Reviews for Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa

Ceremony:
Our ceremony took place outside and its absolutely beautiful. The cascading stairs that serve as the aisle down to the lower terrace where the ceremony takes places is priceless. The pacific ocean is the backdrop that our guests faced and it was breathtaking. Unfortunately it was slightly overcast the day of the wedding but we were happy and the photographer was ecstatic as it makes for much better pictures. The terrace is connected to the bar in the hotel which is the only slight drawback but we didn't even notice. For weddings a white lattice partition is put up between the bar patio and the area of the terrace where the ceremony is taking place. It was perfect and I couldn't have asked for anything else. After the ceremony our cocktail hour took place on the same terrace. The chairs were folded up in less that 30 seconds and the place was transformed completel with hors d'oeuvres tables, cocktail tables, heat lamps if its cold and a full bar. The staircase used for the aisle also was the location of our formal family pics which worked out really well. Our guests were able to enjoy the cocktail hour, less to our Mariacchis and watch the silly things our families were doing during picture time. If I had to do it all over again I would pick the exact same location and wouldn't change a thing.
Reception:
Working in the hotel industry myself I am very picky and have high expectations for good service. The plaza went above and beyond in every aspect. Nicole Rodriquez is the wedding coordinator and she is simply the most amazing person I have ever dealt with. From the moment I met her at the Plaza I knew I wanted to get married there. She was always so calming and covered every detail from A to Z. The staff was incredible and the food was out of this world. Many guests said it was 5 Star food that was just delicious! We had a room block that was easy to work with. We had a couple of hiccups in the beginning with room reservations but once I had one point of contact in reservations it was a piece of cake. Speaking of cake - the Plaza made our cake and it was not only delicious but beautiful. During the reception we had one server that was strictly dedicated to me and my groom. The banquet captain checked in with my Day of Coordinator throughout the night to make sure things were running smoothly. It was awesome. When we arrived back in our room at the end of the night we had an entire dinner waiting for us including both entrees, cake, champagne, the whole nine yards just in case we didn't have chance to taste everything earlier in the evening. It was spectacular. Every member of the banquet staff knew exactly what was going on and where everyone needed to be. We had a slide show that my brother had created and the AV person from the Plaza checked everything out the day before to ensure that the slideshow was smooth and there were no problems. The communication was amazing. If you can't tell I was absolutely speechless over this place. It was everything I could have ever dreamed of and then some. From the moment we checked into the hotel 2 days before the wedding we were treated like royalty that lasted until the moment we left for our honeymoon.

Monterey Plaza was the perfect place for our wedding. The wedding coordinator, Sarah Ward, is an absolute gem. They know how to treat a bride on the day of her wedding and make the day stress-free.

My wedding at the Monterey Plaza was everything I wanted it to be. Sarah Ward, the coordinator, was extremely helpful and responsive throughout the entire planning process, and she was particularly accommodating since I was planning my wedding from the east coast.
I had my ceremony on the lower deck, cocktail hour on the upper deck, and the reception in the Dolphins ballroom. With the ceremony on the lower deck, the bridal party all walk down the staircase during the processional, making for a really dramatic effect. We got tons of compliments on the beauty of the setting (and even the seals barking in the background!). I had been a little concerned about the proximity of the outdoor restaurant seating to the ceremony area, but they cabined off the restaurant with some white lattice stands and that worked perfectly. We also had my brother sing a song during the ceremony, and they were happy to setup a microphone and a stool for him to sit on off to the side of where the bridal party stood.
All in all, I would recommend the Plaza in a heartbeat.

The bride and bridesmaids stayed here the night before and all got pampered by the staff. They were relaxed and happy the day of the actual ceremony!

We want to give a shout-out to Alexis and the entire catering and bell staff of the Monterey Plaza Hotel. Alexis, the wedding planner, was available anytime we needed to speak to her or via email. The staff was very professional and responded to our every request with speed and creativity. The wedding ceremony went off without a hitch and it was beautiful. Everything about this hotel was five star.Scott & Regan Johnson

We just had our daughter's wedding at the Monterey Plaza Hotel, and it was gorgeous! Sunshine, blue water, sea otters and sailboats added to the atmosphere during the ceremony. The photos are stunning with the blue water and blue skies. Carly was wonderful and made sure everything went smoothly. We and our guests were treated like royalty - from the front desk staff right through the valet and bell captain! The waitstaff at the reception was great, the cake was beautiful, and the food delicious - it tasted like it was prepared for one order - not one of one hundred! Thank you to everyone who made the day so special!

It was so great having our ceremony right out over the Monterey Bay! The staff is so professional, and our reception was perfect. Everything worked out so well!

Very classy and very professional!!!!!! Having a destination wedding and not enough time to plan for it, the crew made our wedding a breeze.

