The Black Walnut Gallery
We had our September wedding at the Black Walnut Gallery and it was the perfect venue for us. We had the ceremony in the enclosed brick wall courtyard and moved inside for a plated dinner reception. The courtyard itself was very pretty and definitely had an artsy urban feel to it. Plus, there are a few external building staircases in the courtyard which allowed our photographer to get some amazing "bird's eye view" pictures of the ceremony and our first dance. The inside of the gallery is nice; tall ceilings, track lighting, light wood floors, and--bonus--art on the walls (it is an art gallery, after all)! We were able to dress it up and make it look pretty fairly easily and inexpensively. We had just over 50 guests, which was perfect for the space (for both the ceremony and reception).
A warning: you are outside in Chicago and near the el, but the 4 walled courtyard really blunted the train and the wind. The train could still be heard, but we were able to briefly pause or speak up (depending on who was talking)....and it is outside in downtown Chicago, after all.
Robert, the gallery owner, was easy to work with, but make sure you get everything in your contract. We had a few surprises (A couple weeks before the wedding, we were told he no longer had enough tables and we needed to rent more through the caterer. Also, the day of the wedding, we were told we could not have the speakers in the courtyard for the whole reception because of the neighbors.)
Overall, it was the perfect venue for us--unique, non-traditional, and very "urban Chicago."
