Your reception music plays a big role in your wedding.  Not only will the songs you choose set the mood and complement your overall theme, some will be responsible for creating emotional moments and cherished memories for both you and your guests.

The Big Band Wedding

If you're dreaming of a vintage wedding, a big band event is perfect.  Whether you're going all out with full-length gloves and pin-stripes for the bridal party or just prefer the mellow, jazzy sounds of the ‘30s and ‘40s, there are a ton of big band wedding songs that will be perfect for your reception.

Authentic Big Band Sounds or DJ

You have a few options for your reception music - you can hire a band, hire a DJ, or just use your iPod to play your selected tunes.  Big band weddings often feature live music for an authentic vintage atmosphere but bands can be much more stressful on your budget.  If you opt for a DJ, be sure to check their repertoire to ensure a good selection of music from the big band era.

The Songs

It doesn't matter if you're hiring a band or a DJ, there will be certain songs during your reception that should be chosen by you and your fiancé.  You can either provide a play list for the rest of the music or allow the band or DJ to choose the songs they think would work best.  Here are a few of the top big band songs for weddings:

  • First dance. The Way You Look Tonight by Frank Sinatra; It Had to be You by Harry Connick Jr.; Over the Rainbow by Judy Garland
  • Father/daughter dance. Unforgettable by Nat King Cole; I Get a Kick Out of You by Frank Sinatra; I Wish You Love by Natalie Cole
  • Cake cutting song. Love & Marriage by Frank Sinatra; Moonlight Serenade by Glenn Miller

There are plenty of other big band wedding songs that will bring a smile to the faces of your guests, from the upbeat swing sounds of more modern groups like Brian Setzer to the famous orchestra sounds of Lawrence Welk.  Don't forget to squeeze in a few dance lessons if you're planning a big band wedding reception - swing and ballroom dancing are the most popular in this era!

The song my Dad and I are dancing to is "You'll never know" Its  1940's song that has had a few people sing it from Frank Sinatra to Michel Buble.  It has a special meaning since it was my Grandparents (his parents) wedding song.  It will be nice since my Grandfather cant make the wedding and my Grandmother passed away a few years ago.