We had our wedding ceremony and reception at the Monterey Plaza in July 2011. We planned this as a destination wedding from our home in Colorado. We wanted an oceanside wedding, and this is the perfect venue for it. We were able to have the ceremony on a terrace overlooking Monterey Bay. The background was amazing! Everything about the planning process was very smooth, and Alexis and Kui in the events/catering department were so helpful. Our wedding was perfect and everything was taken care with the most amazing service. Also, the food and cake were delicious. We got many compliments on everything from our guests. Staying at the Plaza was a treat as well; their oceanfront rooms are beautiful. I highly recommend looking into the Monterey Plaza as an all-in-one wedding venue.

Our wedding was held here in August 2008. I can't say enough good things about the wedding staff and the Monterey Plaza. They were a pleasure to work with from beginning to end. Sarah and Jamie were so helpful in planning everything down to the littlest details and I knew my wedding was in great hands. Our guests loved the food; from the cocktail hour to the dinner and wedding cake. The venue and location are unbeatable. Anyone who is looking for a gorgeous venue in Northern California should definitely check this place out.

The Monterey Plaza was a GREAT venue. We just had our ceremony and reception there this July. The weather was gorgeous, and everyone commented on how beautiful everything turned out.The only thing I would advise to someone planning their wedding here is to get ALL of your (verbal) agreements in writing, in order to minimize any later headaches or embarrassment in front of wedding guests. We had agreed with the hotel on a couple of things which did not pan out 100% because we could not show our agreements on paper. Overall I was very satisfied with the hotel and would (still) recommend this venue to anyone looking to host a classy, beautiful + 5-star level of service, wedding in the greater bay area.

What a great place, right on the water.

My friend was married here and her ceremony was beautiful! What a romantic and scenic place to get married - right by the shores of Monterey! This is also an ideal place for out-of-towners to stay since it's right by all the interesting tourist destinations.

I will admit that the location was beautiful. Everything was set up wonderfully and Alexis was very helpful throughout the planning process. However, there are some words of caution that I will throw out to other brides. If you book here, do not let your guests have the option of ordering fish. I did, and everyone who ordered fish got violently ill a few hours after the reception, including my husband. Mild food poisoning - completely embarassing and unexeptable. Our reception was hosted outside on the patio, hotel workers got lazy throughout the reception as random people began walking through it. If you are looking for privacy this is not the place. Random people stood on their balconies and in the resturant (lots of people) and took pictures of us throughout the whole ceremony/reception process.Other than those few things, as I said in the beginning, it was a beautiful location and the set up was perfect. I did have guests tell me that it was the most beautiful wedding they have been to.
Vendor response to review
Thank you for taking the time to share your wedding experience with other members here on Wedding Wire. It is through continuous feedback from our loyal guests that we are able to improve. Although I appreciate your gracious praise regarding our property and Catering Sales Manager, Alexis Davis, I was extremely disappointed and concerned that you and your guests became ill after dining with us. This is certainly not reflective of the quality of service and food we prepare here at the Plaza, especially for special events such as your wedding. I can reassure you the issues you encountered have been addressed with the Executive Chef for immediate review with our cooking staff. Also, please accept my sincere apologies for the inconvenience and unpleasantness you experienced from our staff. I have personally addressed our event staff regarding the issues surrounding unprofessionalism and poor service with corrective action. We pride ourselves on the premier service and accommodations that the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa is known for and when we fail to meet our guest’s expectations, we do not take these matters lightly.I do hope you will allow us the opportunity to serve you once again, so that we may restore your confidence in us. In the meantime, thank you for your feedback as it truly helps us to improve.Best regards,John V. NarigiVice President / General ManagerMonterey Plaza Hotel & Spa

We started out with a different wedding planner provided by the Plaza. We had difficulties with communication between the Plaza and ourselves after the first planner left the Plaza(out of office replies, information not relayed in a timely manner, information not passed on to pastry chef, scheduling of appointments with both the wedding planner and pastry chef).
I have had the pleasure of working with the crew at the Plaza and they are great. The venue is beautiful and they work very hard to make sure your special day is all that you have dreamed of. I would suggest you be sure and take a look at this venue before making any decisions on where to have your wedding. Carly and Kui are great to work with and I know they love what they do and it shows.
Last weekend I provided the flowers for a fantastic wedding at the Monterey Plaza Hotel and I would like to compliment the hotel and its staff on a beautiful and professional job. They made my job as a florist very easy and the couple getting married didn't have a single thing to worry about--the day went perfectly. The Monterey Plaza is also a beautiful location for a wedding. Definitely a place to check out when looking for a venue in which to get married.
If you are looking to have a romantic bayside event, MPH is the only place to go. Its sweeping views of Monterey Bay and world class amenities make MPH a must see for anyone planning a special event. The staff is professional and accommodating and the services are superb. I would recommend Monterey Plaza Hotel to anyone looking for a one stop, perfect event location.

What can you say about such a beautiful location and it's excellent staff? There is a special "magic" that comes with an event hosted at the Monterey Plaza Hotel and I know my Brides & Grooms will have only the best services and experiences when working with the hotel and it's exemplary staff - from the catering staff to the valet. Everything is top-notch and all of us at Every Last Detail Wedding & Event Coordination refer to the hotel as one of our favorites to work with. - Patty Speirs, Owner - Every Last Detail Wedding & Event Coordination
