The Mayowood Stone Barn
The location is stunningly beautiful. The wedding however was facing the main road and during the ceremony about 4 groups of people walked by, and 3 cars drove by. It wrecked the mood to say the least! The worst part tho was the owner. She was very unprofessional. I was a guest at the wedding so I cannot comment on the business up to the wedding day. I do know that the owner provided the sound system and had clear rules about the volume and the DJ had to sign a contract on those volume rules. The DJ was given a mic with bad batteries which died during the couples first dance and completely wrecked it!! It was the loudest static noise you can imagine and lasted 10 seconds. Awful!! The owner then showed up about an hr into the reception (9:30pm) and demanded that the volume be turned down. The DJ said that he was abiding by the rules but if she wanted to turn it down to go right ahead. She turned it down so low it was like it was just back ground music. Then the DJ complained about the dead mic and the effect it had on the first dance. The owner got so infuriated that she threatened to punch the DJ in the face. The groom had to break up the arguement. Later on (10pm) the groomsmen found that all of their belongings had been taken out of their dressing area and strewn across the lawn and the room locked. I will never give the Mayowood Stone Barn a good review and will never suggest anyone use it for their wedding.
I am the DJ as described below... I have been doing this for over 15 years, I have worked with the largest DJ companies in the US, I know what I am doing.
To the owner:
The sound system contract that I had to sign in order to play at your venue states that all music levels will be set and locked, I was playing at your levels. You killed the dance! Then you had the nerve to blame your microphone dying on me? Why dont you use some brand name batteries...not the ones from the dollar store. Furthermore, how crazy are you that you would go into the rooms that someone has rented from you and throw all of their bellongings out into the grass. Were you that drunk? Personally, I wish you would of hit me! I said nothing to you, in fact I laughed at everything you said. Go ahead and give me a bad review now.
I feel bad for all the future weddings that are booked there, don't plan on having a dance, don't hire a dj.
I hope this is a light to all couples looking to book at this venue. TURN AND RUN NOW!
I am making it my personal vendetta to get this story out, just like one of the people who were there last night already did before me. You don't deserve to run this type of an establishment.
This is a beautiful venue, there is no doubt about it. Guests were blown away by it. They were very available via email whenever we needed them and they were quite responsive. They handled all the issues with fire code and music violations professionally.
I have one major complaint and for me this was a very big deal. We got married over labor day and the thing I was most concerned about was being hot. I understand that is a risk you take when you have an outdoor wedding as we wanted to get married by the oak tree. However, the Stone Barn rents air conditioners, we were assured that we could decide day of if we wanted to pay to rent those air conditioners for the barn barn. So even if it were hot outside, our guests could then go inside and be cool for the meal and dance party.
The 15-day weather forecast came out and it was predicted to be in the low 70s over labor day weekend. An email was sent out to all the couples that they would be sending the air conditioners back for the remainder of the 2012 season and we would not have the option to rent them day of unless we wanted to pay for them in advance.
I argued that we should still have the opportunity to decide day of and that a 15 day forecast is not reliable enough to base this business decision on. But they persisted. I had to pay around $200.00 then or they would send the air conditioners back.
It ended up being nearly 90 degrees and incredibly humid on my wedding day. There were no air conditioners available for us to rent. It was very uncomfortable in the barn. Everyone was drenched in sweat (you could see it soaked through most people's clothes), I couldn't stay in my dress, my hair was sweat-soaked for our first dance... I am upset at the Stone Barn for violating the verbal agreement they made with us.
I chose this venue for my son's Minnesota reception after they were married out of state a few weeks prior to their reception.
We all absolutely loved it and had a wonderful time. We had so many compliments from
our guest. The owners were available the whole night, and were so gracious. They were hands on and a delight to work with. We used one of their recommendations for our caterer (Canadian Honkers). We had an awesome dinner and I would hire them again for sure. They had wonderful service and exceeded our expectations in every way all the up to our D.J. who was attending to our beverage table while the guest were arriving. What an enchanting evening filled with lots of laughter and love! Perfect!
I was another October bride. I was not as fortunate with the weather. It was in the 50s, but that is still chilly, especially at night. I happily paid the $175 for the heat, as I contacted the same place they rented the heaters from and it would have been over $400 for me to rent the same heater, as they only rent them in two week minimums.
There were a couple of small communication issues leading up to the wedding, which can be stressful, but they worked out. They were onsite the day of decorating and rehearsal making sure everything was working, cleaning a few last minute things, putting chair pads on, etc.
Shelly (owner) actually helped me through a minor hickup with a different vendor the day before, which she did not have to do! (Our dishes arrived with food residue on them and she was right there to hook me up with hot water, a tub, dish soap and cloths!) They have a room full of random things you can rent that fit in with their theme that help if you need last minute items-make sure to ask them about the rentals!
Overall, my husband and I loved the venue and could not imagine getting married anywhere else. I was standing behind a curtain that hid the reception area as the guests when upstairs for the ceremony and could hear the comments as people walked in and it just warmed my heart as I waited to get married! We received SOOOO many compliements on the unique venue and photos turn out amazing!!!
Amazing, unique site. This place went from virtually unknown when I booked it and within less than 2 years, they're now fully booked! As of now, you rent only the space at the barn, meaning a lot of leg work to get rentals, food and all your other vendors in but the end result is well worth it! They have lots of plans for improvements including bathrooms and an elevator to the top floor. Book early!
