Reviews for Thai Mai Photography

Let me just begin first by saying that i never...and i mean NEVER...write reviews about anything--not restaurants, not eBay transactions, nada. Maybe it's because I'm lazy, maybe it's because I don't have the time, but most likely because I don't think I've received a service that wowed me enough to actually praise it over the world wide web.
That is, not until my husband and I met Thai.
There aren't enough words to express our appreciation for Thai and all the amazing work he's done for our wedding. From our very first meeting with him, we knew he would be so easy to work with. He was funny, easygoing, and genuinely seemed to care about capturing all the wonderful moments from our engagement and wedding.
I'll start with our engagement shoot. We wanted to hit up two locations--the coastal trail by Land's End in San Francisco (where my husband proposed to me), and the UC Berkeley campus (where I went to school and where our relationship first began). During our engagement shoot, Thai was remarkably laid-back, gave us suggestions for what to do and how to pose (which was wonderful for us, because we had never done any sort of professional photo shoot prior to this), and put up with all the hiking and climbing on the trail. He was so flexible with all the challenges of doing this photo shoot with us! Not only did we make him hike this trail, but we also had him drive out to Berkeley afterward, where he still got some amazing shots for us! We were so happy with our engagement photos when they came out...we couldn't have imagined a better e-session experience.
And don't get me started on the actual wedding day! Thai and his assistant were very prompt, very professional, and got along wonderfully with our guests. We had family and friends come up to us after the wedding telling us how much they loved Thai, how kind and friendly he was with them, and how polite and respectful he was (which is a really big plus at a Chinese wedding)! I really want to highlight just how well he worked with our ridiculously large family: after the ceremony we had to take a combination of different photos with our immediate family, our parents, our siblings, and both sides of our extended family. Thai was really patient with everyone (just imagine what it must be like to get 30 Asians to pose for one photo), and really worked hard to make sure every family member was portrayed clearly in each shot.
Thai was also really attentive to us in capturing every single moment of our day. Because of the tight time constraints of our wedding, we couldn't give him a lot of time to take "getting ready" pics or detail shots, or even just portrait photos of us and the bridal party, but he was SO flexible with that and worked around our schedule for the day to get the shots that we wanted! After the wedding we had time to take some portrait shots and photos with the wedding party, and even though i knew everyone was exhausted, Thai was still really energetic and kept on going to get as many shots of us as possible.
All in all, I'd have to say that Thai is, hands down, one of the best photographers I have ever worked with. I've been in a bunch of weddings and have seen quite a few photographers at work, but none as friendly, easygoing, and talented as Thai. We haven't gotten our wedding photos from him yet (our wedding was only a couple weeks ago), but we know that they will look amazing! If you're a bride and you're looking for an organized, professional, and flexible wedding photographer who will get along great with your guests, Thai is definitely your guy.

Thai Mai, I can't express how greatful I was to have him and his wife present at our wedding in TEXAS! He was a pleasure to work with. We flew to SJ for our E-Session and the following year we flew him and his wife to Houston for our wedding day. Our pictures turned out magnificent and breath taking Giao did my hair and make up and it was flawless. Everyone loved it and we got so much comments on them. I knew from the start when I saw his work on someone else's profile that I had to book him, and sure enough I did without hesitating and when we saw the results we were more than pleased. Worth the price and quality with a great personality! Thanks Thai and Giao for making our day memorable and special! Julie-Phong NguyenHouston, TX

We flew out to San Jose to meet up with Thai and his wife Giao, and they are wonderful peoples to work with. Thai was very detailed with his work from my observations. Even though it was super cold that week that we visited and the weather was super ugly too. We didnt get to do our photoshoot on the day planned until that following Monday.. the most perfect day out of our whole trip. Hopefully the pictures turn out great.. Still in pending on the photos..
OK today is 1/6/10, and I wrote the last post yesterday, and last night after emailing Thai to see if I could get some sneek peek of our e-session photos, I finally saw them and I love every single one of them. Their great, from his work to his details. I knew it from the start when I kept telling my FI about him and how I was so drawn to his style of creativity, and by all means he has met to my expectations. No questions asked, he is a true work of art! Thanks Thai for your time, rain or cold.. Mother Nature decided to give us one day to make all the magic happen and we did well especially you did Thai! We'll see you soon in March again and indeed I can't wait to see the rest of the photos!

