What’s on Your ‘Do Not Play’ List?

For every song we want to hear at our wedding there's one we don't. Here's how to compile a "do not play" list. (expert advice)

What’s on Your ‘Do Not Play’ List? article photo

You’ve spent lots of time choosing the right music for your wedding and reception. After all that planning, the last thing you want to hear is a song you hate. Create a ‘do not play’ list for your band or DJ and you’ll never have to regret your reception music later.

What is a ‘Do Not Play’ List?

Like the name implies, your ‘do not play’ list is a collection of the songs or types of music that you would rather not hear during your reception. Your DJ may request a ‘do not play’ list before the wedding; if not, just include it along with your traditional dance selections and the DJ will honor it.

How to Create Your List

My normal wedding planning advice applies to your ‘do not play’ list as well – it’s your day so it’s what you want! Your list may include specific songs or entire types of music; the most commonly included do not play requests are usually:

·        Hard to dance to;

·        Outdated;

·        Overplayed;

·        Or carry the wrong message.

Some brides prefer to leave line dances and cliché party songs out of the line-up, others may ask the DJ not to play any house or club tunes. Your ‘do not play’ list can include songs you hate, songs that may make your guests feel uncomfortable, or songs that make you cry – whatever tune that would make you cringe if you heard it at your reception!

Some DJs have created their own ‘do not play’ list for weddings, based on the preferences of other brides. There are also a few that allow you to create your play list and do not play list online, choosing from a selection of available tracks. It’s best to ask your DJ about these options early so that you’ll have plenty of time to get your list together.

Top 10 ‘Do Not Play’ Wedding Songs

  1. The Macarena – along with all those other cheesy organized dance songs (Electric Slide, Chicken Dance, YMCA, Hokey Pokey, etc.).

  2. Celebration

  3. White Wedding

  4. Lips of an Angel by Hinder – and other cheating, breakup, or death-related songs, including Jesse’s Girl, Tears in Heaven, and I Will Survive.

  5. The Humpty Dance

  6. Love Shack

  7. Brick House

  8. Who Let the Dogs Out

  9. Hot, Hot, Hot

  10. Tainted Love – or any ‘bad’ love song.

The music will have a big influence on the mood of your reception, as well as your guests’ memories of your special day. Get started on your ‘do not play’ list now so nothing is overlooked!

I LOVE this article!  Being 50 and 63, we have a lot on our "Do Not Play List".  Our list more resembles the soundtrack from "Big Chill", that's why I always call our DW "Big Chill Meets Wild Hogs Wedding Weekend." My FI used to dance on American Bandstand, so we have a lot of oldies and Motown for him, and for me, danceable classic rock(heavy on the Stones, Dead, Doors), some classic punk and yes, even some disco(for those of my friends who have seen "Saturday Night Fever" a milliion times).

We actually have a play list.  We have songs we would like played during cocktail and dinner hours:  songs by bands we have seen in concert.  We have been together 9 years, that is a lot of bands.  We snuck them in before some of them expire.

Our Do Not Play List

1.  All songs by Bruce Springstein; Rod Stewart; and Lady Gaga(Hell, I don't even know what she looks like.)

2.  YMCA , Hokey Pokey, Mexican Hat Dance, Any Polka or Tarantella(We both danced a Tarantella at our first weddings.)

3.  Celebrate, We are Family; I Will Survive; So Many Men So Little TIme; It's Raining Men; Sweet Caroline(This song sucks.- sang to the tune of the song.)Brown Eyed Girl; Paradise by the Dashboard Lights; Titanic Song; Old Time Rock and Roll; Who Let The Dogs Out; Red Red Wine

5.  Rap, Hip Hop, Country, Blue Grass, Gospel, Opera

Thanks for a good chuckle and a well written article!

Ha ha ha I would be a horrible wedding DJ as "Humpty Dance" as well as "Tainted Love" are must-haves for us.

I think that it all depends on the couple, too.  Most of FIs friends as well as mine were of the artsy/mildly goth-y/band/chorus/drama/geek persuasion in high school, and "Tainted Love" was always a necessary sing-along for any large occassion.

We are TOTALLY playing Love Shack at our wedding.  It might be the walk-in song.  FI LOVES the B-52s (and so do I).  It is only our MUST PLAY LIST.  (I am doing the iPod DJ and making my own playlist, so every song is a must play!)
