyelashes redone, she had a different attitude... She DID NOT make me feel comfortable or relaxed. If that was "key" then she must have left her key in the car that day unfortunately =( I think it'd be worth it to hire Kirsten for everyone at the wedding BUT the Bride.
I'm sorry to give you a negative review Kirsten. I just wanted to share my experience with other brides. I hope you can better your business from it & I honestly wish you all the best.
Kirsten was amazing. Dont let her very laid back cool attitude make you feel insecure. At first I was a little hesitant about her but she totally came through and made me and my girls make up look amazing. She was all about making my day perfect and all about me!!! Sweet as ever. I totally recommend her!!!