I heard about Thai from previous clients. Thai has a genuine passion in what he does and captures "moments" from couples in photos that you didn't think was possible. A simple kiss on the nose can make a Bride-to-be tear, a whisper in someone's ear can make them smile so big, and the way couples look at one another, you can see their love instantly in Thai's pictures! After seeing his work and hearing so much about him, we decided to schedule an E-session with Thai immediately!
My fiance Neil & I have never taken "professional" pictures together. Our attitudes after meeting Thai & Giao, can we take more? Thai calls our E-session the "Marathon" session, really! His partner in crime Giao, did my makeup/hair and worked her magic, I was speechless.
We headed out to explore San Francisco and this duo was a blast to work with! Thai and Giao made Neil and I feel comfortable in front of the camera, made us laugh, and at times teased Neil b/c he showed more affection when the camera was off!
PS: Thank You to Giao (Like Yao Ming) b/c she was up since 5:00 AM and worked with us until 11:00 PM that day! =p You rock!
I look forward to working with both Thai & Giao on our special day!
Update: 1/20/2010
I really wanted Thai to be a part of our "Dream Team!" My Photographer had a clause where I could not hire any additional photographers. Since I was looking for a non-traditional PBooth, Thai was the perfect person! He just launched a new PBooth where guests can snap their own pictures and see them instantly on a monitor. I loved it because you could fit up to 18 people in one "shot." I look forward to making a coffee table photo book of all the PBooth pictures!
Thai exudes an energetic quality that any client wold want in their vendor! He had so many creative poses in mind for our guests and most of them executed them quite well! The props were a hit and Thai made sure all of our guests had them on. My Grandmother even put some props on!
Please book Thai now for a session because he is creative, outgoing, and his work is just, AMAZING! If you do book him, look into his PBooth too, you won't regret it!
Here is the link to our PBooth!

One of the biggest decisions during the wedding planning process is choosing a photographer. Don’t forget these are pictures that are going to last forever! After all the planning and money spent on one day, you want to make sure the photos reflect what’s important. Not just pictures and moments, but also the emotion behind them. We couldn’t have made a better decision than picking Thai Mai as our photographer for our November 2009 wedding.
Upon our initial meeting, Thai had a professional and friendly attitude. He also had great pictures. He has an eye for capturing a couple in their truest form. He hadn’t done that many weddings when we met with him but he was quickly filling up his schedule. He was the photographer for a friend’s wedding and when we saw her pictures, it sealed the deal. We booked him and Giao (his wife and 2nd photographer) and knew that we were going to have good pictures. We met once before the wedding just to talk about what we envisioned for our pictures, what was important for us and any special shots that we wanted to make sure he captured.
The day of the wedding, Thai was on time and unobtrusive and got some of fantastic shots. Though our ceremony location had some limitations on where he could shoot from, he had no issues and just worked around it. During our portraits, he would listen to us, make us laugh and really put us at ease. The hubby and I are hams and Thai just clicked away even when we were being dorky. Those dorky moments are some of our favorite shots! He really captured ‘us.’ At the reception, we hardly noticed he was there. He just blended in with the guests and was able to get great moments filled with emotion. We’ve gotten great comments about how easy he was to work with and how great he and Giao vibed with everyone. He didn’t have any issues capturing a fun Latin fiesta! We not only got good pictures, we got GREAT pictures! When we saw the teasers, I got teary eyed. When we saw the slideshow, I cried. When we got all the proofs back, forget it, waterworks galore! We could not be happier with the results. We laughed, we cried, we were shocked at how much he captured and we were thrilled with his work. I would highly recommend Thai and Giao to anyone looking for a photographer. I’m already looking forward to him capturing more moments as our lives progress.

