Doug Shaw is above and beyond most DJs. He was very curteous, knowledgeable, and very much the professional entertainment that makes an event AN EVENT. He really knows his music, and knows how to carry a party's momentum. He kept our reception on track, kept in communication with us (the bride and groom), as well as with other vendors to make sure everything went smoothly.

Doug was referred to us by our caterer (another great vendor!), and we are so lucky to have found such a great entertainer!

DJ Shaw did an absolutely amazing job at our wedding reception! The music was one of the things that I focused on the most during the wedding planning, because I wanted it to be just right so that both my older and younger guests would enjoy themselves. I gave DJ Shaw a list of all the songs in the order I wanted, and on the day of the wedding, he made sure to play each one, and was able to adjust the playlist to keep the dancefloor filled the whole night! All of my friends had a BLAST and danced the whole time! He took requests and even added a few great songs I had not thought of. He was very easy to work with, clearly has many years of experience, and helped us plan each part of our reception. He also did an excellent job keeping the reception moving and it flowed very well - I really liked how he was able to introduce each part of the reception (toasts, first dances, garter/bouquet toss, cake cut, etc), and talked just the right amount. He really knows what he is doing, and I would highly recommend him!

He was fantastic!!! He kept everything going smoothly and had a perfect timeline for our night.

He made house visits to go over things with us before the wedding and was so relaxed and professional.

Very knowledgeable about music for younger kids.

We were very impressed!

We were really grateful to have found Doug. He helped us with song selections and the cocktail hour and dinner music. The day of our wedding, Doug made sure we were taking care of completely. He was so attentive and put us at ease that we were thrilled! He kept the party going and the music playing. We had a video played before we entered the hall and without asking he helped set it up and hooked up his sound system. He made sure our day was special. He is a DJ at Jackson's (downtown Tampa) so we also got to listen to him as well. The only down side was we couldn't get a hold of him right away.

What music genres are in your collection?

Do you have liability insurance?

Yes

Describe your DJ style:

My DJ "style" is adaptable to my client's needs. I play all types of music. In addition to weddings and corporate events, I am also a nightclub DJ (currently working at Jackson's Bistro-Tampa)

Is there a limit to the amount of music that can be requested?

The only limits on the music are those that are established by the client. I encourage clients to make requests; as well as to fill out a "do not play" list.

What is your usual attire?

I always wear formal attire; unless told otherwise by my clients.

If you do not have one of the songs pre-requested by the client, do you require that they provide it?

I will try to buy a requested song if I don't have it. If the song is not available for sale, I will gladly play whatever the client brings to their event.

How many other DJs do you work with?

I am associated with 25 other DJ companies in the Tampa Bay area through my involvement with the American Disc Jockey Association. Extra help is available if needed for larger events.

What is the minimum amount of time you will DJ for?

A "normal" event is 4 hours or more. Packages are available for under 4 hours; but those are rare.

Is the client able to meet the DJ before booking?

I insist upon meeting with a potential client before I am hired if at all possible. It is a very important choice for a bride and groom; we need to meet to see if I am the right person for the job.

Do you specialize in any ethnic or international events?

Can the client submit a do-not-play list?

Always. Creating a do-not-play list is a part of my planning. If a client doesn't want to hear a song, I don't need to play it. There are thousands of other songs to play. It's always about the client.

Do you bring your own equipment?

Yes. What I bring depends on my client's needs.

What (if any) special equipment, such as disco balls or lighting, is offered with your service?

Small to large sound systems are available; as well as lighting, video screens, music videos, slide shows, live camera, uplighting...basically anything the client needs is available.

How much time do you usually need to set up? Do you require that the site or client provide a table for you to set up on?

Setup time depends upon the equipment needed for the event. Normal setup time is 1 hour and I am always ready to go at least 30 minutes prior to anyone entering the room. If the site doesn't have a table, I can bring one.

Do you have any extra space requirements?

Only for the larger video or lighting packages.

Do you have a sign or banner that you use at events?

No.

Do you usually emcee the event or talk between songs?

I do emcee the events that I work. The amount of talk is determined by "reading" the crowd or pre-determined by the client.

How would you motivate the crowd if no one is dancing?

There are a variety of ways to motivate a non-dancing crowd. The bottom line to all of them is interaction. If dancing is important to the client (it is), then I will do whatever will work; based upon my years of experience and "reading" the crowd.

What is your policy on taking breaks? If you require a meal break, do you require that the client provide your meal?

I do not take breaks other than an occasional bathroom break. If a meal is provided, I am always grateful... I just need to know in advance. If there is no meal, I will eat before the event.

Will you arrange for recorded music to play during your breaks?

Yes

What is your backup plan in case you become unavailable on the day of the event?

I am a part of the American Disc Jockey Association. We have a hotline setup so that if a DJ can't perform at an event, a suitable backup is quickly found.

Do you book yourself for more than one event in a day?

No. I believe in giving full attention to one client per day.

What is your overtime rate?

Overtime varies, but on average it is $100 - $150 per hour.

Do you charge for travel expenses? If yes, how much do you charge?

Travel expenses are determined by the event.

What is the required deposit to secure your services?

My usual deposit is $300.00.

Additional Advice

***Is the client guaranteed the DJ of their choice on the day of their event? Yes, if you hire me; you get me (in writing as a part of the contract).
***Will you provide references? References are happily provided; not just previous clients, but other event professionals as well.
***Is Shaw Sound Productions insured? Insurance is a part of any legitimate business. I have a 1 million dollar liability policy and I am happy to provide the proof for each event.
***Does Shaw Sound Productions use professional equipment? Yes, all of our equipment is professional quality. It helps to insure reliable service and a quality presentation.
***Does Shaw Sound Productions bring backup equipment to an event? Yes. Weddings are once in a lifetime events. A backup system can save the day if needed.

Always hire a full-time professional for your wedding. Meet with them before you hire them to make sure that whoever you choose will be a good fit for you and your fiance's personality. Check references. Talk to former clients as well as a other wedding professionals who have worked with the DJ you are considering. Don't base your decision strictly upon price. In the wedding industry you do get what you pay for. It would make no sense to save money on the DJ; but have everyone leave your reception early because the DJ you have hired can't keep a crowd dancing. Do your homework. Your choice of entertainment will have a great impact on your reception's success.
