Reviews for Thomas Hughes Video Productions
4 stars for the finished product. The quality was pretty good, however I took off one star because the video did not come until 9 months after the wedding. Also, I specified all the songs that were used in the video which was nice. You have to be pro-active in choosing the music though, because they won't go out of their way to ask you for your selections.
Pre-wedding Customer Service breakdown:
* 1 star for setting up a consultation with me and then cancelling on me less than 24 hours before because he couldn't drive down that far. If you can't come then why did you set up the consultation?
* 1 star for the cameraman who cancelled last minute but did not bother to email/phone to apologize or explain that it was an emergency.
* 5 stars for the communication and responsiveness from the sales managers, who apologized for the cameraman
* 5 stars for Anita Hughes
* 5 stars for the salespeople for honoring the march promotion (free edited 10-12 minute video) when I had booked in February. The February promotion was kind of crappy (two extra copies of DVDs) and we asked for the march instead and they sent us an updated contract right away.
Interesting things to note:
I watched 4 demos, and two were absolutely amazing while one was downright horrible. Thomas Hughes is a group of videographers while I prefer to know *who* I'm getting when I pay $$$ for someone. The demo quality is hit and miss.
Thomas Hughes seems to be a pretty safe choice as your videographer. They have many videographers and it seems like it's run like a normal company with many people in charge of different areas (cameramen, sales, editing, etc.) as opposed to your typical 1 or 2 person operation. The sales people are responsive and we got many demos to watch. They were flexible on the terms. We met our videographer Nick in person and I thought he was a nice, honest guy who would do a good job.
UPDATE:
We haven't gotten our video yet, but I just wanted to write my impression of them during the wedding. We had 2 videographers for both the ceremony and reception. They were not invasive and I only noticed them a couple times here and there. They were on time and warned us before they were going to leave. Obviously, the final video is the important part, but I'm happy with their professionalism during the wedding.
In less than a month after my wedding, THV produced a very good quality video of my wedding. The highlight video was good but some of the effects were a bit cheesy. I much preferred the full length and the montage at the end was the best. Their turnaround was great and Darren, our videographer was fantastic. We never knew he was there and he was polite, on time and very professional.
THV is a good standard video shop good for the budget bride. I wish we would have hired Justin Fone or Weddings on Film but by the time I came aware of them, the deposit was already out.
I also take a star off for customer service. They are very nice but they had a mix up with charging us and still have yet to recify the situation. We have had several calls into them and they can't seem to figure out what the deal is.
Lastly, I recommend NOT having them stream and host your video online. First, they charge an obscene amount (we thought we were getting the full length and the highlight. No, no, just the highlight) and they only host for 6 months. 450$ for 6 months and a 10 minute video? No thank you. Not to mention, downloading times are awful so much so we are battling to get our money back. No one could even access it!
In any case, if you are looking for someone to straight shoot your wedding, no real cinematography or film editing, this is your place.
The output was good, solid. Nothing awe-inspiring.
I will hold off before giving my final review, but let me just say that it has been almost 5 months and they still have not delivered my wedding video. In addition, when I signed on with them they did not tell me that there was an additional 25% fee to get your video within 2 weeks of your wedding. It was not until the week before, when they were demanding final payment, that they informed me that regular processing is 4 months. I felt like this was being very sneaky.
I went with Nick, Margaret's recommendation, who was very professional. Waiting to see the final product.
FINAL REVIEW:
I am very disappointed with the final product. The highlight video was definitely not as good with all the transitions as in the samples that I saw. I feel like their samples are really good and they reel you in with that. The full length video was ok. In hindsight, I would have rather had Weddings on Film or Justin Fone as my videographer. It may have cost a little more, but well worth it.
We received our video a few weeks ago and it is beautiful! I have watched it a few times now. I highly reccomend getting the highlight video, that's really the only thing that people will sit through.
The only negative thing that I can say about Thomas Hughes is that their communication was very poor during the weeks that we were supposed to get the video. They gave mis-information, never apologized or followed up after I complained. It left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.
