One of the most important parts of your wedding is planning your wedding floral scheme. Flowers are a must at a wedding and deciding what yours will be should be a fun event! If you’re not quite sure which flowers you want, here are a couple of things you should consider.

What are Your Wedding Colors?

If you’ve chosen your wedding colors, choosing flowers will be much simpler. Ideally, you want flowers that contrast or blend really well with your wedding colors. Just remember that too much contrast can look tacky – looking at a color wheel can help you see which colors look great together.

For a wedding with the color palette purple, any sort of purple flowers would look lovely. Think Lavender, Hyacinths or Orchids! You could also choose colors that contrast well with purple – such as ivory, pale pink or buttery yellow. By considering your wedding colors, you can make your wedding floral scheme absolutely stunning.

What Time of Year Is It?

By thinking about the time of year you will be marrying, you can plan your wedding floral scheme and save money. Choose flowers that are in season and available locally so your florist doesn’t have to order out for them.

Summer may bring you bouquets of Carnations, Iris, Hydrangeas, Lisianthus or other beautiful blossoms – while winter may call for Camellia, Honeysuckle, Amaryllis, Orchids, Tulips and more! If you’re not quite sure which flowers are in season, simply ask your florist to show you. Chances are you can find some great seasonal flowers for your wedding floral scheme.

The Meaning of Your Wedding Floral Scheme

Another thing to consider is what you want your wedding floral scheme to say. Most flowers have symbolic meanings that a bride-to-be may or may not want to pay attention to. For instance, most people know that red roses mean ‘love’ and yellow roses mean ‘friendship.’ However, there are a plethora of other flowers you can choose for your wedding floral scheme with just as many meanings! Here are a few examples:

  • White Carnations – Pure, Sweet and Innocent Love
  • Forget-Me-Nots – Faithful Love and Memories
  • Iris – Faith and Wisdom
  • Calla Lilies – Majestic and Charming Beauty

With all the different flowers and meanings, you can use your wedding floral scheme to say anything you want! Find something that expresses the way you and your soon-to-be groom feel about each other or something that reminds you of the day you first met. When choosing your wedding floral scheme, the possibilities are endless.

Nothing is a must for a wedding - apart from a bride and groom, lol.

I'm sure that is not how the article was intended. I think flowers are one of the loveliest things in the world, for me - they are non negotiable :) Love the article :)

Lizza, you could always do potted plants if you really wanted that floral or green element...Then they live on for a long time! I'm growing flowers in my garden this year to use at my wedding!

oh seriously.... ripping plants out of the earth?!?! unbelievable. Flowers grow, they bloom, and then they die.... why not let everyone enjoy their beauty while they can?? It's not being horrible to have beautiful flowers at your wedding. they add an amazing element. and if you don't want them, then don't have them. but maybe you should try to relax a bit.

Aww Lizza, your comment made me heart squeeze! I agree with you- they aren't a MUST! If you don't want them, don't have them. I think your candel idea sounds charming, and I commend you for trying to be green!
