The Buttery in Santa Cruz is the best of the best of the best! Your guests will not be disappointed at all. In fact, I wish I could get married again just for an excuse to buy that much delicous cake. Carrot cake is hands down the best but you can't go wrong with the chocolate either. Jill at The Buttery was a true professional and really knows her stuff. She even helped me surprise my parents with their own 50th Wedding Anniversary cake at my wedding. She went above and beyond to locate an "old" cake topper that resembled my parents from 1961. It was awesome knowing that my guests were leaving with the best taste in their mouths! Worth every penny! I did over project how much cake we would need, but it froze nicely and didn't even last long in the freezer (because we ate it).

The wedding cake was a amazing. It was a lemon poppy seed with lemon curd. The only issue was the three tiers looked separated on the dessert table, there was a black space between each layer. Other than that it was great. Hopefully it doesn't look messed up in the pictures!

Cake looked beautiful and tasted great. However, they are a little pricey and they do not deliver, so you will need someone to pick up the cake on your wedding day.

The first time I had one of The Buttery's carrot cake cupcakes, I knew what my wedding cake was going to be (and this was before I was even engaged!). And that is what we got. And we were not disapointed.

You know how at most weddings, you can't really remember what the cake tasted like or even if you ate any? Not the case here. Our guests not only finished every last bite of our wedding cake but asked us where it was from and how to get more (really!). Needless to say, it was a big hit.

The only one drawback was delivery. My wedding was in San Francisco, about 70 miles from Santa Cruz. The Buttery would not/could not deliver, so we had to scramble to find someone to take it up for us. The Buttery did try their darndest to find someone we could hire to deliver for us, but in the end no one came forward. They also helped us design a cake that could withstand some travel. Fortunately I had a brave friend willing to take on the responsibility, but just something to keep in mind if you are planning to use the Buttery for a wedding outside of the Santa Cruz area.

If you are looking for a SUPERB cake that people will be talking about for a long time to come, a beautiful cake at a reasonable price, go to the Buttery.

Awesome! The Buttery made us a cake that was elegant and tasted amazing. If you've never tasted their neapolitan cake you should! I was very happy with the results! BTW their carrot cake is unbelievable! We didn't choose that flavor however only because my fiance doesn't appreciate "vegetables in dessert"

Staff was friendly and the cake was okay. The carrot cake was great but the red velvet was a bit dry from what I heard from my guests.

The cake was beautiful! It looked just like the picture we selected and it was made with colors that matched the swatches we provided. All of that was important... but it wouldn't have meant anything if it didn't taste good!
Luckily, it tasted AMAZING. Just like it did in the tasting session.
If you are local to the SC area, try this place. It has great wedding cakes for sure, but I've had breakfast there a few times and lunch as well.. all of it is delicious!
We were pleased with our cake, which was more modern.. fondant, no flowers, sculpted.. and our guests are still talking about how good it is. Yay!

Got lots of comments on how good the cake was. They were very flexible, I changed a part of the design a week before the wedding with no problems. When we added a grooms cake at the last minute they were happy to accommodate.

Carrot cake was my husband's only requirement and man did they deliver!!! Not only was the cake unbelievably good, but the presentation was out of this world!!! I would highly, highly recommend them to anyone!!!

The Buttery created two cakes for our wedding. The first was our wedding cake, a four tier cake (two tiers of carrot cake, one tier of chocolate cake with chocolate ganache; and one tier of white cake with ollallaberry jam). The cake was coated in an Italian buttercream frosting and decorated with green fern leaves. The second was a brunch cake for the morning after the reception. It was a seasonal strawberry shortcake. Both cakes were delicious and beautiful. I worked with Jill at the Buttery and she was extremely responsive and good about following up. The wedding cake tastings at the Buttery are a ton of fun and the employees make the entire process easy. Be sure to have brunch, lunch, or dinner there while you're at it.

The Buttery made us two cakes.They both where German chocolate and where decorated beautifully.We where more than pleased with our wedding cake.The price was cheap and we where able to have a lot of freedom with design and flavor.

Our cake was beautiful and delicious. The price was very fair, and I even bought a small cake from their case when we got there because it was so cute and matched our wedding cake theme of the ocean. My husband is still laughing at me because I love chocolate and have always disliked carrot cake. At the tasting, I fell in love with carrot cake and had two tiers made in carrot cake and one organic strawberries and cream. (no chocolate) I would definitely recommend the Buttery.

