We couldn't have asked for a better DJ! Peter Naughton was professional, organized and very accomodating which made it so easy for us (which was a relief having a million other things to plan) I wouldn't hesitate to recommend his services to anyone in need of entertainment for any occasion.

Peter was flexible and attentive to our needs. We basically hand selected almost every song for the wedding - some more obscure than others - and he found and played every one! Peter was also very professional, responding quickly to our emails and meeting with us in person to go over details as well. It is always nerve-racking deciding to work with vendors that you really know nothing about - but we absolutely made the right choice selecting Peter and would wholeheartedly recommend his services to other couples or people searching for a DJ for their event.

About Peter Naughton Productions

My name is Peter Naughton and I'd love to DJ your wedding reception.  By now, you've probably read plenty of articles giving advice about wedding planning... including the fact that the DJ can "make or break" your reception.

You can be confident your reception will be a great time with me as your DJ.  I've got several years of experience as a mobile DJ, and as an on-air personality for one of Central New York's top radio stations.  But you won't be overpaying for that experience -- having been married myself in 2011, I know how quickly wedding day expenses can add up.  That's why I keep my rates reasonable -- and I don't charge more for "peak season" or anything like that.

Check out the rest of my page here, and feel free to visit my full website at www.peterthedj.com for more details including my current pricing, specials and to contact me about availability for your date.  I book just ONE event per date, so make sure you book me before someone else does!

FAQ for Peter Naughton Productions

What music genres are in your collection?
50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, Acoustic, Big Band, Classic Rock, Classical, Country, Dance, Folk, Hip Hop, Jazz, Motown, Oldies, Orchestra, Pop, R&B, Rock, Soul, Swing
Do you have liability insurance?
Yes
Describe your DJ style:
My style can change according to each customer's needs. However, my "default" style is to provide a music-intensive presentation. Yes, I do usually double as the master of ceremonies -- announcing the wedding party upon their entrance, and making other announcements as needed. Beyond that, people are at your wedding to see YOU and to celebrate YOUR big day. Nobody likes a DJ that makes himself the center of attention by talking too much; beyond the required announcements, I keep the music rolling so your guests can keep partying!
Is there a limit to the amount of music that can be requested?
No, you can request as few or as many songs as you like. The only limit we have is time -- obviously, we can't play 4½ hours of requests if your reception is only four hours long.
What is your usual attire?
My usual wedding attire is suit pants, a dress shirt and tie. I also own a tuxedo jacket, pants and shoes: at customer's request, I can wear the tux if customer agrees to pay rental costs for shirt, vest and tie.
If you do not have one of the songs pre-requested by the client, do you require that they provide it?
This doesn't happen often, but when it does, I find the song and purchase my own copy. If it's an extremely rare song, I may need to borrow it from the client -- but that hasn't happened yet.
How many other DJs do you work with?
None. Every event booked by me is DJ'ed by me.
What is the minimum amount of time you will DJ for?
4 hours. If your reception is shorter, you can still book me, but the 4-hour rate is my minimum rate.
Is the client able to meet the DJ before booking?
Yes, definitely. My rates include up to two face-to-face meetings.

Wedding receptions require plenty of attention to detail. While some DJ's try to have couples fill out online questionnaires and forms, I feel it's more effective to have a face-to-face meeting where we can discuss your requests.

I've also worked with couples who are getting married in CNY, but doing all their planning from a distant location. In these cases, we can do some or all of the planning through email or phone calls, and we can try to meet when you arrive in CNY, if your schedule allows.
Can the client submit a do-not-play list?
Definitely! I think the "do not play" list is just as important as the "must have" list.
Do you bring your own equipment?
Yes.
What (if any) special equipment, such as disco balls or lighting, is offered with your service?
I have dance lighting.
How much time do you usually need to set up? Do you require that the site or client provide a table for you to set up on?
While I prefer to arrive 90 minutes early when possible, I know some venues (especially if there are back-to-back receptions) only allow one hour. My setup can be done in a little under an hour -- provided the venue is situated in a way that I can quickly move my equipment from my vehicle to your reception space. Long walks, stairs, elevators or other obstacles can make things a little more complicated.

Table can be done either way: I do have my own 4-foot table with a plain black tablecloth. However, most reception halls automatically provide a table for me, so that the DJ table can be clothed/skirted to match all the other tables in the room.
Do you have any extra space requirements?
My set-up is fairly compact. My table is 4-feet long, I have two speakers on tripods, and my lights share a third tripod. Each tripod's footprint is about 3x3-feet.
Do you have a sign or banner that you use at events?
No, I just bring business cards which will be available on my table. However, I am currently considering a small sign to place on the front side of my mixer console.
Do you usually emcee the event or talk between songs?
Yes, I usually emcee the event. I'll announce the wedding party as they make their grand entrances into the reception. I'll announce the "special dances" (like the newlyweds' first dance) and events like the cake cutting, bouquet toss, and so forth.

While I'll occasionally make other announcements as requested, I generally don't talk just for the sake of talking. As stated before, you and your guests are there to party and have fun, not to listen to the DJ "chit chat" after every song.
How would you motivate the crowd if no one is dancing?
There's a few different strategies, depending on the type of crowd. Sometimes it's just a matter of trying different kinds of songs to see what gets people out there.

Or I might say, "this next song is a really big favorite of {insert couple's names here} and they'd really love to have you join them on the dance floor."
What is your policy on taking breaks? If you require a meal break, do you require that the client provide your meal?
Breaks are taken only when absolutely necessary (read: when nature calls). My equipment allows me to "stack up" a few songs in advance, so the music will continue in my absence.

Clients customarily do provide a meal, but I can eat right at my DJ table. (Ask your venue or caterer if they offer "vendor meals," as this option will save you money.) I do not expect salads, apps or dessert. I do not drink alcohol while working; only water, soda or coffee.

Will you arrange for recorded music to play during your breaks?
Yes. As stated previously, my equipment allows me to "stack up" songs in advance, so the music will continue in my absence.
What is your backup plan in case you become unavailable on the day of the event?
I know several other DJ's whose experience is similar to mine. If an unexpected, unavoidable emergency prevents me from working, I will do everything I can to get one of these guys to take over. If that is not possible, I will refund all money paid to date, including deposit.
Do you book yourself for more than one event in a day?
No. When you book me, you're the only event for that date.

What is your overtime rate?
Overtime is $75 per half-hour if I am asked to continue playing beyond the contracted ending time. Overtime must be paid in full before it begins and is non-refundable, even if it ends before the half-hour.

You should be sure overtime is also OK with your venue -- they may have their own extra charges, or they may not allow overtime at all.
Do you charge for travel expenses? If yes, how much do you charge?
Travel time up to one-hour from my home in Syracuse is included at no charge. This includes most venues in or immediately around Utica. If it's only a few minutes over an hour, I usually don't care, but if it's significantly longer, there will be an extra charge. Any additional charges for travel would be provided up-front before any contract is signed.
What is the required deposit to secure your services?
25% of the total cost. There's no set "deadline" for a deposit to be paid unless another customer requests a quote for the same date. If that happens, you'll be notified via email.

If no deposit is received within 48 hours of that notice, the date will be offered to the other party and it then becomes a matter of who pays their deposit first.

Once a deposit is paid, anyone else who requests the same date will be turned away. As a result, deposits are non-refundable.
