About Pure Power Entertainment
Pure Power Entertainment
is a boutique DJ entertainment service that provides quality music at functions and special events. My mission is to help make your function a memorable one by
entertaining your guests through my music. I have been a DJ for over 25 years and have played at all types of functions. In addition, I am married (for 20 years now) and know how special a wedding day is to a bride and groom.
Therefore, I bring a certain attention and unique perspective to working your event. Based on my experience, I also add a very special touch and understanding that some DJ's and large companies may not be able to
provide.
FAQ for Pure Power Entertainment
What music genres are in your collection?
60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, Dance, Gospel, Hip Hop, Jazz, Motown, R&B, Soul
Do you have liability insurance?
Yes
Describe your DJ style:
I've been in the music business over 25 years and understand how people react to music. I play guitar and bass and have performed in front of audiences in many different venues. My style is very entertaining, upbeat and cheerful. I play music to motivate the crowd when needed, but know how and when to set the proper mood in the room.
Is there a limit to the amount of music that can be requested?
I will try to take requests but if I get bogged down with requests from guests every five minutes, the flow of the party will be disrupted. That is why I request from my clients a list of preferred songs so that they can be intergrated into the sets with minimal impact to the party flow.
What is your usual attire?
Formal events: Tuxedo (a designer one that I own), dark blue or black suit. Less formal events I will a polo shirt with my company logo.
If you do not have one of the songs pre-requested by the client, do you require that they provide it?
Usually no. But if they have it, I will request it. I will make an attempt to get it from my digital record pool or purchase it so that I have it for future engagements.
How many other DJs do you work with?
I work with another DJ. There are two DJ's in my network that I constantly work with.
What is the minimum amount of time you will DJ for?
My minimum amount of time is two (3) hours. It also depends on the size and type of event.
Is the client able to meet the DJ before booking?
I meet with all of my clients before I sign a contract. I make sure that I am the right DJ for them and their affair. After the contract is signed, we meet to go over logistics of the affair, visit the venue together (if necessary) and make contact to verify everthing is okay one week before the event.
Do you specialize in any ethnic or international events?
Most, if not all, of my clients are mature African-Americans. Many of my clients are over the age of 35 and love the kind of music I play for their crowd. This makes me more appealing to my clientele.
Can the client submit a do-not-play list?
Yes. I do not play records with curse words or gross profanity. In fact, I welcome clients who do not want certain records played.
Do you bring your own equipment?
Yes. I carefully load, set up and break down my own equipment and light show. My equipment travels with me.
What (if any) special equipment, such as disco balls or lighting, is offered with your service?
I have an intelligent lighting system that is sound activated. I have a Tri-Phase system and several color spot lights and strobe. I also have two led mood lights.
How much time do you usually need to set up? Do you require that the site or client provide a table for you to set up on?
Yes. I require the venue to provide a 6 foot table. It's in my contract. I bring my facade to place in front of the table with my company sign on the facade. I require at least one hour prior to the event to set up properly, I often arrive earlier just to be safe.
Do you have any extra space requirements?
None.
Do you have a sign or banner that you use at events?
Yes. My sign says Pure Power Entertainment with my phone number. It is professionally done.
Do you usually emcee the event or talk between songs?
I do emcee events. I have a great speaking voice so I am asked to emcee lots of events. I do not however talk in between songs. If I am playing a set, it is distracting and unprofessional. Guests also get annoyed when you are talking too much.
How would you motivate the crowd if no one is dancing?
First of all, if no one is dancing then you are playing the wrong song! People expect to dance at these events. They are just waiting for the right song and someone to break the ice. For example, if I was playing for a wedding and there were lots of women there, I would play all of the "lady songs." Example: Single Ladies by Beyonce, something by Rihanna or Alicia Keys. This will get them up and its my job to keep them up. Other functions I have come from behind my facade and gone out into the crowd to dance with the ladies to further motivate them.
What is your policy on taking breaks? If you require a meal break, do you require that the client provide your meal?
I do not eat at functions. Therefore, there is no expense to the client. I have nightclub experience and have played for 6 hours straight without a break. I can play for 4 hours without breaking a sweat or take a break.
Will you arrange for recorded music to play during your breaks?
No. If I have to take a bathroom break, it is under four minutes. I would cue up a song that was four minutes, plus the song after that and run to the bathroom. I would be back from the bathroom by then.
What is your backup plan in case you become unavailable on the day of the event?
I check and see if my partner is available on that day, just in case. I've never missed an event.
Do you book yourself for more than one event in a day?
No. One day - one booking.
What is your overtime rate?
$100 per hour payable in cash at the beginning of the overtime session.
Do you charge for travel expenses? If yes, how much do you charge?
I do not charge for travel expenses.
What is the required deposit to secure your services?
It depends. But I usually ask for a $200 deposit at the time of signing the contract. The rest payable at the affair. Sometimes depending on the person and the size of the gig, I allow them to have a payment plan to help them manage their cash flow.

The Mature DJ for the Mature Client
Selecting a DJ for your next function will be one of the most important decisions you make to insure the success of your event. Everything else can be perfect, but if the music isn’t good, your event may fizzle and your guests will always remember that the entertainment wasn’t that good.
Selecting a DJ that you like when you need one can be very difficult. Therefore, the best way to find a DJ is to hire one you’ve already seen and/or heard. If you attend a function where the DJ is good, get their business card right away. If fact, get a few. If you didn’t get their card, ask the host of the function for the DJ’s contact number.
If you haven’t seen a good DJ recently, ask your friends who have the same taste in music as you do. They probably have been to a function you missed or may know of a good DJ. If the first two don’t work, your job gets tougher. You may have to consult your local phone directory or research on-line.
Music can make or break an event. Therefore, invest in a good, professional DJ. When you are looking for a DJ, here are a few things you should consider:
Experience. Does the DJ have enough experience to handle my function? With experience comes confidence and knowledge that the DJ will do the right thing at your function. This is a very important factor to consider.
Equipment. Does the DJ use state-of the art equipment from a manufacturer disc jockeys and professionals use? There is a tremendous difference between home stereo equipment and professional duty sound equipment. The more professional the equipment the more reliable and better sounding it will be.
Music Selection. Does the DJ have the music knowledge and library to ensure variety in the music selection? Do they take requests? Do they know the right songs to play and when? Experienced DJ’s with many years of experience usually carry music that covers at least three to five decades to cater to diverse audiences.
Pricing. DJ pricing will vary. Some DJ’s with lots of experience and bookings will be more expensive. DJ’s with less experience may be less expensive. Prices can range from $500 to $1,500 for a four-hour booking. Some are even more expensive. Of course, price will be an important consideration. But remember, you do get what you pay for. So look at the DJ’s total package and offering. You will want to spend the money now and ensure that the DJ will be worth it in the end.
Although there are many more things involved in selecting a DJ, the perfect DJ for you will be experienced at your type of event, flexible and will work with you. As you search for the music provider for your next function, these few tips should help you get started. Remember, your objective is to find someone that will help you make your event fun and memorable.