L-o-v-E as in "I love our E-Session" photos.
Like the rest of the reviews we were delighted with the results from our session. This very talented husband and wife team was a pleasure to work with. From the beginning, Thai's easy going personality made us feel at ease and throughout our session we felt like we were with good friends; Giao took every care to make sure my makeup/hair was always 'camera' ready while Thai never tired of looking for great photo ops. Thai's positive energy and passion is sincere as his talent. My fiance and I feel extremely lucky that we got to work with both Thai and Giao. It didn't take much convincing for my FI (see, i'm catching on to this PW lingo) to agree that we're coming back for more ...perhaps with an "anniversary" session ...or maybe a 'boudoir' session...
Many thanks,
Nathalie

I had my e-session this past Sunday on 7/20/09 and was very very satisfied! I traveled all the way from Austin, TX to have my photos taken by Thai Mai. Thai is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! I cannot tell you enough how great he was to work with! Actually, he and Giao did all the work and I did nothing, lol!
I originally contacted Thai back in January 2009 to inquire about services for my September 2009 wedding. I had seen photos of Thai's work through a friend and was truly amazed and mesmerized by his talent. Thai and Giao are a husband and wife duo - Thai is the photographer, Giao, is his associate photographer. She's also a hair and makeup artist and she makes custom bridal hair pieces as well! If you decide to go with Thai Mai Photography, the package includes hair and makeup trial (to prepare for the big day) with Giao, engagement photos and wedding day photos...ALL this for an EXCELLENT STEAL!
Before I contacted Thai, I already had my heart set on having him photograph my wedding, but I just wanted to make sure I could afford his services. Listen up brides - Thai and Giao are worth EVERY PENNY!!!! Your search should end here because they are AMAZING. I cannot say it enough times, really! If anything, I believe their prices are too low (good for me since I'm the paying bride, bad for them since they're the ones doing all the work!) TRUST ME, you will not be disappointed. Giao has a creative eye - she comes up with CRAZY but definitely AMAZING ideas. Thai and Giao really complement each other!!! They are so easy to talk to and work with and they listen to what you want.
I did everything backwards! I eloped on 8/8/08 but never had a reception or celebration. So my big day is September 26, 2009. Every couple needs to have engagement photos!!! So I had to fit that in somewhere too! Lol
Well my hubby and I had had a great time! We were a little nervous at first...I'm not photogenic so I was worried the photos would turn out bad. but Giao made me a beautiful bride and both Giao and Thai took great photos!!! We had so much fun..9 hours of fun to be exact. Yes, NINE hours...I'm sure Thai and Giao were exhausted but they wanted us to be happy :-) Let's just say the night ended at 10pm...
My sister who is an amateur photographer tagged along for the shoot and captured many shots of us thanks to the helpful tips she received from Thai and Giao. Please check them out and see for yourself the wonderful job that Giao did on my hair and makeup! I've already told Thai and Giao that I'm booking them for my future pregnancy photos and family portraits! No, no, no - this is not a shot gun wedding, lol! We're not planning to have kids anytime soon, but when we do, I'll be calling up Thai and Giao for sure!
Like I said, they are AN AMAZING, WONDERFUL, CREATIVE husband and wife team!!! WORTH EVERY PENNY! I can't say enough good things about them! My husband and I are 1000% satisfied with our decision :-) I'm a stickler when it comes to service - I can be really anal with regards to my expectations, but i truly cannot think of one negative thing to say about Thai and Giao. If I could give 10 stars, I would! I will gladly recommend Thai and Giao's services to all of my friends and family...in fact, I already have! I hope all you brides reading this will give them the opportunity to make your big day a special and memorable one. Don't take my word for it (actually, please take my word for it) but do see for yourself! Contact them today! Trust me, you won't be disappointed :-)
If any brides would like to contact me with questions, please feel free to do so! I will be posting photos of my big day on my wedding website after September 26, 2009 so please check it out! www.thepanie.com. For now - I've posted a few shots that my sister captured with her camera, my makeup and hair were beautiful! UPDATE 10/10/09
Just had my wedding on 9/26/09 and let's just say that Thai did it again! More AMAZING photos! Thai totally captured the laughter and happiness at my reception. I love all the candid shots! I couldn't be happier! Thank you Thai for everything!