The Buttery Bakery was the only way to go for our July, 2009 wedding in Monterey. This was one of the last vendors we needed to select, and probably the most difficult to decide on. Our original plan was to just go to Safeway and order a cake from their wedding collection, but after attending a bridal fair and meeting the ladies of The Buttery, we knew they were the bakery for us. Very laid back and nice, they described the cakes they could make and their prices were affordable, considering the over the top prices some other vendors were charging. We scheduled a tasting with their coordinator, which by the way is really nice and patient. At our tasting we decided on a four tier chocolate devil's food cake with two types of filling, fudge ganache and hazelnut cream with a white buttercream frosting accented by clusters of green cymbidium orchids on each tier, white chocolate shells and topped by two blue sugar paste dolphins. Lovely. (but try their carrot cake, one of the best I've ever had) they have books and books of photos of cakes to give you inspiration, because we had no idea what we wanted.

The cake arrived on time without any problems, eventhough it was traveling from Santa Cruz to our venue in Monterey. And the cake? Divine. A bit rich maybe for most, but perfect for us. Highly recommend.

The Buttery has always made us great tasting cakes.We saved money for our wedding cake because we knew it would be expensive but we definitely wanted something special.It was a pleasure to work with the staff and thank them for making us a perfect cake.You definitely wont regret working with The Buttery.

You wont find a better place for a cake then The Buttery!This is definitely the place to go if you want a beautifully designed and special tasting cake.Their staff is very friendly and their prices are perfect.

Our cake was stunning.

We ordered a seashell theme that is displayed in their upstairs office. It went perfectly with our venue site.

Subtly decorated with sugar shells, tiny bubbles, and sea foam aqua colored icing.

The carrot cake was so succulent and the wedding white with ollaberry filling was perfect for a late summer’s eve.

The Buttery makes the best cakes.I knew I wanted to work with them when I saw some of their work.Their attention to detail is extraordinary.We opted with a traditional White Cake.It was really amazingly decorated and tasted so good.The people working here are very nice and friendly when you come and visit them.I would definitely recommend them for wedding cakes especially if you want to make your guests happy.

I came to the Buttery with small budget and not a lot of time (about a month or month and a half before the wedding). They were able to work with me and provide a beautiful wedding cake. It was exactly how it'd pictured it. The only caveat was that, because I had a smaller order (a two-tiered cake and a sheet cake for 100 guests), we had to pick it up the day of the wedding. It would have been easier if they had delivered it to the site.

We decided to go with one of their Mocha Cream Cake.Their decoration techniques are really the best.They delivered our cake and set it up so that everyone could see it as they walked in.I was speechless when I laid eyes on it, exactly what I had wanted.

My mom ordered and paid for the wedding cake, to my specifications. I requested a cake composed of ingredients they offered, but whoever was taking the order was incompetent. They made my mom cry!!! My mom is no push over, either. She asked for chocolate devil's food cake with fresh raspberries in between the layers with chocolate ganache frosting and marzipan medallions on the top. I know for a fact that The Buttery has all of these things from my purchases in the past and what I have seen displayed in the bakery. The woman who took our order wouldn't put marizpan on the cake, and somehow took about 35 minutes to understand what my Mom was asking for. Hence, the crying.

When we went to pick up the cake, I made sure to go and request the marzipan medallions in person (but it was my wedding day, and a bride shouldn't have to go to that length).

I think The Buttery has superlative baked goods and when I go in for coffee and a cookie or roll, they have a very responsive staff. But, whoever is manning the phone line orders seems to be really difficult to work with.

The Buttery was wonderful!They where very professional and the price was just right.They made my wedding cake exactly how I had asked them to do it.The colors and the design came out great. Everyone kept saying the cake was perfect and I had to agree.They are the best bakery in Santa Cruz.

I gave them 3 weeks notice to make a 4 tiered Halloween wedding cake complete with marzipan pumpkins. While a bit costly, I knew that my cake would be beautiful AND delicious, which is more than can be said for cakes from other local bakeries such as Gayles. (Gayles cakes are delicious, however their wedding cakes have a tendency to taste old).
I was presented with many delicious options at my tasting, and the consultant waited very patiently while I flipped through book after book of photos trying to find a cake that was remotely anything like I had imagined. My rather unusual selection of Halloween-like flowers and decorations were encouraged and embraced. My experience was that if it was possible, they'll be more than happy to do it.
My cake arrived on-time and in great condition, looking absolutely gorgeous and perfect (I've seen far more expensive cakes come out much worse).
I always recommend The Buttery for cakes to anyone for any occasion, simply because they're wonderful!

The cake was soooo delicious and beautiful. And if you're worried about budget, the trick we learned was to just not have the layers stacked. We had three cakes that came out to less than $80. It was seriously one of the best parts of the wedding.

Great tasting cake, but a bit pricey. Deal with Jan she's the best!

Beautiful cake, and the most delicious wedding cake I've had. Our layers were all different. And they give you a free anniversary cake for your first anniversary - no eating frozen cake!
