The Great Dane Baking Company
I absolutely love my cake! Not only was it delicious but it exceeded my expectation on the design. I showed Jodi several cake designs that I liked and took specific elements in each to come up with my design. In the end, it was exactly what I had envisioned in my head and made it a reality.
I have mixed feelings about this bakery. As a local, I used to order several cakes for birthdays and various events from Great Dane. On at least 6 different occassions, the service was horrible. A lady named Maria was so rude and acted like she could care less about our business.
The first time they ruined a cake was for my cousin's son's first birthday party. She cried when she saw the cake. My cousin had spent an hour going over books and telling them what she did and did not like. They created a horrible clown looking cake. She spent over $150 for this cake. To their credit, they did give her a partial refund. But it was an important day and the cake was important to her. She was embarassed to set it out in front of her guests.
The second time they ruined a cake was for an anniversary dinner for my aunt. I went in my cousin to order the cake. We should have known better because they did mess up on a few of our orders in the past. But the cakes are good, and they're creative when they listen to you. When I went to pick up the cake, they had written the wrong names on the cake. Their designer was already gone for the day so the lady who was helping me scraped the top off and tried to write it in icing. She was trying to be helpful but it looked horrible. To make matters worse, the cake was dry and the wrong flavor.
Recently at my friend's wedding in September, they ordered a chocolate ganache cake. It was unusually warm for September, so the cake started melting. After the florist and coordinator moved the cake to an air conditioned room, they noticed the cake was lopsided and poorly put together. The cake could not be put out on display like my friend had wanted, and it looked really bad in her pictures.
However, I have seen beautiful and wonderful tasting cakes come from this bakery. I guess it really is a crap shoot, or my friends and family don't have good luck with this place.
This was the only bakery that I went to that I felt confident that they could get the design aspect right for our wedding cake. I was pretty specific with what I wanted and Jodi was able to capture it perfectly. My wedding cake came out exactly like how I pictured it... maybe even a little better. It tasted great too! I posted a picture... it is the one with the butterflies, pink and orange ribbon and rhinestone H cake topper. The only two negative I would have it that 1. Jodi is very busy and at times hard to get a hold of and 2. They messed up my cake flavors slightly. My bottom tier was supposed to be chocolate and the top two tiers were to be lemon. Instead I got two layers (Bottom & Middle) of chocolate and only the top tier lemon. I was disappointed that my guests didn't get any lemon cake, but in the end it wasn't a huge deal. If I could do it over again I would just double and triple check the order becuase it was the write up of the order that caused the confusion. Otherwise I would recomend them!
When we went for the cake tasting with Jodi -- we booked her right away!! Her cake flavors were unbelievable. Very unique and delicious!!! It was so good that we ordered a birthday cake for our sis in law couple weeks after that haha. Jodi was very good in presenting all the designs and guiding us. I wanted to use the brown and blue ribbon and she gave me a sample of butter cream and told me to try it on the ribbon since the colors might fade and not look nice. She was very honest and helpful with our decisions. She was ON TIME on the day of and did a great job. The cake was phenomenal!!! All the guests loved the cake plus we will get to eat it again on our anniversary!! Great Dane makes the best wedding cakes!!
Our cake was SO good! And it looked so pretty, too! :) When I walked into the reception room for the first time after it was decorated, I was so happy when I saw the cake. It was just how I invisioned it. Our flavors were, bottom to top: marble cake with vanilla bavarian filling, white cake with tiramisu filling, and chocolate cake with vanilla bavarian filling. Several people came up to me during the reception to tell me how good it tasted!