We had an engagement shoot with Thai last month in SF (where we got engaged) and it went well. Thai was very good at getting us to feel comfortable, which I think is super important for a wedding photographer. We walked all over the pier and he never tired of looking for areas we could use or getting us to laugh for a genuine expression to capture on film. I could tell he truly loves what he does. He even got a splinter from lying on the ground to frame a shot! How is that for dedication. The photos themselves turned out great. I’m just sad the day was completely overcast b/c I love to see how photographers use light.
In addition to being a good photographer, he is also an enthusiastic, fun guy who is a joy to be around. And has the perfect partner-in-crime, his wife Giao. She’s a professional makeup artist/hairstylist and they usually work together for engagement sessions. The few hours we spent with them flew by with lots of chats and laughter, and we feel like we’ve made new friends.
I recommend him to anyone who wants an outstanding photographer and fabulous photos!

We did an engagement session with Thai last month and LOVED the pictures! Thai is a talented photographer and is very easy to work with! we were looking for someone to shoot our tea ceremony in the morning and have decided to book Thai once he showed us our pictures! His price is VERY reasonable and his wife Giao Nguyen (www.giaonguyen.com) is also a talented MUA and bridal accessories designer. Can't wait to work with them on my big day!

Thai is a wonderful photographer. For someone who has not been in the wedding industry for that long, I must say he has a very keen eye for the best shot. My fiance and I went to the beach out here in Orange County for our engagement photos and had a blast working with Thai. Some people can get a little uncomfortable in front of the camera (like myself), but Thai was able to make us feel comfortable and make us laugh all while not making us look too "posed." He has great editing skills and doesn't ever do anything too cliche.
This awesome photographer is competitively priced and offers A LOT for what he charges. Most other professional (wedding) photographers will not give you much for even their mid-range priced packages, however that's not the case with Thai. Another plus is Thai's processing time. I've heard horror stories from my friends who've waiting months before they got to see proofs of their photos... you won't experience that with Thai.
If you're looking for a passionate photographer who will take any opportunity to take more photos, Thai is your guy. I'd recommend him (and his wife, Giao for hair and makeup) to anyone that's looking for an accomplished photographer to capture their special day and many other milestone moments in life.
Just look at his photos and let his work speak for itself.

Where do I even start with Thai? He's a great guy, easy to work with, and an excellent photographer! My fiance and I were blown away by the level of talent that showed in his photos and he made us feel comfortable and at ease in front of the camera. I showed friends and family the DVD of pictures he sent to us, and they all raved about how beautiful the pictures looked, and how he captured such natural moments and emotions. Both Giao (his wife) and Thai took very good care of us during our photo shoot. Thai is highly recommended if you're looking for a GREAT photographer. :)
We can't wait for him to shoot our wedding in August!
Edit:
Thai was just incredible on our wedding day! I don't even have the words to describe how above and beyond he went for us, and how much heart he put into his work. He prompt, enthusiastic, and raring to go at 8:00 am (when I was still rubbing the sleep out of my eyes). He made everybody feel so comfortable in front of the camera with his easy-going personality. Although DH and I were more practiced than the rest of the bridal party were, he made them feel wholly at ease as well. I don't think I ever saw him sit down the entire night! He was up and around like a ninja, always taking photos of...everything!
AND the MORNING after the wedding, I already had a dozen of teaser pictures from the day before right in my email! INCREDIBLE. I can't believe how fast his turnaround time is; it's superhuman! The photos were just BEAUTIFUL...there wasn't one photo in the group that we sent that we didn't like. His ideas are so creative and unique!
Thai and Giao were such a great team and made such an impression, that one of the groomsmen and his fiance decided they wanted to book him for their wedding after seeing him work that night!
His prices are VERY reasonable for the quality of work. He's really such an honest person and would never try to trick or swindle you. If you have a tight budget, he'll work with you to find a photography package that will suit your needs and still fit in your price range. He's worth every single penny you invest into him, and I'm sure he'll make sure of that as well. :)

