The Buono Bakery
The cake was beautiful to look at and just as good to eat. They aim to please with your selection of style of cake and color decorations. I was very pleased with Buono's Bakery.
Buono's was wonderful for my cake. My ceremony uses them for their cakes and I decided to make the trip from Jersey to visit them in order to design my cake. The gentleman from the bakery was extremely nice although it was a bit strange to be just standing at the bakery counter deciding on my cake. We decided on a unique design and he told me what would be feasible and what wouldn't. My only issue with my cake was the colors. I am a true perfectionist and my entire wedding was black and white with a hint of hot pink and green. My cake from afar looked black and white, but was actually ivory and brown. I was upset about this, but glad it HOPEFULLY won't show up in my pictures.
we recently got married on 3-25-11 we had a custom wedding cake made from buono bakery all we did was get compliments on how nice the cake was decorated and how good it tasted thanks so much a+++++
I never had any direct contact with them, as our wedding cake came in the package that we got from our venue; however, I did want a certain cake and I was never told that the cost was going to be so much more to have fondant, as I am still new to the fondant cakes. However, I did give them a little creative control to make something similar and they did, which turned out to be almost what I wanted. I couldn't have the exact one as you can't make leaves out of buttercream.
HOWEVER, there was an incident after the reception where a guest of ours ended up smashing the cake and destroying it after helping us carry boxes into our home and DH called the bakery and they were too happy to make us another one either at no charge (which I am hoping happens) or for a very nominal fee and the guest will pay for it. The only down side about this is that we will have to go and pick it up at our venue, which, in the grand scheme of things, is not that big of a deal.
For the actual flavor of the cake, we had a cannoli filling and OMG, it was one of the best cakes I have ever tasted. All in all, I am very pleased with this bakery and if they were not so far away from our home, we would be ordering from them in the future.
We had our wedding an Island Chateau and they are partnered with Buono bakery for the wedding cake so you basically get your wedding cake included which is good. You can upgrade if you want. You can only go on Mondays between 4-9 to taste the fillings because they are busy on other days. This was difficulty for us since we don't live on Staten Island so we had to commute in after work. Weekend hours were not available which is why i gave a 3 for flexibility. We scheduled an appointment and went and the owner was very nice and made us up a plate of all the fillings---napolean creme, canoli cream, chocolate mousse, vanilla pudding, chocolate pudding, vanilla cake, strawberriees --I think you can get two fruits. You get your choice of two fillings and one or two fruits I think; you can also choose to do different combos in different tiers.
So first we looked through the book to pick a cake we liked (they're all pretty nice). We chose a simple, classic looking cake----scalloped design on the sides with a few buttercream flowers on each tier. Then we sampled all the fillings and i was pretty impressed; very tasty. We didn't want any fruit in the cake and we ended up choosing canoli cream with chocolate mouse and the vanilla cake.
I actually really wanted red velvet cake with cream cheese icing which is so good---just buy one of their red velvet cupcakes (the icing is amazing) but the owner said that cream cheese icing tends to crack and if it did it wouldn't look so nice so we ended up going with the vanilla cake with chocolate mouse
and canoli cream covered in whipped cream (vs buttercream) because the buttercream was super sweet and he said that the whipped cream looks smoother on the cake.
Then we decided on the design that we wanted purple and dark pink buttercream flowers on each tier (like just 3 clustered together) instead of fake flowers since I don't like things not edible on cakes. And that was that, really simple and easy; it took like an hour; i had a red velvet cupcake on my way out and was very excited and feeling confident that the cake would be awesome.
The day of the wedding I was a bit disappointed with how the cake looked because ---YELLOW FLOWERS! YELLOW FLOWERS! When i saw the cake i thought it looked very plain but that was fine since we chose a simple cake BUT THEN I SAW THE FLOWERS. One purple, one pink, and one YELLOW on each tier; these yellow flowers made it look like a birthday cake. I was a bit embarassed by how it looked to be honest but i downplayed it. I think he should have made the flowers bigger first of all cause they were too small and I don't know what made him put yellow flowers anywhere on this cake since WE SPECIFICALLY AGREED ON ONLY PINKS AND PURPLE FLOWERS, not to mention it was winter. I don't know what happened but I plan on complaining to Island Chateau about that.
Other than the yellow flowers the cake looked very smooth and tasted great; but i still just can't get over the yellow flowers. I guess it doesn't matter too much since i plan on asking the photographer if he can digitally color them purple or pink; who knows if possible.
Also included are little pastries and cookies from Buono bakery during the dessert hour (we didn't have a full Venetian hour). The pastries were pretty good, cookies not bad. Again my only complaint would be the yellow flowers on my wedding cake and i have no idea where he got this idea but it was a bad one. But the cake did taste pretty damn good and people told me that at the wedding as well, so I guess I would recommend this bakery.
Our reception site, the Island Chateau, is partnered with Buono Bakery to do the wedding cake. It's included in the reception price, but you go to Buono to order your cake. We had a great tasting, picked out our icing colors, flavors, and fillings. The baker was very nice and wrote out our order on a piece of paper with the ribbon we wanted wrapped around our layers. Day of the wedding, the cake was not what we ordered - the only thing they got right was our ribbon and centerpiece. We wanted mint green icing with white latticework, instead we got all white icing with polka dots and swirls. We wanted chocolate cake with a layer of strawberries with chocolate mousse and a layer of strawberries with Napolean cream. It was a vanilla cake with a layer of strawberries and a layer of Napolean cream. This was the ONLY thing that went wrong on our wedding day. We told the manager at the Island Chateau who informed us that the baker's mother had just died, which may have been the reason behind it. But the ribbon that was on the cake was ATTACHED to a list of what we ordered, so how this mistake was so blatant, we don't know. However, the Island Chateau gave us a chocolate fountain for our dessert hour free of charge and are going to get us a top tier of the cake we actually ordered for us to have on our first anniversary. So at least they tried to make it right. It was still kind of disappointing, but like I said, it was the only thing to go wrong the entire day, so I can't complain that much.