I got my video last week and it is beautiful! All family who have seen it think it is fabulous. Def. get the highlight as many won't want to watch the whole hour long version. Love the music they chose. Great customer service.
I hired Thomas Hughes for my wedding and had Glenn as my videographer and he was assisted by Jared. They were very nice and I think they did a great job at the wedding. When I did get my video back I was a little dissapointed. I was expecting it to look more like one of their demos on the website, but it was just okay. They didn't have too many special effects except for like black and white and they didn't do any transisions from one clip to another, it kinda just cut off to the next part.
Pretty solid studio. Didn't inspire me unfortunately. But for someone on a tight budget, can be a great opportunity for a professional, affordable videographer.
Working with Thomas Hughes has been very easy. I never bothered to go in to the studio to interview and hire them. Just by watching their demo videos they seemed great.
So far everything has been very good. Wedding was just yesterday so video review is pending....
UPDATE - Upon receiving the video, it definitely didn't live up to the demo's that I viewed. The lighting was off in the ballroom and I know that they've been to my venue a lot of times as they are a preferred vendor for Ralston so I think they should have had that mastered.
I feel as though they sent a newbie to shoot our wedding. During my husbands speech to his father, the camera man panned to an uncle who was obviously not DH father (ie..not wearing a tux and not introduced as father of groom)...it was odd, the cameraman also missed DH entrance in the ceremony. I ended up paying for an extra hour to have them stay to film an hour of the dance/party/reception and he left without capturing any of that. You could tell that the camera died a few times (ie, parts of the speech was missing - i bought the raw footage..so I know they didn't just cut parts out) and that some of the footage was shaky.
Overall, I think their demo's are great and like mentioned in another review, they reel you in with those. And I think those must have been shot with more than one camera or a more experienced person.
If you do go with Thomas Hughes, make sure you have in writing (on your contract) what you want taped because what I discussed over the phone was not on my video.
Also when I booked, I was told that I could pay the balance after the wedding. Two weeks prior to the wedding, I got a bill - balance must be paid in full. When I spoke w/ the customer service they said, "Oh well, I'm not sure who told you that, but we've had a lot of staffing changes, thats not our policy (now) and that we need the balance paid in full before the wedding".
On positive notes - I'm glad I got a video - even though some features were not captured and the lighting was funky - it will be great to look at in years to come and the music selection was good.
Definitely hire a videographer (whomever you choose).
I decided at the last minute to hire a videographer. I had done some initial research and decided that we just couldn't afford one, but after hearing one too many times that you just have to have one, we bit the bullet. Thomas hughes is pretty well known and established and they still had someone available (Benjamin) for my wedding date. Benjamin was great guy. Very polite, quite, professional and unassuming. I can honestly say I forget he was there! Which is a good thing :) He silently went along and did his documentation. It took around 6-7months to get the video back. I watched the highlight video first (12min long) and wasn't that impressed, but then again it was free. It just didn't have the same editing quality as the demos on their site or that they send you. But I did like the full length video (40min) much, much better.
Excellent videographer with many years of experience. Personal friend who has seen him work for clients as well as friends' weddings. Creativity and professionalism that's hard to find anywhere else. Many different options and features including a same day video to show at the reception that sets him apart. He will make sure you get everything you're looking for in a videographer and more. Every video he does is unique in its own way. They are seamless and beautiful with a great complement of footage, music, and effects. Got our video last week, and it is beautiful!
Over many, many years we have had the pleasure of working with Thomas and his amazing cast of talent. You will find them all to be very knowledgeable and experienced. As another vendor they are always a pleasure to work with and as a client we can say their product is "second to none!"
good value
If you are looking for someone to document your day Thomas Hughes Video is a dream to work with! His team of videographers are fabulous to work with and having a video to document your day is priceless!
I've used Thomas Hughes Video Productions for my many of my clients weddings. I always say that you have to capture the vows and the toasts because as a bride, you won't always remember what was said. They are truly a pleasure to work with, the best.
