The Outer Banks Cake Company
We had a lot of trouble finding a cake company in the Outer Banks that fit within our budget. A $6,000 wedding budget only allowed us $300 for the cake itself (including delivery) for 60 people. After a month of searching, I came to the conclusion that I'd have to settle for a grocery store cake with our budget. One of the grocery store bakers that I spoke to referred me to Christine at the Outer Banks Cake Company. Her company was just starting up, but she had more then 10 years of experience in the field. After speaking to Christine, I was ecstatic. She could make us a 3 tier round (one dummy layer) wedding cake (with gourmet flavors, and filling) for less then $300, and delivery was free! She offers, without a doubt, the best value you will find in the Outer Banks. I had never done the whole cake tasting thing, so I requested a lot of flavor combinations (and she has some amazing ones to choose from). She dropped off the cake for tasting (which was great because we got to choose as a family, without any sales pressure), and each one was huge. Each little cake for tasting was large enough for 4 decent sized pieces. With all of the flavors to try, we had a sheet cake of different, and mouth watering wedding cakes to try (it took us a week, and a lot of outside help to finish them all). They were SO good. We went with the Red Velvet Cake with Rasberry filling, and Lemon cake with Lemon filling (although the orange and mocha were both amazing too). We had 5 of us voting during the tasting, so our difficult decision was easier to make. Her cake is so good. The lemon (which was my pick. The groom picked red velvet) was gone so fast that I didn't even get a piece at the reception. We went with cream cheese frosting (since fondent costs more and tastes worse), so it didn't look like the cake of my dreams (they're always prettier with that smooth fondent finish), but it tasted divine. That's not to say that it was unattractive; We went with a nature theme, and Christine's cake was ivory with lovely leafy ivy climbing up the three tiers and our love bird cake topper which fit perfectly, but it didn't look like the magazine cakes (all of which had the fondent icing). This is not a reflection of the bakers talents however. I chose the frosting type (and she explained the differences beforehand), and we went for flavor over looks, so I have no complaints. The Outer Banks Cake company is the absolute best baker that you will find, if you're on a budget like we were. Maybe the best overall. I didn't try any from her overpriced competitors, so I wouldn't know. I'd give her a 4 out of 5 stars for looks, and an enthusiastic 5 out of 5 stars for taste and value. We will definitely use her again during future trips to the Outer Banks.