The only reason I am knocking it down to 4 stars instead of 5 (which is what I would rate the cake alone) was because there was some confusion during the planning process. I had to bring in my own ribbon for the cake decoration, but I was not told what kind of ribbon to bring in. I found some ribbon that matched my color exactly, but after I brought it in, I was strongly told that it was the wrong kind of ribbon. I was not in anyway a Bridezilla (I was told by friends and family that I was the most relaxed bride they had ever known!) but I felt that it was assumed that I was. I don't know anything about ribbon (I wasn't even sure where to buy it) and I had no idea that the kind of ribbon I brought in would make a difference, but it apparently does. (So make sure you bring in SATIN ribbon :) That was the only instance I was treated that way (and it was over the phone, not in the store) but it still made an impression, so I wanted to include it in my review.
BOTTOM LINE: I would still highly recommend this bakery for your wedding cake. You will be very happy with the results (and get to eat some delicious cake!)
I have heard nothing but great things about this bakery so my fiancé and I went in for a tasting of wedding cakes. The tasting was excellent however my only complaint was that we stood there for some time without anyone asking us if we needed help. I tried not to let the lack of service detour me but I had to remind them twice that we were there for a tasting. When they finally got to us the cake was amazing and we decided to order our wedding cake from them. My two interactions after we ordered the cake were less than professional. My only advice for people is this bakery has amazing cakes but their service leaves A LOT to be desired.
My cake was more beautiful then I could have imagined. It was so perfect & it was delicious! I got a 3 1/2 layer cake plus a groom's cake & they looked exactly how I wanted them to - actually more amazing then the sketch I drew up. It was the talk of the wedding. =)
I can't wait to go back for another cake with fresh mangos & mango mousse. Soooooo yummy!
Awesome cake! Not too sweet, and sooo tasty! We had fresh strawberries, cheesecake filling, white cake, and buttercream frosting. We received tons of compliments on our cake. Someone even poked it because they thought it was fake! The next day we had a lot of leftover cake, and people stopped by, had some, and raved about it. My brother brought in our top layer to his workplace, and his co–workers loved it! They all said it was the best cake they ever had (even if it was 2 days old!). They thought he was crazy for taking the top layer, but we didn’t need it since we will get a free anniversary cake next year (we just have to fly out to CA for it).
They did a GREAT job making my cake look beautiful and helping me to choose colors that were complementary to my wedding. Occasionally they could be a little dry and rude but overall it was a good experience. I definitely got what I wanted. No complaints!
I just got married and got my wedding cake from here. We ordered the chocolate cake with strawberry mousse with the whipped creme frosting.
It looked exactly like what we wanted (we gave them a picture and requested a few changes) and it was SO YUMMY!
They delivered the cake right on time and it was perfect.
I'm really excited to get the *free* one year anniversary cake!
Delicious, delicious cake! And beautiful as well. I love this bakery and they did such a good job on my cake. They are also reasonably priced compared to other bakeries and they throw in a free one year wedding anniversary cake. They have a wide variety of flavor choices, but my favorite was the white cake with vanilla bavarian cream and bananas. My husband liked the marble cake with fresh whipped cream and blackberries. You can pick 3 flavor combinations for the cake tasting. I also decided to go with danish buttercream, instead of fondant, but they were able to make it look so smooth I couldn't tell the difference (except that it tasted better!). I was so glad I found them!
Our cake turned out amazing – so soft, rich and yummy! We had major excess in cake (I opted not to downsize it from the 50 we ordered it for originally) that we were glad to take home. The rich chocolate with peanut butter mouse was by far our favorite. Did I mention it was stunning? I think everyone got more pictures of our cake than they got of us. I originally located them through a bridal show (worth it - we got 10% off!). The cake was design was one of their model cakes that used to be in their show room in Los Alamitos
Holy schmoly, our cake looked awesome!!! I brought a picture to Great Dane and they made it look even better than I was hoping. I had just arrived at Park Prive when it was being dropped off and I started screaming and jumping up and down when I saw it. I was thrilled with how it looked. It was also very, very tasty. We had marble cake with chocolate mousse filling and chocolate cake with vanilla Bavarian crme filling and it was sooooo good. The only bummer is that I don’t think anyone really ate it. They were all so busy with the dang chocolate fountain. I had some (okay, a LOT), though, and I loved it.
