Wedding Checklist: Muslim Wedding
One Year/ASAP:
- Consult your local mosque about optimal dates (lunar calendar) for your event. Muslims favor weddings in the month of Shawwal and avoid the sacred months of Muharram and Ramadan. Sunday is also typically favored.
- Choose a location and officiant. Any Muslim who understands Islamic tradition can officiate. If you choose to marry in a mosque, a marriage officer is likely available at the location.
- If your mate isn't Muslim, consult your mosque about inter-marriage or possible conversion.
- If this is your second marriage, inquire about remarriage requirements.
9-11 Months Before:
- Plan ceremony. Decide if you want to observe gender segregation rules.
- Make arrangements for all pre-wedding ceremonies held in a mosque.
- If marrying at a mosque, find out about dress requirements.
- Order traditional wedding outfits for the various ceremonies.
- Book vendors, including henna artist.
- Decide if you want the menu to be halal.
6-8 Months Before:
- Meet with officiant about marriage documents. Draw up the meher, determining the monetary amount the groom will give his new bride.
3-4 Months Before:
- Decide who will be a part of your ceremony. You will need two male witnesses to sign the marriage contract.
- Plan pre-wedding ceremonies (henna parties, turmeric ceremonies, and ritual baths).
2 Months Before:
- Make sure you have all necessary items for your ceremony.
1-2 Weeks Before:
- Enjoy pre-wedding celebrations.