I have pictures that I can frame!!! And its all because of Thai.
Thai did our aftershoot (detail and portraits) and my husband and I are so happy with the results. We decided to do an aftershoot because our wedding photographer did not deliver the same results on the wedding day - a day you cannot redo.
Thai artistically captured every single image - from rings to portraits.
We really appreciate that Thai took our suggestions into consideration. For example, we wanted outdoor portraits that were natureish/modern so Thai went out driving that morning (before our session) to explore places that fit the look. While he did this, he noticed that gray clouds were moving in fast and called us to let us know that we would be heading into some rain and suggested that we move out the shoot due to weather. This is what we call an awesome photographer who cares about his client getting the pictures they want - not one who wanted to get the photoshoot done and over with unlike our original photographer. We ended up doing the shoot indoors - which Fairmont served as a fabulous backdrop.
Thai is the man to capture your beautiful day that will last a lifetime.
Thanks Thai!!

We had an e-session with Thai recently and what a wonderful experience! My fiance and I aren't the most comfortable in front of the camera, but Thai really made us feel at ease. He and Giao are an awesome pair! They both have a great eye for photography and they find the most beautiful places to take pictures wherever we went. We enjoyed working with them so much we have been recommending them to everyone we know!

Thai did an outstanding job on our e-session. My fiance and I can't stop talking about how great the pics. came out. They are absolutely beautiful! They totally captured some great moments and the color and background that they brought into the shots are just gorgeous! Not to mention the amount of time they spent with us and and the different locations we went to for the cost was excellent.
We can't begin to thank him and Giao for the phenomenal job they did. Thanks again!

Thai is an AWESOME photog!! Not only is his work beautiful and stunning, he's a great guy and easy to get along with. He makes you feel comfortable in front of the camera (even to those who are very camera shy! like us!!). Him and Giao (his wife) are the sweetest people and i can't rave about them enough! I'm very excited to have them both at our wedding!!

Thai shot our engagement photos, and they came out great. He was down to earth and very energetic during the photo shoot. Even though we had just met him that day, his personality is so great and friendly it felt like we'd known him for years. He's also super creative and fun. Also, he is great with emails and posting the pictures at his website quickly. I think we saw them two days later! And they are oh so gorgeous. Check out his photos at his website (thaiphotoblog.com). He really is an amazing photographer!

We did an engagement shoot with Thai after his wife, Giao (of QGDesigns), let us know of his services. Giao did my Hair and Makeup for the shoot, and accompanied us, fixing my hair and checking my makeup on the way. It was great!
I had seen some of Thai's work with other brides on PW and man, am I impressed! My FI and I talked the whole way home about how awesome it was to have such an enthusiastic, passionate person to work with. He helped with directing us on poses, but at the same time let us be natural. It was such a joyful experience. He worked through the rain and bitter cold to capture photos for us (with no umbrella). How's that for dedication?
I can't wait to see our pics!

