Move over 4-slice toaster and 10-speed blender – requests for housewares, linens, and kitchen gadgets may still top wedding registries, but the wave of gift giving has changed over the years. It is no longer uncommon to see big ticket wedding items added to registries. From home stereo equipment to luxury cars, you'd be surprised what you'll encounter. However, some big ticket wedding items are simply more practical than others, such as:

1) Flat Screen TV

With a clear picture, movie theater quality sound, and fantastic images – flat screen televisions are becoming increasingly popular in the world of big ticket wedding items. Newlyweds usually need an upgraded TV for their new home together, and flat screen selections are 'in.' Some people are hesitant to add a large television to their wedding registry, as a plasma television (up to 42 inches) on the lower end generally runs between $800 and $1,500, but you never know when Grandma wants to make you smile – so it's OK to insert a few big ticket wedding items here and there.

2) Blue-Ray DVD Player

Blue ray is the future for watching and recording DVDs, so it is only natural to want to stay in line with the times. Before you know it, your old DVD player will become obsolete and you'll be glad you put a Blue Ray device on your list of big ticket wedding items.

3) Camcorders and Digital Cameras

How else will the newlyweds capture the perfect images of their honeymoon if they don’t have a camcorder or digital camera? It is not uncommon to encounter these big ticket wedding items when shopping for a bride and groom. The base price for a decent camcorder or digital camera with all the bells and whistles usually starts around $300. Choose a Sony handycam with a USB cord for a quick upload of data online and transfer of footage to a computer. This may run a loved one close to $500 to fulfill this big ticket wedding item. From high resolution to red eye eliminating features, create a varied list of camcorders and digital cameras to make it easier for a guest to choose an accommodating selection.

4) Matching Diamond Watches and Other Expensive Jewelry

Depending on the expensive tastes of the bride and groom, big ticket wedding items like matching diamond watches or his or her Rolexes can grace a bridal registry. Jewelry is a common addition to a wedding registry. Jewels may even appear in requests, such as diamond-encrusted cigar cases and jeweled Faberge eggs.

5) Nintendo Wii and Other Gaming Systems

The modern bride and groom may forego the dainty china patterns and request the ultimate choice in at-home entertainment – the Nintendo Wii and other gaming systems that bring Guitar Hero, World of Warcraft, and Wii Fit to life. In this day and age, you will find the latest gaming systems, controllers, and their games costing an arm and a leg. This is why this big ticket wedding item shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Increase Your Chances for Receiving Big Ticket Wedding Items...

To increase your chances of receiving big ticket wedding items, don’t limit yourself to one store and instead register at multiple retailers. A couple of popular choices include Tiffany & Co., Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn, Bloomingdale's, Macy's, Crate and Barrel, Neiman Marcus, JCPenney, and Barneys New York. For the electronics fanatic, direct guests to Amazon.com. Gift cards from stores like Best Buy and Apple can also bring you closer to obtaining big ticket wedding items.

Then again, I've also heard of some people saying you should register for beds, cars, fancy bbq grills, honeymoons, and the list goes on, instead of regular household items that make up most registry lists from Bed Bath and Beyond. Pretty much anything under the sun that you can't or wouldn't pay for yourself. If anything, it makes you look greedy.

We registered for games for our Wii, a Flip camera and a trampoline.  But we also registered mostly for household items.  The reason we registered for some non-traditional items was because we get a discount if they are on our registry and nobody else purchases them.  We joked about putting a TV on our registry but I would never do it.  I would never expect someone to get a TV for us.

And here I was hoping some people might be generous enough to buy a place-setting or two.. o_O  I can't imagine somebody buying us a giant TV.

Wow. I would never dream of asking for any of those things.
