Registry – Returning Unwanted Gifts
To keep or not to keep a random present? We've got the answers! (expert advice)
Gift registries are a wonderful convenience for you and your guests. They cut down tremendously on the time you'll spend returning unwanted gifts and will also decrease the number of duplicates you receive. Most guests appreciate registries because they can take a look at the items you prefer without ever leaving home. They can shop online or visit their local store and can easily see what's already been purchased and what you and your groom-to-be still need.
Not Everyone Will Shop From Your Registry
Some guests may not have Internet access; others may not have a nearby location for the stores you've chosen; some may browse your registry for gift ideas, but actually buy the item somewhere else. Whatever the reason, you'll receive duplicate gifts and there will be a few things you just don't want or need.
To Keep or Not To Keep
Yes, Grandma Martha will probably expect to see the crystal kitty cat candlesticks she gave you before the wedding proudly displayed in your new home the next time she visits - but will your cousin from France know that the retro orange couch cover she sent just didn't match your décor like the blue one you registered?
Before returning anything, consider the sentimental value of the gift and make a place for those things you should keep. Always send a thank you note for every gift you receive and never let a guest know that you didn't like their selection. Asking for receipts is rather tasteless, so there may be a few things you can't return.
Tips for Returning Gifts
Most stores have strict return policies and usually require a receipt. You may have received gift receipts with some items and should have no trouble exchanging these for something else. Monetary refunds are usually not given without the original receipt.
Gifts purchased from your registry are generally easy to exchange as well. Check the return policies on the store's website for details and instructions.
If there's no type of receipt included but you know where the gift was purchased, visit the store shortly after returning from your honeymoon and try exchanging it - some companies are lenient if you just want to get something different.
Take care of returns and exchanges as early as possible. Most stores limit the timeframe for returns, generally between 30 and 90 days after the event date. If you're still left with unwanted gifts that you can't return, consider donating them to a local charity so someone still benefits from your guest's thoughtfulness.