Update: 4/10/09
We got our pictures with lightening speed after our session with Thai. He was truly a pleasure to work with. Our family and friends are amazed that he is just starting out, and have asked for multiple copies of the photos. DH is giving referrals left and right! What I like best about our pictures is that Thai got us. He captured who we are in his lens and we could look at the pictures and say....yup, that's us. He got the funny way we laugh, the way DH kisses me on the forehead, all of it. Thank you Thai for such heartwarming pictures and memories. Your truly have a gift.
One word - Genius.
Thai was just born with an amazing eye that few photographers have. As i learned the hard way, just because a "photographer" has a fancy site and state-of-the art equipment, doesn't make them take good pictures...i wish i had known Thai back when i got married as I would have hired him in a heartbeat. The photographer i hired back then was one of the biggest regrets of my life. Being that your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life, it really bites when your photographer has done a less than mediocre job and very sad when your guests, with their point & shoot cameras come up with better pics than your pricey "photographer".
Anyways, my husband and i recently hired Thai to do a 3-year-later aftershoot (sort of like Thai's e-sessions), and i also snuck in a mini trash-the-dress. My husband, who's not a picture-guy, was totally at ease with Thai. You just feel very comfortable with Thai; he has such a cool vibe. I LOVE the moments that Thai captured and finally feel like my husband and i have pictures we can look back on and be proud of. he just simply captured "us".
Thai has also shot the weddings of some of my closest friends. he has a knack for capturing the special moments/details in a way that makes you feel the emotions of the couples in his pictures. They are truly special and you'd understand what i mean by looking at his blog. i've gotten teary eyed looking at his slideshows for goodness' sake!
On top of it all, Thai is just a great guy; he's a family man, great husband, dad and friend. He's a true talent . Also, his wife Giao is also amazingly talented in hair/makeup and photography. They are the go-to duo! what a team!
I look forward to future sessions with Thai (pregnancy and family) as he's become our go-to photographer. i can't say enough about him! he's a Genius!!
Pictures:
The images Thai captured are amazing! He is equally adept at setting up a shot, as he is at capturing an unplanned moment. When we saw a preview of our images on his website, we were shocked to see that he captured a certain special item that my husband wore. On a day where the focus is obviously on the Bride and Groom, he was able to find one small object and capture it beautifully. He recognized the importance of my husband's Marine Corps tie-clasp and made sure to include it in our images. Words cannot explain how happy he was that Thai was able to do that for him.
Wedding related stress:
None. Zero. He simply did not contribute to the stress that all couples are supposed to feel. He actually had a calming effect on all of us.
We were very impressed with Thai and his wife, Giao. They have a great blend of professionalism and friendliness. On the day of our wedding, his method of communication was perfect for us. If he felt rushed or stressed, it was well hidden, and we never saw it. Thai and Giao were as present as we needed them to be at certain times, and they were as invisible as they were supposed to be at other times. He seemed to always be in the right place at the right moment. We didn't know how he was able to do that and yet never get in the way. He must have been trained by ninja's.
My husband was worried that the presence of a photographer would "cramp his style" and make it impossible for him to be himself. He couldn't have been more wrong. Thai's demeanor made him feel comfortable, as if 'his good old friend Thai was there taking pictures at our wedding'.
We've decided to make Thai our official photographer to capture all the major events in our lives.
When we first me Thai Mai and Giao we immediately hit it off. They were were friendly and knew exactly what we wanted. Our first Engagement session went very well and we visited a couple locations over the two days of shooting. He definitely knows how to make you laugh and feel comfortable. His prices are very reasonable for the quality of work he produces. We think Thai does a fantastic job at engagement photos and we were very pleased with his results. He even turned around our teasers quickly. When it came time for our wedding he did a wonderful job. He captured many great moments that we love to look at over and over. He works very hard and certainly will get you the results you want. I would highly recommend Thai Mai for anyone looking to get their Engagement Session and Wedding photographed.
Thai is a great photographer! Very nice, accommodating, easy going, and VERY talented. Most importantly, my kids love him! :) He just has a way of making every one of us feel comfortable in front of the camera.
I love each and every one of his work! He's able to capture the most breathtaking images. He's a true artist! He also has a great assistant--his wife! She does truly beautiful makeup (very natural) and hair (amazing!).
He has captured many of our family's memories, from birthday parties, to family pictures, holiday portraits, maternity photos, and most recently, newborns pictures of my son. I'm looking forward to many more photo sessions w/ him in the future! Thai is definitely our go-to photographer. :)
When I first saw went to his website, my jaw dropped. The vibrant colors, the style, and the way he captured the couples was just breathtaking. Log onto his blog, and you'll see what i'm talking about.
Thai's prices are extremely fair. He will deliver a product that will blow other photographers out of the water (and they are charging double).
Thai knew how to direct us with each shot so that he could capture the most intimate moments. We used Thai for our E-session in Sonoma, and throughout the whole 3 hours, I kept thinking how easy Thai made it for us, it was comfortable and fun!
Although we have only seen some "teasers", they are absolutely phenomenal.
Talented photographer whose work has been praised by many PW brides. To see more of Thai's work please go here...http://thaiphotoblog.com/
