Reviews for The Music Man Productions
Jack was fun & easy to work with. We got his DJ services from 6:30 till midnight for $895 and 20 uplights at $18/light, so he is very reasonably priced.
Jack mentioned that he was DJ-ing at 6 weddings the weekend of our wedding and his hectic schedule showed. Our wedding was bilingual (Vietnamese/American) so I had Jack MC in English and someone else MC in Vietnamese. I had emailed him his MC parts for the special moments such as the father-daughter dance but he forgot to bring it and so it was only introduced in Vietnamese and half of our guests didn't get to hear my dedication to my dad.
I also sent him our songlist and discussed with him that I wanted a lot of current, top 40 music, but for some reason he kept playing 80's songs. My MOH even went up to him to ask him to play more recent songs but that didn't help much. A lot of guest asked me what was with all the 80's music. He also wasn't as energetic as I'd hope a DJ/MC to be and isn't quick on his feet in terms of dealing with last minute changes (expect them during your wedding ladies!).
That being said, he is very friendly and likeable. He arrived early, had everything set up perfectly and did a wonderful job on the uplighting. We had paid for 20 uplights but he set up 12 extra lights, free of charge, to better accomodate the size of our venue. We also forgot the cables & dvd player for our slidshow and he provided those free of charge also.
We hired Jack for our wedding DJ/MC. After doing some searching for a biligual English/Chinese DJ's in the Los Angeles area, we meet with Jack. He was very professional and his prices was very reasonable. We paid approx $725 for 6+ hours of DJ/MC and included all the dance floor lights and equipments. Jack also has excellent prices on lighting, $15/uplight and can also do custom bride/groom names or any design on gobo lights for the dance floor.
Jack did have a few slipups during our reception but partly due to some of our last minute changes and add-ons plus not to mention the very limited time set-up we had prior to the reception.
We would recommend Jack if your looking for a honest, hardworking, professional, fun, energetic biligual DJ/MC. As for the lighting prices, his prices can't be beat. Overall we were satisfied with Jack's work.
Jack is the most Americanized bilingual DJ/MC we came across. His prices are some of the most reasonable that I've seen (not dirt cheap, but still reasonable). He might be a good fit if you're more or less Americanized, but want to keep your family entertained and happy. I believe he also has a Vietnamese DJ/MC with whom he works with, if you need Vietnamese language.
I hired Jack and also saw him in action at my friend's wedding. I would agree that he tends to play too loudly. It was actually painful at my friend's wedding and our whole table had their fingers in their ears. It made for a funny picture at least.
I understand that Jack can speak ok Mandarin but I know it's not the best and he admits himself he is most comfortable MCing in English. It was not an issue for us because we wanted our reception completely in English. Just a side note for some of you gals.
His price is good. It's convenient that he can MC and DJ at the same time for that price. (price depends also on how many guests you have, we had 185)
He did a good job with picking fun games for us on the day of. I knew I wanted to play a couple games but didn't bother to plan which ones and I let him take the reins at the reception. We had a good time with the ones he picked.
Make sure you tell him specifically you don't want him to sing if that is a concern for you. I heard about his singing the first dance song for a couple so I didn't want that to happen to me and it didn't.
The only complaint that I had was that I was very specific with what music I wanted playing during the reception while people were eating, giving him a complete list of song titles and specific artists for each song and he for some reason decided to go off of the list. Also he decided to pick different versions of songs I had chosen, picking a SPANISH version of the song Hero I wanted by Mariah Carey by some male singer. I'd rather he just didn't play the song.
Also, he was not the most responsive with email. I'm sure he's a busy person. This is a side job. He is an engein
He was good at playing specific songs I chose for events such as first dance, grand entrance, cake cutting, and food parade.
He was good at improvising on the fly. DH and I went upstairs to change for the bouquet and garter toss and he started to announce the garter toss when I remembered that I had forgotten to put on the garter! So I interrepted him and he thought of a way to stall for time by playing the anniversary dance game and we awarded an older couple with an arrangement from the head table. That was a great idea!
His equipment sounded good (disclaimer:I don't know much about music equipment!) I do remember at my friend's reception the mic was WAY too loud however but I did not notice anything at my own reception. Hopefully my guests were okay.
He is ethical too. I had an appointment to see him before my friend's wedding that he was hired for and I was attending and was concerned that he might book my date before then and he said that he would reserve the date for me until that meeting a few weeks later. Meanwhile, he found out his cousin was going to get married on my wedding date and he still honored that agreement and I booked him right away.(does this mean he missed his cousin's wedding reception?!)
I am definitely glad we hired him because overall he is a good MC and DJ.
We hired Jack and Sophia as our DJ/MC for our wedding this weekend and could not have been more pleased. We had a huge delay with our reception, and both Jack and Sophia were able to keep our guests (those that arrived on time)entertained during that time. Jack is very easy to work with, speaks excellent English and Mandarin. He did not speak Cantonese, but has Sophia as an MC as part of his group. She was wonderful. She is fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese, and English (with no accent!). There were reveiws about the music being too loud, but I did not experience this at my wedding. Overall, it was a great experience and guests are continuing to rave about Jack and Sophia. The reception was always high enery and fun.
I would highly recommend Jack and Sohpia to anyone who is looking for a great DJ/MC at an affordable price.
Jack exceeded our expectations in a positive way. He can be a bit snippy, even with the wedding party, but we preferred an outspoken DJ rather than a meek one. We gave him a list of songs to play for the ceremony, post-reception and reception entrance. Everything else was up to him. We had our own part-time MC, but Jack stepped up and did many of the MC duties quite well. He did play a couple of cheesy old Chinese songs when we changed into the qwa, but our older family members liked that. Jack is dedicated to his work - he came to our rehearsal and played after the reception until everyone left the dance floor. The music was really loud for the dancing part and I told him to turn it down twice, but the volume was still too loud. Needless to say, all of the older family members vacated as soon as the dance music came on. Overall, Jack is a great, hardworking vendor who will do the job. If you want an MC as well as a DJ, he’s the man.
Jack is such a delight to work with! He's very easy-going and not pushy at all. He gave us many honest and helpful suggestions on the right package. Jack was also patient (I had so many questions and I'm planning from out-of-town, so you can imagine the email exchanges) and was always responsive. We were discusing both DJ/MC and lighting packages. Unfortunately, due to some personal reasons, we're not likely going to be able to book Jack, but I still think he deserves a great review for his professionalism and VERY reasonable price packages. I think it'll be tough to find a better value for his expertise and price anywhere. Highly recommended, so definitely get in touch with Jack and see for yourself.
Jack's prices were really good and he was really easy to work with. But there were a couple of problems that came up at the reception. If you're having him do the lights and the gobo, make sure that they are properly set up prior to the beginning of the reception. Luckily I had two coordinators who looked at it before anyone was there in order to fix it.
Also, the tech that was working the projector for the photo montage completely messed up. While he was testing out the slideshow prior to the wedding, the tech did not reset my slideshow to the beginning. So when it was time for all the guests to see the photo montage, it started in the middle of the slideshow. The tech didn't even try to start it from the beginning. He just kept it going. So I just let it go, but no one was able to see the beginning.
So just make sure that you have someone look over the setup of the lights and stuff prior to the start of the reception. Other than that, his prices are good and he's very responsive. Also his lights completely made a difference in the ambiance of the reception and it was beautiful.
