A Kitschy, Eco-Friendly Table Setting

If you like things bold and out of the box, this table setting might be just your style. (expert advice)

We saved colorful cans and planted them with vegetables (lettuce starts shown) for a look that is colorful but also eco-friendly!

We started with a rustic farm table, which event companies often rent out. We used vintage tea towels (found at thrift stores for under $1 each) as napkins and plain white plates, simple glasses, as well as mix and match vintage silverware. We used a variety of colorful cans but made sure to repeat a few of the labels, so the look wouldn't get too chaotic. The playful mix of pattern and bright color will let your guests know that you like to have fun, have a passion for good food and gardens, value the environment but that you don't take yourselves too seriously.

To plant up empty cans, drill small holes in the bottom. Cover the bottom inside of the can with pea gravel. fill with soil and plant seeds or seedlings. If you plant seeds, follow the instructions on the seed packets, it could take up to 6 weeks for the seeds to sprout. We planted seedlings about 3 inches deep in the can. The leafy greens look playful peeking out.

On the plates, we potted up small cans and added seed labels with each guest's name. If you have out of town guests, consider sending them home with seed packets instead. We also put a large seed marker in one of the centerpieces to mark the table number.

This table has a positive environmental impact as well. The napkins, cans and silverware are recycled, and instead of throwing out cut flowers, the vegetables can be replanted. You and your guests will reap veggies all year long!
