Weddings are expensive!  If your budget is becoming a nightmare, there are a few ways to trim the costs without sacrificing your dreams or the comfort of your guests.

The Cake

Wedding cakes can be a ridiculous expense, especially for large guest lists or if you have your heart set on an extravagant design.  Renting a display cake is a popular option that could cut at least a couple hundred dollars from your budget without foregoing the perfect cake.  Other couples save by ordering a small cake with an elegant design, as well as a less costly sheet cake for serving.

The Dress

Your wedding gown is often the easiest place to overspend - but also one of the easiest areas to trim costs.  Take the time to shop around. Bridal discount stores, eBay, and similar locations will sometimes have your dream dress available for a fraction of the retail price!

The Menu

Food usually consumes the biggest portion of your budget.  Consider finger foods or desserts instead of a sit-down meal.  Backyard barbecues are a great way to save if you want to feed your guests a full menu.

Plants

Greenery is much less expensive than blooms.  Decorate with ferns and foliage and save the colorful blossoms for your bouquet.

Invitations

There are several ways to cut the costs of your invitations.  Besides shopping around for the best price, opt for RSVP postcards to eliminate an extra envelope as well as postage.  You can also consider eliminating the liner and avoiding enclosure cards.

The Date

Wedding venues and vendors tend to cost the most on Saturday evenings and holidays.  Hold your event in the afternoon, on Friday night, or on a Sunday afternoon.  Try to avoid major holidays if you want to trim your budget.

The Location

Search around for free venues for your ceremony and reception.  Outdoor events are often free and you'll save on plants and flowers as well!

Favors

Especially if your guest list is large, wedding favors can add up quickly.  Look for DIY favors that can be assembled quickly and inexpensively without losing sentiment or consider making a charitable donation in honor of your guests.

Music

Hiring a DJ or band for your reception can cost several hundred dollars.  Many brides load up their iPod and rent speakers instead, usually trimming their budget by $200 to $300.

Local Resources

Friends, coworkers, and family members often have a wealth of hidden talents - or may have friends that do!  If your cousin takes amazing photos and has a professional camera, would she give you a great deal on your photography?  Enlist the help of your bridesmaids to do your makeup and hair or ask a coworker to manage the videography.  New businesses are also ideal places to turn to for discounts that can cut your wedding budget.

I'm not sure why, but actually having mine on the saturday of a holiday weekend saved me more money then the saturday the week before and week after!

My DJ is only $695, and he is AMAZING! I was very skeptical at first with the price being so low. But he really knows what he's doing, he's funny- which helps with the emceeing. I will always suggest Ryan with Perfect Memory.

I've been planning my wedding for a very long time...I dont think I'll be skimping on anything, I've found a way to get what I want without going too crazy!

Things we Did Not skimp on:

The Dress: fell for the first one I saw and spent about 1,300 after alterations. After watching say yes to the dress and seeing what they spend I didn't feel to horrible about it. lol

The DJ: $1,150, but he is really amazing with great reviews and I feel entertainment should be a priority in my opinion. He also comes with Up Lighting and a Photo Booth. so the pictures that people get at no charge from the photo booth will also act as a favor.

Things we Did skimp on:

Invitations: I got an invitation kit from target, and decorated it. turned out really nice. $30 for 50 invitations. which is all we needed.

Party Favors: got bubbles from the dollar tree decorated them with ribbon. $9 for 70 bubbles. Got candy, tulle, and ribbon, to put together. may end up being .50 cents a person. also as I mentioned before guests get to keep the photos they get from the photo booth. no extra charge to me.

Cake: Making my own three layer decorative cake. The bottom layer will be real cake the the two top layers will be styrofoam dummy cakes. The kitchen will have sheet cake or maybe even cup cakes in the back to serve guests. not sure quite yet. I'm familiar with basic cake decorating, and for the amount of money bakers wanted to charge me for what I consider basic cake decorating. I decided to do it myself. I have made a couple of cakes already for practice purposes and I am ready. What would have cost me $400 is only costing me $60. including my practice cakes.

Wedding Day: We are getting married on a Thursday at a beautiful venue, July 19th. Friday is becoming such a popular day that it really did'nt save any money. And we felt Sunday the day before the start of the work week would be cruel, for the people that have regular Mondaythrough Friday jobs. Thursday was perfect for us and our budget, if someone did have to work the next day, it would just be one day of suffering before the weekend, maybe they could even take that Friday off and make it a long weekend.  We are inviting close friends and family, about 70 people. Allot of our friends just like us work in retail so Thursday is actually easier to take off in some cases then say the traditional Saturday.
